The Crusades The crusades were a dark time for humanity. This period of time was before the enlightenment, before real established governments, this was a time of kings and popes and chaos. The one established voice in the world was the church and they knew it. This monopoly of the information and influence was being threated by the Muslims and made them fear loosing their control and this fear led to the crusades. The crusades were multiple attempts by the Christians of Europe to clam the holy land. With the most important being the land of Jerusalem. This bloody struggle continued for roughly two centuries completely altering the region and its views. The first crusades were in 1095 and were ignited by Pope Urban II. The year 1095 B.C. was the hit of the Christian churches influence on the people. The church was corrupt and wanted more power and influence. The churches major appeal was to sinners throw the promise that their sins would be forgiven if you went on the crusade. Not only were all of your sins forgiven but also there was a chance you could get fame and fortune from going on crusade. This lure of treasure and salvation snared tens of thousands of people to go on “pilgrimage”. The crusades were fundamentally different then any war in the past. Regular wars were fought over land, resources, or even just a grudge. The crusades were fought for an idea of religious salvation and symbolic religious paces.
