Society has indoctrinated men and women to believe that in order to be considered “beautiful” you must look like the images on television, billboards, and magazines.
C. Credibility: Since one of my friends has undergone cosmetic surgery, and I have heard numerous of stories about cosmetic surgery I feel prepared to speak about the issue.
D. Propositional Statement: Cosmetic Surgery remains a problem in society because it carries a degree of risk such as psychological illness and severe side effects. I propose that people should take a more naturalistic approach and not consider cosmetic surgery.

A. The first part of the problem is that people who undergo cosmetic surgeries are at higher risk for suffering with psychological

These procedures include face lifts, rhinoplasty, liposuction, and male breast reduction ("Male plastic surgery," 2013). Men also suffer with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Some of the famous examples that we are familiar with is Michael Jackson, Bruce Jenner, and Justice Jedlice.
Transition Statement: Not only is the development of psychological illnesses a major problem, but the severe side effects play a major role as well.
B. The second part of the problem is cosmetic surgeries entail risky side effects that people are unaware of.
1. Most people expect cosmetic surgeries to alter and enhance their beauty; however, these surgeries come with severe side effects such as infections, nerve damage and even death. Whenever the skin is broken and foreign objects are inserted into internal tissues one’s body becomes prone to infections (Hamel, 2014). These infections do not only require antibiotic treatment, but could also cause scarring and require additional surgery. According to NBC News, nineteen women were infected with Mycobacterium abscessus after having cosmetic surgery in 2014 (Fox, 2014). They had to acquire weeks of antibiotic treatment because the bacteria resist the effects of medicine (Fox, 2014).
2. Another potentially severe side effect of cosmetic surgery is nerve damage. If a doctor accidently damages a nerve it can cause problems with one’s muscles and partial or
Although, there might be some truth in such statements however, one can wonder if it’s worth the possible risk and complications that comes with cosmetic surgery. “There is a chance of infection, bruising or bleeding with any procedure.” said Nigel Mercer, British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Some additional risks involved in cosmetic surgery are blood clots, scarring, bleeding, hematoma, nerve damage, and even death. (Mayo Clinic.) These complications are more likely to occur among patients who undergo multiple procedures at the same time. The procedure with the highest risk Liposuction involves the highest risk because it involves removing the excess fat from the body. There is also a chance of permanent facial nerve damage, especially during facelift surgery.
Following a cosmetic procedure, patients may develop infection, disease or illnesses. Along with cosmetic surgery, complications such as: “paralysis of the face or other body parts, abnormal heart rhythm, airway obstruction, blood clots, brain damage, heart attack, malignant hyperthermia, nerve damage and stroke” are possible (Disadvantages). After surgery, patients may have to undergo a lengthy healing process. Healing takes days, months, or even forever depending on the patient (Disadvantages). Are the risks and process really worth the desired outcome?
Thesis: Plastic Surgery has been a problem in American society. People shouldn’t feel ashamed of their body, their looks, or be insecure about any body part because everyone is beautiful in their own way. Problems of plastic surgery include expenses, health issues, and medical malpractice.
Surgeries in themselves are complicated procedures. Weighing positive and negative outcomes and every in between possibility is a task every surgeon and patient must talk through. Many procedures are based off a necessary for life, or a better healthier-life outcome. Such procedures are covered by health insurance. But what about the other side of surgeries? Some procedures are purely cosmetic, some may say. But, cosmetics can play a
Every surgery has side-affects, but most people lack to find out the side-affects of cosmetic surgeries. “Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, lung disease, or obesity are at higher than average risk developing pneumonia or having a stroke, a heart attack, or blood clots in the legs or lungs after surgery” (“Cosmetic Surgery”).”Other risks include bleeding, infection, skin breakdown, or accumulation of clear fluid (seroma) or blood (hematoma) beneath the incision” (“Cosmetic Surgery”). Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgery, there are many complications that can occur with a breast augmentation, such as “breast asymmetry, chest wall deformity, or loss of natural breast tissue” (“Cosmetic Surgery”). “The most common complication of breast implant surgery is capsular contracture” (“Cosmetic Surgery”). Along with the complications of cosmetic surgery there are also physiological complications. Patients may have to high of hopes when they go into surgery, and it may not turn out the way they wanted it too. “Research reported in 2007 showed that among women studied who had undergone breast augmentation surgery, there were higher than average rates of suicide and of deaths related to alcohol and substance abuse” (“Cosmetic Surgery”). Along with side-affects, money plays
Plastic surgery has its’ good sides but it also has its’ bad sides, the risks to plastic surgery are horrible. They’re always risks when people decide to go under the knife. If something goes wrong , results could be irreversible. Most common risks are organ and nerve damages, chronic pain, scarring and infections. People also have to make sure their surgeon is good
