Antarctica is the coldest continent on earth, and a climate of extremes. The continent is snow and ice-covered. The temperatures is freezing all year round. So-called "Catabian winds" can cause violent snowstorms that can last for days, and sometimes even weeks, making it very dangerous to stay outside. Antarctica knows periods of continual daylight an darkness, called "polar summer" (end May - Sept) and "polar winter" (end Nov - March). The polar summer with daytime temperatures between -20°C and -5°C is the only time to travel to Antarctica, because the conditions are too bad during the winter months, with extreme cold temperatures, violent storms, continuous darkness and ice-bound seas. Antarctica's lowest air temperature record was set
The tundra, which comes from the Finnish word, tunturi, which means treeless, is the coldest terrestrial biome known to biologists (University of California Museum of Paleontology). Located in the northern hemisphere, between 55° and 70° North, the Tundra covers about 20% of Earth’s surface (S). Although tundras can be found in many of the continents, most notably, the Northern Alaska, Canada and Greenland Tundra and the Scandinavian Montane Birch forest and grasslands stand out the most (Gardella). They are all large tourists attractions disply nature’s ability to thrive in the harshest environments. Winters in the tundra have an average temperature of -30° F, due to its high altitude. However, the average temperatures in the tundra during
They found are rarely found in the north of Antarctica than in the south of the continent. According to the Animal Diversity website, the Emperor Penguins are restricted to the cold waters of Antarctic. The website also states that “Their terrestrial range is limited to the fast ice, continental shelf, and surrounding islands between 68 and 78 degrees south latitude”. The habitat of the penguin is Antarctica and it is also known as a Tundra biome. Antarctica is located in the south of the earth where it holds the South Pole of the world. About 98% of the Emperor Penguin’s habitat is made up of ice and it is a very harsh habitat because of its cold climate. The Emperor Penguin shares its habitat with other penguins, seals, lichens, mosses, and different types of algae. Their habit is not disturbed by humans because there are no humans living in the cold continent, only a few scientific
Antarctica is one of the most rapid warming areas on the Earth, climate change on Antarctica is crucial to the world and the continent itself. Although climate change on Antarctica isn't widespread as it a wide place, only a small amount of impact is taking place. Some areas in Antarctica are experiencing decreases within the sea ice whereas other areas have an increase in sea ice. Both changes are causing negative impacts on wildlife. (Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, 2014) Climate change has been a continuing scientific curiosity. Climate change is raising many concerns on not only the environmental and regulatory concerns but also within the economy, health, security, safety, and food production. (UNEP, 2009)
Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and most inhospitable continent on Earth. Yet it is yields some 90 percent of the Earth most precious natural resource: water. But behind this pristine exterior, Antarctica is fighting a losing battle. New data suggests that the continent as a whole is warming at an alarming rate. According to recent studies gathered from Nature Magazine, the western half of the continent is warming five times faster than any other place
Frequent, gusty winds blow from the interior sections toward the coast, and blizzards are common along the foot of the plateau. Cold temperatures are spread across the continent. The more elevated elevations around East Antarctica allow for the coldest temperatures. A sweater climate is located on the Antarctic Penisula, where temperatures level out nearer to 32 degrees fahrenheit.
When thinking of Alaska, everyone thinks of snow all year round. But they do have months without snow and freezing temperatures. From September to April, these are usually the months with snow and freezing temperatures. In south central Alaska where Anchorage is located, major city in Alaska, winter temperatures can go as low -25 degrees Fahrenheit and the summer it can go as high up as 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Alaska has many kinds of landscape. There’s flat terrain, mountains, and hill country. Denali is a major national park where the tallest mountain in north America is located. Alaska is surrounded by the Beaufort Sea, Arctic Ocean, and
Antarctica has one of the only two polar ice caps on the planet Earth. It is called the Antarctic ice sheet and it covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent. Wikipedia says this is the largest ice mass on Earth; it covers about 5.4 million square miles, and is
Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in the Antarctic are fascinating flightless birds that are able to withstand incredibly harsh environments, where wind chills can reach to -76°F. Even though these penguins are able to survive the freezing temperatures, their breeding success and mortality rates are based primarily on the sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice extent (SIE) throughout the seasons. Sea ice concentration is a variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators to find the area of sea ice compared to the total at a given point in the ocean, whereas sea ice extent refers to a region as “ice-covered” or “not ice-covered.” During the late 1970s, there was an elongated atypical warm period with reduced
temperature in summer season is about " 35C" whereas in winters is very low "-50C".
Did you know that swimming became an Olympic sport in 1908, but women were not allowed to participate until 1912? That same year, Australian swimmer, Fanny Durack, became the first woman to win a gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle. Why do you think that woman weren't allowed the first few years? Is it because some believed women were not tough enough to handle it? In Lynn Cox’s memoir Swimming to Antarctica (Tales of a Long Distance Swimmer), Cox not only expresses the dedication and determination it takes to be an Olympic long distance swimmer, but that she also states that personal dreams are achievable if one is willing enough to work hard to achieve their goals. Cox found the water to be very peaceful in her first distance race at a young age, ever since then, she felt as though she finally found what she was meant to do. If Cox needs any gift at all, it would be a picture of her 2 years before she started long distance swimming. That picture would show her how much she improved because when she was young she used be very concerned about how slow of a swimmer she was. Also she would be able to inspire not only herself but other people who feel the same way.
Antarctica is not techanicaly in the arctic circle but is considered tundra because of how harsh the cold tempatures are.
Antarctica is a cold, frozen, and mostly empty land found at the South Pole of the earth. Humans go there mostly for research and occasional tourism, though it's incredibly inhospitable, especially in the colder months. Due to the harsh environment, it remains the last true wilderness on earth and is protected by an international agreement called the Antarctic Treaty of 1961. In this Treaty, world leaders agreed that everywhere south of 60° south latitude would remain unclaimable by any country.
The novel Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World by Jennifer Armstrong clearly addresses this question for its readers. The weather systems, with winds of up to 200 miles per hour [322 km/h] that howl up from the Antarctica, are one reason [Drake’s Passage] is so treacherous. The other reason is geography. Unlike the other continents, Antarctica is completely surrounded by ocean, and there is no significant land to obstruct the rushing waves. Ocean rollers can travel 12,000 miles [19,312 km] around the globe at the sixtieth parallel and never bump into anything.
Cold, snowy, and dark. When you hear those three words something should come to your mind, and it should particularly be Alaska. Being a very dry and cold region, some parts of Alaska can drop minus-30 for weeks at a time. On the other hand, we have Arizona. Arizona is almost the complete opposite as it is dry but terribly hot.
Climate change is a problem in the world today. Climate change is destroying Antarctica, endangering hundreds of millions of lives, and can be effectively reduced by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
