Studies have shown the link between extracurricular activities and improved attendance, behavior, and academic performance. As the director of student engagement, my role is to manage extracurricular and intramural athletics for the district. I work to develop and implement accessible programs and services while ensuring compliance with district policies as well as state and federal laws and regulations. According to Kimiko Fujita, “participation in extracurricular activities is associated with improved grade point averages, higher educational aspirations, increased college attendance, and reduced absenteeism” (The Effects, 2006). Extracurricular involvement allows students to develop interpersonal skills such as leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline, self-confidence, and the ability to handle competitive situations. Working outside of the classroom requires students to develop time-management and organizational skills. Consequently, in offering various activities, schools will have the opportunity to develop the “whole student.” There are many health benefits associated with school-based athletics including the ability to improve fitness, develop cognitive skills and manage stress. “Participation in organized sports provides protective effects against a range of risk behaviors especially prevalent in adolescence. Girls who play sports are more likely to postpone sexual activity; girls and boys who participate are less likely to smoke or use illegal substances” (Rosewater, 2010). After school programs target at-risk students by providing outlets to vent energy in a positive way.