In a society so consumed by the ideology of beauty, it makes sense as to why so many women these days undergo cosmetic surgery. The definition of beauty has long been obstructed and changed. In the past, if you look at the woman, you will see they are curvy, during this era being thin meant you were poor where as a beautiful and wealthy woman would be plump because she could afford fine dining. As society has changed, being slender has become the new trend, creating the idea that in order to be truly beautiful one must be thin. The movie stars in Hollywood, although most people realize the beautifying changes that are made to the pictures, this idea of 'beauty ' and 'desire ' still lingers in the mind of whoever comes across it. Our society is bombarded with several different ideologies of beauty but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The beauty standards that have been set should not be what are shaping people around the world and influencing them to go through with plastic surgery. The use of plastic surgery has changed from a medical procedure used to reconstruct the wounded or people with birth defects to reconstructing something people do not like about themselves. Plastic surgery was used during WWI in 1910 and after the war, skin grafting grew. The first training program in the United States was in 1924 thanks to Dr. John Davis. In 1950-1959, plastic surgery was used broadly to repair cleft pallet. It wasn’t until about
Thesis: The cosmetic, issues, and beauty. We need to understand every possible outcome while considering plastic surgery
107) Second, magazines geared toward women often run stories focusing on the ordinary woman’s experiences with surgery of the benefits of surgically improving one’s appearance. Also, advertisements typically promote the benefits of cosmetic surgery using gendered stereotypes, with men represented as concerned with virility and professional competitiveness whereas women are investing in aesthetic improvements. Therefore, the idea of personal transformations and self-improvement is not particularly novel but standard approach that has become entrenched in mass media representations of cosmetic surgery (Adams, 2009, p. 108). However, the potential health risks are downplayed and negative outcomes are attributed to the unpredictability of the aesthetic results or poor surgeon selection. More importantly, these frames tend to diverge from the actual surgical experience, which rather being neat and instantaneous, is often complex and painful. Nevertheless, it is the media-mediated frame that dominates the broader social discussion of cosmetic surgery and often reduces it to a consumable lifestyle option as opposed to a complicated medical procedure fraught with potential risks and uncertainties.
Plastic Surgery has become a worldwide epidemic in today’s world. The number of plastic surgeries continues to increase since 2010. In today’s day and age, plastic surgery is one of the most popular and requested procedures. Females are opting to have plastic surgery because they dislike their body image. Society has impacted many people by brain washing them to believe that a person’s body has to be perfect. In order for one to be considered beautiful, television and media influence people’s perceptions of beauty.
If one is considering cosmetic surgery I suggest reconsidering. Research shows cosmetic surgery can be a risky and costly procedure. Society is pressuring people to look more attractive. Media shows actors to be flawless and the public feels that one should be compared to these actors. Cosmetic surgery is becoming more popular is today’s culture. People are turning to cosmetic surgery for many reasons, some of them are not healthy.
Moreover, plastic surgery is an expensive procedure ranging up to $6,000 or more. It can put tremendous financial pressure on patient and their family. While assessing the cost of the surgery, people tend to forget the cost of the postoperative medication. And sometimes, people have to pay for a secondary surgeries because of dissatisfaction with results. Most insurance policies do not pay for elective procedures such as plastic surgery. Other disadvantage of plastic surgery is that it is time-consuming. Patients must plan time off to recuperate enough to return to work and daily activities. Lastly, dead can be caused by plastic surgery. The bigger the procedure, the higher the risk of complication should be aware of, for instance, infection, hematoma, allergic reactions and many more. Many celebrities have died from plastic surgery like Solange Magnano, Donda West. Though death caused by plastic surgery are rare, the possibility of death cannot be ruled out. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has reported that within more than 400,000 operations, which performed in accredited facilities, the death rate was 57,000 cases- extremely low. Nevertheless, we can be one of that 57,000 cases.
Plastic surgery is not the best choice for anybody because you never know what your final outcome is which Allison A. stated in 2008. Doctors cannot guarantee you will come out successfully from the surgery room. She also said that it is like a game where you do not know if you win at the end of the play. People turn to cosmetic products for better appearances but when it’s not enough or not satisfying to them, they turn to plastic surgery. They never think about the consequences of what they want to look like or the dangers and risks that are involved. Veronica S. (2007) believes that cosmetic surgery is more harmful than it is beneficial. Unnecessary surgery seems to put women in danger for the sake of Hollywood beauty. We all handle healing differently. Some may heal well and some won’t. Hykra (2005) states that if you have pre-existing health conditions cosmetic surgery can be really dangerous. He also reports that people with heart condition, diabetes, or if you are a smoker, or have allergies you may experience complications that others may not.
Wound separation possesses even more problems to a patient and can permanently scar the skin, it could potentially occur each time an incision is made. Death of tissue, known as necrosis, nerve damage affecting feeling and stimulation, serious scarring which sometimes leaves the patient feeling more self-conscious than even before the surgery and other alternative complications arise as a result of plastic surgery.
Have you ever considered having plastic surgery? After reading this paper you might want the surgery or you might not. Plastic surgery, a form of art, can reconstruct your body and renew your confidence but can you accept the risks involved?
