Good morning/ good afternoon teachers and fellow students. Today I will be talking about how Mark Haddon, the author of my prescribed text ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’, highlights the theme of truth through the characters within the book. Christopher Boone, the main protagonist and his Father Ed Boone are the most significant characters when showing the role of truth. Christopher is 15 year old boy who was diagnosed with Aspergers. His whole life is based around distinguishing whether things are a lie or the truth, to help understand the world around him. Christopher is unable to comprehend lies. He believes that everything that isn't true is classed as a lie, just like a metaphor. Christopher doesn't like metaphors as he can not compare them to anything. He thrives on using similes as it helps him grasp a concept and states “I think that it (a metaphor) should be called a lie because a pig is not like a day and people do not have skeleton in their cupboards” This quote really displays the frustration Christopher shows when something isn't the truth as he doesn't have the ability to fully understand simple techniques like a metaphor. Christopher…?”.This quote uses a paradox as Ed asks Christopher to trust him even though he betrayed Christopher’s trust by not telling him the truth.This quote from Ed expresses the regret and desperation he has towards lying to Chris.
