From the start of reading “Shitty first drafts” I have concluded that even the best writers, write horrible drafts first. In the passage it even says when you start off with a shitty first draft, this is how they end up with good second grafts, and terrific third drafts. This shows that a lot of effort goes into writing an essay. You have to start from somewhere, put what comes to your mind immediately on paper. It suprises me that even professional writers struggle with writing rough drafts. The author talks about when you write a rough draft, you have to take bits and pieces of the essay out.

In the chapter, they talk about learning how to state your own opinion without sounding biased. I believe that one great example of this is when the author exclaims, “I have a problem with what liberals call cultural differences.” This type of writing is important because you can express your own views and opinions without sounding biased. This type of writing only works if you can integrate parts of their argument into your own. Another method discussed in this text was using references to things you said prior to that. Dorothy Allison's “I'm Working on My Charm” is a story of a young sixteen-year-old girl who works as a waitress with her mother. As a young daughter coming to the same field as the mother, the mother becomes a role model here and supports and helps her daughter on becoming a good waitress. She makes sure the environment her daughter is working on is good and that she is aware of the Yankees. Yankees doesn't see waitresses on the same level as they are. So, the mother is worried how her daughter will deal with Yankees and makes sure she knows how to handle different situations. The daughter is taught to use her charm to influence people. Also, Mabel, her mother's friend, teaches her how to bet on tips from customer. This story illustrates how an older person can be a guide for younger ones to be successful and accepted in the society.

In July 2009, at a TED conference, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian author, gave a stunning speech about “the Danger of a Single Story”. In her speech, she mentioned about negative consequences happening when people tend to form stereotypes based on a single story, the one-sided argument. The single story blindfolds our eyes and prevents us from seeing the complexity, diversity, and similarities that construct our world, just as Adichie says “these negative stories is to flatten my experience and overlook the many other stories that formed me” (12:56). Listening to all her own personal experience and argument, I have become fully convinced and also see myself reflected in her stories. The single story can cause underlying and harmful impacts not only on personal issues but also on the global scale.

This book taught me just how important it is to pay attention to those around you and not just contribute to the bystander effect. In many cases throughout this story it was obvious that the there were some terrible issues going on within this family that still some how seemed to go unnoticed. Both parents being alcoholics, their son going to school with bruises and injuries daily, having to steal food from classmates and having to wear the same dirty clothes all year round. This documentary caught my attention right from the opening lines. People, in general, do not like to admit when they are wrong, so when the narrator began by claiming that the entire set of beliefs he had grown up with and lived his life by were wrong and “untrue” it made me stop and consider how that would affect a person. To have your entire way of thinking be proven invalid would be an unsettling situation to put it simply. I could not begin to imagine how that would feel, but I tried to keep this thought in mind as I continued with the rest of the documentary as it explored complex ideas involving education, employment, and obedience.

The author writes that their attention is typically divided amongst four different areas including the story itself, the audience being told, themselves, and a linking portion referred to as judgment. The last part is what can be inferred from other components together. Often these remain unconscious and lack any investigation as to whether or not one thing is weighing too heavily, easily distracting you for instance. Attention and where it is directed to should remain flexible and can vary from performance to performance depending on different variables. The environment is also a constraint that should be noted. The idea of chunking attention to many directions is a technique that might prove valid later on when preparing for a speech, and not only at the moment of presentation.
