“As the Secretary-General of the United Nations, an organization of the 147 member states who represent almost all of the human inhabitants of the planet earth. I send greetings on behalf of the people of our planet. We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of the immense universe that surrounds us and it is with humility and hope that we take this step.”
-- Former Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, 1977
The day European stepped on African continent and began enslaving the black Africans was doomed to be one of the most disgraceful days in the history of mankind. When they were sold as tools, nobody considered them as our fellow humans. It was their poverty and backwardness that made them unable to fight against. So far as we can see, similar tragedies happened again and again throughout the history of humanity. In the final analysis, the reason is that we human beings lack a sense of sympathy towards aliens, especially when they are much weaker than us. So do extraterrestrials, who might be mush stronger than us. By rights, having a so good understanding of human history and human nature, we should know how dangerous to contact with another strange civilization, and keep us away from that danger. But we don’t. We spread to all aliens the radio in this
The quote "Character is what you are in the dark" - Dwight Lyman Moody has a few meanings. Mostly it means that you're different when you're alone. When you're around people they are influences of some sort. If you get into a situation when you're with people you might react differently than if you were alone, resulting in a different outcome. A lot of the time people aren't their true self around friends, or family, or whoever it may be for many reasons. A big reason is they don't want to be judged. Maybe they wanna look "cool" or get popular for something. Maybe they think they'll be looked at differently for being who they truly are. So basically fear of what others think keeps us from being who we really are. Fear can make us act different,

“We all have a responsibility, a universally endowed responsibility, to ensure that a history of violence is not going to be followed by a future of vengeance. The only way to properly honor the millions of lives lost is through peace, and the only way to achieve that peace is for the United Nations... and all of the countries with the capacity to step up and help show the way forward.”
The Light In The Forest, a novel by Conrad Richter, depicts the struggles of a young boy named True Son, or John Cameron Butler, who has been raised by Indians but must go back to his home with the “whites.” The story takes place in Western Ohio and Pennsylvania in the year of 1764 where the relationship between the Pennsylvanians and Indians is not great. Throughout the story, True Son learns the differences between the Indians and Whites, and how each group views the other. Knowing the views between the two groups, True Son things about trying to figure out which group he really identifies as and belongs to, which is one of the conflicts in the story. Through all the troubles that True Son encounter, the theme of the story is the true identity
People across the globe have been afraid of extraterrestrial beings for centuries. Most of these fears are brought about by the thought that any being that is more technologically advanced will inevitably want to bring destruction to all humans. Many people think this due to the history of human beings that shows those who come up with a better technology use that as power to be wielded against others. C.S. Lewis in Out of the Silent Planet shows that humans tend to fear the possible power of beings that are different and are technologically advanced. His characters show continuously the views that humans have for new or different beings. He constantly gives examples throughout the book of the ways humans look at, down at or up to, creatures of different levels of intelligence and of different appearances. The three species of “aliens” in this book give a good example of how well a society could work together if they looked at their differences as ways to help each other, rather than looking at them as a way to differ between higher and lower class. The creatures disregard appearance and intelligence and show just how little those characteristics matter in the total scheme of things.
In retrospect to our society's reliance on fake light, Paul Bogard argues that pure darkness should be captivated in the article he wrote, “Let there be dark.” He constructs his argument by using rhetorical questions, personal relationship towards darkness, and allusions facing art and history.
The goal of the United Nations, when formed was to “maintain international peace and security and commit to economic and social development. (Fomerand, Jacques)” As one
Depression has presented itself in society well before the scientists of today were able to begin research and truly try to understand this disease. Depression in its earliest form was known as “melancholia”. The earliest accounts of melancholia appeared in ancient Mesopotamian texts in the second millennium B.C. ("Mental Help Historical Understandings of Depression Comments", 2007). Mental illness back during these times were thought to be of demonic possessions and/or punishments from the almighty God. Society at this time did not believe that there was a problem that was taking place in the brain and changing the behaviors of individuals affected by the diagnosis. Darkness Visible by William Styron is vulnerable account of his own stretch
Personally, the work to promote human rights affects my life because we live in a world where there is extreme inequality and maltreatment of people that differ from the “norm.” There are several different aspects involved in human rights work and issues that are addressed and allows for me to have a better life and to be respected in society. Being a woman and an African-American, the work for to promote human rights opens the doors for me to have more opportunities to accomplish my goal in life. Work to promote human rights strives for the end of discrimination against African-Americans, including the lack of economic, health, and housing benefits. At the core of this movement is the idea that everyone has the right to live freely with
What would you do if extraterrestrial life came to Earth, running for their lives and trying to get home? This is a question posed in many Science fiction films, books, and texts. In particular, the novel I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore and the 2009 film Race to Witch Mountain by Andy Fickman. These two texts show contrasting outcomes of what humankind’s response to the unknown may be. The creators of these two texts display the influence of stereotypes, fears which humankind holds, and human likeness to speculate the possible outcomes of human interaction with extraterrestrial life.
"Obama would be no faceless UN secretary general like the previous ones. He would redefine the office and expand its powers — simply by his visibility. And he would ceaselessly agitate within America for … “change” in the authority of the United Nations over the lives, sovereignty and tax dollars of all Americans" Also adding,
Due to this fear, the government acts defensively, without realizing how unnecessary it is. This behavior causes the alien to reciprocate with violence, too. The government’s actions ultimately causes unnecessary damage and harms more people than were originally affected. In this situation, people acted on the assumption that aliens would be violent. As previously stated, extraterrestrial life is unpredictable, but not necessarily aggressive.
The possibility of life outside of our own planet has been boggling the minds of the human race for more years than anyone can truly know, however in the summer of 1947 new information made these already known suspicions even more apparent. A leery encounter with what a local farmer would identify as a UFO would quickly arise complications with the government and mysterious men who would threaten his family if any knowledge of this got out. These men would later coin the name “The Men in Black” due to their odd task of making sure no extraterrestrial information reached the public. The importance of these unexplainable men and their habits come to the surface when you truly begin to realize
In his essay titled, "Let There Be Dark", Paul Bogard writes about the beauty of the darkness and why it should be not disappear. Bogard accomplishes delivering his purpose through the use of concered diction followed by informal diction and his use of sensory details.
“ Here is a task truly of, by and for the world, one that should rally nations. The nature of this task however, must be clearly understood; only then can suitable means for accomplishing it be formulated, only then can the role that the United Nations could and should play be appreciated” ( Wilcox/Haviland, 29). There are many international organizations that have been talked about throughout this semester. One of the most important ones is The United Nations. The United Nations was established October 24, 1945, and has since then been impacting the country. The United Nations main purpose according to the lecture notes is “ to provide a global additional structure through which states can sometimes settle conflicts with less reliance on the use of force , for whole purpose of the United Nations is to provide the globe a forum by which countries may settle disputes through this forum peacefully as opposed to relying on a force which has been the case historically” ( Kopalyan, Module 8). Thus meaning The United Nations was set up to handle problems peacefully rather than going to war to try and solve problems. “Powerful economic as well as political forces are at work to bring about a growing integration of the world community, and the United Nations and its related agencies are uniquely fitted to assist in the task” (Wilcox/Haviland,45). This was some of the reason that the United Nations was created.
