The Crucible: Tragic Hero

Decent Essays

Crucible Essay A tragic hero is a character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction. Many characters in The Crucible have personal flaws that lead to tragedy. In the play there are two characters, John Proctor and Reverend Hale. We are going to talk about which one is more of a tragic hero than the other. They both have big roles in the play, but they start fighting for different things in the beginning.
I think Reverend Hale is the tragic hero in this story. I say this because Reverend starts off on the courts side. I am saying this because Hale starts off on the courts side thinking they are right and he thinks he can help Salem get back to the way it was. Once Hale realizes that they are wrong, he starts to help John. Then John and Reverend started figuring out ways to get the people out of jail, by lying to Danforth and say they have done Witchcraft. Then Reverend realizes that people don’t want to lie about witchcraft, and he figures out that he can’t change people.
This is why I think Reverend Hale is the tragic hero in this play. He doesn’t get what he wants, which is saving the town. John Proctor gets what he wants, so he isn’t the tragic hero, but Hale doesn’t and loses everything. The big contributor that stops Hale from getting what he wants was Abigail, she starts putting random people on trial. Hale is the tragic hero and my few paragraphs are written to prove
