What I chose to research my final paper on was the death penalty and the impacts on society it has. As the death penalty is widely discussed topic from many angles and perspectives so within this topic there was many ways for me to go about this and research it. One of the methods I personally enjoyed was watching American death row documentaries. These documentaries show a perspective that 's hard to understand from just reading it on a scholarly or pop culture source.
The death penalty was also known as “capital punishment”. Capital punishment is defined as "the punishment of execution, administered to someone legally convicted of a capital crime.” Some people may disagree with these two terms being used together, as Capital punishment

The death penalty also dates back to of the Fourteenth Century’s “Hittite Code”; in the Seventh Century 's “Draconian Code of Athens”, which made death the only punishment for all crimes; in the Fifth Century’s Roman law of the Twelve Tablets. Death sentences were carried out by such means as crucifixion, drowning, beating to death, burning alive, and impalement.
The pros and cons of the death penalty have been widely discussed with people being on both sides of the spectrum. A sociological question to ask within this is, “Should the death penalty be banned as a form of punishment?” A few pro’s that could be related to this discussion are that this practice is essentially barbaric and unjust; this practice also falls under the “cruel and unusual” clause in the bill of rights. This meaning that causing death to another human is not the answer. It is also debated that life in prison is more punishment than the death penalty. When a prisoner knows that they will be in jail the rest of their life this would be much worse than an instant death.
On the other hand of this discussion a few cons would be families tend have more closure when a loved one is murdered, they feel that criminal doesn’t deserve to live if their family or friend has died by hands of that criminal. Another con would be the fact of families feeling that justice would be served or as the “eye for an eye” term follows. For the facts and statistic portion of
The pros for the death penalty are convicting are those with serious crimes such as torture rape and murder. Capital punishment over time has become more humane because it was done by injections instead of methods used in the past. Capital punishment is the only way to stop crimes. It is believed that the threat of capital punishment reduces violent crimes. Executing convicted murders, save society money instead of keeping them in jail. The death penalty is a just and proper way of handling convicted murderers. Family’s that have lost a loved one
Now many would think what type of pros can you receive the death penalty? One pro would be retribution this is just to make sure that the person takes full reasonability of the crime they committed and know that they are being punished for it. The next one would be deterrence which will help them understand that they should engage in no form of a crime because of the consequences behind it, however, I don’t believe that it actually works all the time because many individuals learn the consequences of a crime in elementary school from DARE. Less damage is adopted to prevent more now this can mean different levels to many. Well, a criminal is like the flu, they are an airborne virus to society. They affect everyone’s life rather they realize it or not. The death penalty is actually cheaper than what people think. Society pays less for individual who are sentenced death than those who are not. The death penalty eliminates all the negative on society if a person kills someone we never have to worry about that person again because they will be put to death and never have a chance to hurt society
Why is the death penalty used as a means of punishment for crime? Is this just a way to solve the nations growing problem of overcrowded prisons, or is justice really being served? Why do some view the taking of a life morally correct? These questions are discussed and debated upon in every state and national legislature throughout the country. Advantages and disadvantages for the death penalty exist, and many members of the United States, and individual State governments, have differing opinions. Yet it seems that the stronger arguments, and evidence such as cost effectiveness, should lead the common citizen to the opposition of Capital Punishment.
The debate on whether or not the death penalty should be abolished has been ongoing for quite a long period of time. While there are those who believe that the death penalty does not serve its intended purpose, proponents of the same are convinced that the relevance of the same cannot be overstated and hence it should not be abolished. In this text, I examine the arguments for and against the death penalty.
The death penalty is one of the greatest controversial punishments in the world. There are numerous people who agree with this practice and plenty more who do not agree and believe we should be done with it all together. Some important credential people who give compelling arguments for abolishing the death penalty is Diann Rust-Tierney and Barry Scheck, whereas; the people against abolishing it is Robert Blecker and Kent Scheidegger.
There are many pros and cons when discussing whether or not the death penalty should be used. Proponents in favor of the death penalty claim that it saves the government money by not forcing taxpayers to pay for the cost of housing inmates in prison, and help reduce prison overcrowding. Those who are in favor of the death penalty also believe that it is a reasonable punishment for those who commit heinous and violent crimes, and that use of the death penalty deters possible offenders. Also, some believe that it helps ease the mind of the victim’s family because they know that the offender will never harm anyone
The death penalty is defined as the punishment of execution, administered to someone legally convicted of a capital crime. The death penalty goes as far back to the Eighteenth Century B.C. in the Code of Hammurabi. In the Code of Hammurabi it had a death penalty for 25 different crimes. Back then methods of execution were crucifixion, drowning, beating to death, burning alive, and impalement. (Source #1).
James Madison once stated that, “Among the numerous advantages promised by a well-constructed Union, none deserves to be more accurately developed than its tendency to break and control the violence of faction” (Madison, 1787). What Madison meant by this was that factions, or groups of people with similar ideas, are bad for the nation since they do all they can to better their faction instead of bettering their nation. Thankfully in America, factions usually get controlled by equally powerful opposing factions. These parties usually have opposing viewpoints for several reasons and in a way make sure that citizens don’t have to all think in the same way. Furthermore, the issues of the death penalty, abortion, and the influence of religion of
The death penalty is when the state executes someone who has committed a capital crime, such as murder. The death penalty can be traced back all the way to the Code of King Hammurabi in the 18th century. The first recorded death sentence took place in Egypt where a man of nobility was committed of a crime and ordered to take his own life. In a non-member of nobility was committed of a crime then they would usually be put to death by ax. (Site?) In the 5th century BC, the Roman Twelve Tablets used the death penalty to control slaves and freemen, they executions would often include crucifixion, drowning, or being buried alive. Socrates’s death became the most notoriously known after he had to drink poison for his corruption of the youth.
Capital punishment is a method of retributive punishment as old as civilization itself. Both the Greeks and the Romans invoked the death penalty for a wide variety of
Early death penalty laws were first established in the Eighteenth Century B.C. in Babylon under the Code of King Hammurabi. It codified the death penalty for 25 different types of crimes. The Death Penalty allowed death as the only punishment available for all crimes. In the Fifth Century B.C. Roman Law of the Twelve Tablets (1) . First of all, the death penalty a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offenses. Death sentence was fund in 18th century BC, the code of King Hammurabi's law. Death penalty is the execution of an offender who is sentenced to death after being convicted for committing a heinous crime. Death penalty differs from extrajudicial penalty in the sense that for a person to be penalised to death he or she must be convicted by law, whereas extrajudicial penalty is carried out without the permission of the court. Death penalty and capital punishment are often used interchangeably but there is a marked difference between the two. Death penalty becomes capital punishment after a person is killed. Still, many believe that both are one and the same. (Bohm, 2007)
Since the mid 1900’s, capital punishment has brought many individuals into many diverse view points throughout the years. Capital punishment is a way of punishing a convict by killing him or her because of the crime he or she committed. Capital punishment will always have its pros and cons. There are opponents who absolutely disagree with capital punishment. And then there are advocates who support the idea. In the advocates view point, capital punishment is a way to minimize the threat in the world today. In the opponent’s point of view, opponents disagree with capital punishment, because of the high expenses it brings to the states. Also, opponents argue that capital punishment
