Over the past few years, scientists are becoming convinced that climate change caused by mankind has the potential to change Earth forever. If greenhouse gases weren’t there, global temperatures would be around 20-30 degrees Celsius colder than it is now. This may be too cold for life on Earth to survive. The main force behind Earth’s climate is energy from the Sun. Energy travels from the Sun in short waves infrared radiation. Some of the infrared radiation that travels from the Sun does not get past the Earth’s atmosphere, but, a lot of it does and it is then absorbed by the land and the sea, and heats them up. There are always natural variations in climate, however the variations caused by humans are much greater.
Our planet now, is extremely different to how it was 300 years ago. The population is now a lot larger. There has been the industrial revolution and there is more technology around today. We’ve used a lot of fossil fuels and we are now almost completely reliant on them to do most things in our day-to-day lives. When fossil fuels are burned, they produce a gas called carbon dioxide, which is also known as CO2. The human race is now producing quite huge quantities of carbon dioxide, over 7 gigatonnes a year.
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that is found naturally in the Earth’s atmosphere. All the extra carbon dioxide, produced by burning fossil fuels, is making the greenhouse gases around the Earth too effective. In other words less energy escapes back into space. Instead, the trapped energy in our atmosphere heats up the Earth’s climate, causing climate change. There are also other things humans are doing that are increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. Plants and treed absorb carbon dioxide as they use it to make food through photosynthesis. This is another cause of an increase in carbon dioxide because of the amount of deforestation that is taking place. Over the years Carbon Dioxide has been significantly increasing from human activity. CO2 has a concentration of about 400 ppmv (parts per million volume). Its concentration in the atmosphere was about 280 ppmv before the Industrial Revolution, now it has increased immensely to about 380 ppmv in 2006. Many have said Carbon Dioxide has been the main reason or cause of global warming; saying that if we produce too much of this greenhouse gas it can create a global climate change. Even though carbon dioxide affects the temperature of the atmosphere it also affects the acidity of water specifically in the ocean.
Carbon dioxide is very important in the atmosphere, however only in moderation. For centuries humans have been burning coal, oil, and fossil fuels therefore releasing tons of carbon into the air. The problem with this is that this can cause a problem known as global warming. This is a major climate problem, which has series results on people and the environment. The result on people can be very deadly. Too much carbon in the air can cause cancer.
The result is that humans are adding ever-increasing amounts of extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Because of this, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations are higher today than they have been over the last half-million years or longer.

Climate change can be defined as a significant change in the “average weather” of any given region sustained in the long-term and can be caused by Earth 's dynamic processes, external forces including variations in sunlight intensity, and also by human activities (USEPA, 2014).
But many climate scientists will tell you that this change in climate is due to humans and their activities. It is said that humans release greenhouse gases and “if emissions continue unchecked, they say the global warming could ultimately exceed 8 degrees Fahrenheit, which would transform the planet and undermine its capacity to support a large human population” (Gillis, 2015). To make it easier to understand, as sunlight reaches the Earth’s surface there are two things that can be done, one; it can either be reflected back into space or two, it can be absorbed by the Earth. Once the Earth absorbs the sunlight, it then releases some energy back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation, also known as heat. Then these greenhouse gases tend to act like a “blanket,” therefore making the Earth warmer than it would be otherwise.
