Preventing Suicide
Suicide is an extremely sensitive subject for most. Whether it is someone beloved or someone known, just about everyone knows a person that has committed suicide or has tried, but failed the attempt. Why does it seem complicated to approach someone to offer condolences, when the victim has committed suicide? Often, suicide is related to weakness when one must give up his own life to end the hurt that he or she feels. Various other situations contribute to the factor which lead to suicide, but one must look for the signs. Furthermore, understanding why people suicide and staying alerts for the signs of suicide will help prevent devastating effects that follow, possibly saving a life.
There are many reason why one would contemplate taking their own life. Rita Robinson states in her book Survivors of Suicide that this is a, “mental disorder…” (Chapter 4). Although, others would criticize and refer to suicidal people as weak or insecure it is in fact a mental condition that without medical attention, cannot always be prevented. Robison also mentions how Bipolar, schizophrenia, or individuals suffering from severe depression are especially prone to suicidal tendencies due to the fact that their brains are, “Wired differently” (Chapter 4). These mental conditions exacerbate issues for individuals that are already unable to cope with the issues one deals with in life. People have been committing suicide since the beginning of time. Suicide is defined as the death of a person, caused by self-directed injurious behavior, with any intent to die as a result of that behavior. A suicide attempt, is a non-fatal, self directed, potentially harmful behavior, with any intent to die as a result.. A suicide attempt may or may not result in personal or physical harm. Suicidal ideation is an individual having ideas and considering or planning to end his or her life. Suicide is usually carried out as a result of ultimate despair due to certain mental disorders such as severe depression, schizophrenia, borderline and bipolar personality disorders, alcoholism and or drug abuse. High stress levels and anxiety due to financial difficulties and personal relationships can also be contributing factors of suicide. According to The National Institute of Mental Health, research has shown that the majority of victims of deaths by suicide had been diagnosed with some type of depressive mental illness. Suicide and suicide attempts have a dramatic impact and take an enormous toll on society. According to recent studies by the CDC, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among Americans. CDC reports state that last year alone, there are more than 38,000 people who have committed suicide, over one million people have been reported of making a suicide attempts, and two million people have been reported of thinking

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. There are approximately 121 successful suicides a day, and 44,193 a year. Almost 50% of suicides are committed with a firearm. Seven out of ten suicides are committed by white middle aged men. It is proven that men die from suicide 3.5 times more than women; however, it is documented that women try three times more. Over the past 17 years’ suicide rates have increased steadily. Suicide rates are higher in people who are 34 and older. Whites currently hold the highest suicide rate. The most popular form of suicide is with a firearm it accounts for 49.8%. Second is suffocation at 26.8%, then poisoning at 15.4%, and other at 7.9%. No count is kept for people who attempted
The experiment that was conducted was assess whether ethnicity is associated with suicide attempts across particular groups. A cross-sectional study was used to obtain the information on suicide attempt and suicidal completion. Interview was conducted to all participants to collect ethnicity and the structured interview for DSM-IV was used for the diagnosis of our patient. Patients were categorized in two groups: attempters if they attempt at least once during their life and non-attempters if they never attempt suicide during their life. At least ten different cohorts such as age, gender, diagnosis, duration of illness and a history of alcohol or substance abuse were used. Also the patients were separated by bipolar and schizophrenia disorders.
According to the Center of Disease Control, “Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death for all ages in 2013.” Suicide is when someone takes their own lives and it is something that everyone has come into contact with. Weather is has been through the media or even a personal event. There are several causes on why people commit suicide, ranging from depression to a terminal illness. Even though there is varies aspects to suicide in the end it has the same result. Someone is taking their own life and surprisingly the number or suicides have been rising for the many years and it is something that many people ponder about.
Suicide is the wilful taking of one’s own life. Suicide is prevalent and affects people of all ages and cultures. In the UK male population suicide is now the biggest killer of middle-aged males overtaking diseases such as cancer and heart disease. A major predictor of engaging in suicidal behaviour is depression. Furthermore, it was found that 15% of clinically depressed patients would take their own lives. (HOLT). Those are only statistics but they can in no way describe the misery in which people find themselves. There are many differing factors that contribute to a person engaging in suicidal behaviour such as loss, history of mental disorder and environmental factors. There are also many theories of suicide that integrate these established risk factors such as the interpersonal theory of suicide.

Suicide cases, over the past years, have grown to be an epidemic among several communities. Many people, both young and old, lose their lives through suicide. According to reports, the number of deaths keeps escalating every year. Suicide has been one of the greatest causes of untamed deaths in every society. What is depressing is that, many a time, one is not able to predict whether their loved ones may end up committing suicide. Sometimes, the way we perceive people is not the way they are. There are many reasons to why people commit suicide. They can be mentally ill. As in, they have too many negative thought running through their head. They can sometimes feel like burdens. They could feel like they are not needed in this world. They could also need an escape from reality. Craig gets admitted into the hospital and calls his parents to tell them where he is. When Craig explains to his parents that he was suicidal they were hurt and broken. Knowing that their own child wanted to kill himself because he was depressed hurt them. Craig’s mom immediately begins to feel guilty, blaming herself for the situation. When Craig explains that he had called the suicide hotline and came to the hospital to check himself in, his mom says: “This is the bravest thing you’ve ever done”(pg.160). Knowing that her own son wanted to die hurt her a lot, but knowing that he was strong enough to be able to come to the hospital alone proved to her that she raised him the right way. Euthanasia and assisted suicide is a highly controversial topic because it literally deals with the matters of life and death. Once the procedure is done on a patient, it cannot be undone. In Canada, the issue on this topic has been discussed time and time again. The documentary The Trouble With Dying goes in depth on several patients and medical professionals as well as what their perspective on the subject is. Through this documentary, the audience was able to have an eye -opening experience and piece together their own viewpoint on the matter.
For some teens, striving for perfection has led to harming their own health and wellbeing such as living with depression and suicide. Teenagers today are relying on what they see in ads, T.V., magazines and on the internet for their input on appearances, the way they think not only comes from media sources, but from family and friends.
