In the United States, over 3,000 abortions occur on a daily basis.1 This statistic illustrates the reality that over 3,000 children are denied their right to live by their own mothers. Being one of the most debated topics in American society today, it is important to understand the effects of abortion on society. Those who are referred to as Pro-Choice support the woman’s right to control her own body, and those who are referred to as Pro-Life support the rights of the unborn child. Each side has an argument for their stance, and each side firmly and unwaveringly believes in their perspective. An amendment should be passed to prohibit abortion on a constitutional level, and whether or not states will pass this proposed amendment depends on …show more content…
The act of abortion has desensitized the majority of Americans today. Abortion is murder, and even worse, it has become normal and accepted in society. Pro-Choice activists are convinced that a woman has a right to the privacy of her own body and a right to abort her pregnancy. Pro-Choice activists believe that because a fetus in the first trimester cannot survive outside the womb they are not yet human. Therefore, Pro-Choice activists believe that a fetus in the first trimester cannot be given human rights. The argument that a fetus is not human based on its ability to survive on its own is not a valid argument. Within the first trimester, or the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus has developed a heartbeat, fingerprints, and the functioning of all body systems.2 The fetus is alive and should have every right that the mother has. If an infant were to be left alone without someone to care for it, it could not survive on its own. This should not be cause to terminate the life of the infant. An infant is a human being, and therefore, has rights that are protected under the Constitution. The same rights should be extended to the fetus that is developing in the first trimester. Giving a woman the right to terminate the life of a fetus is the same as giving someone the right to murder innocent people. The only difference between the two is that women are now guaranteed the right to murder their baby if they so choose. If an amendment to prohibit abortion were to be passed, it would extend the rights of Americans to a developing baby in the first
One of the first moral issues addressed by both sides of the abortion debate concerns a pregnant woman’s so-called natural “right” to make “reproductive choices.” (“The Rights of Pregnant Women”) Anti-abortion advocacy groups claim that “the only way to actually protect the mother’s rights will be by enforcing laws that secure her child’s right to life,” (“Argument 2”) whereas pro-abortion groups contend that these laws “create a dangerous precedent for wide-ranging government intrusion into the lives of all women.” (“The Rights”) With two fundamentally contrasting viewpoints at odds with each other, it is apparent that one of the core issues concurrent with abortion is a woman’s rights versus the rights of her unborn fetus.
In contemporary America it can be argued that nothing is more contentious and controversial of an issue than abortion. From the vehement pro-life movement to the impassioned pro-choice coalition, this policy issue is one that has become increasingly important in our society. This debate has raised important questions regarding the value of human life, at what stage of development does a fetus have it’s constitutionally ensured rights take hold over that of the mother and at what stage can a state start regulating abortions.
Abortion is a hot topic in United States politics as of late, and rightly so. Though religion, costs, maternal psychological damage, and societal morality are often cited as reasons to oppose abortion, a woman’s right to make her own decisions should always prevail. Abortion should be nationally legalized during the first trimester of pregnancy because Roe V. Wade has declared abortion a “fundamental right” to women, fetuses are incapable of feeling pain during the period when most abortions take place, women should be given the right to choose what happens with their body, and access to legal abortions decreases the
Every 3 minutes, 9 innocent babies will have been aborted in the U.S. alone. Approximately 93% of women state they have abortions due to ‘social reasons’(inconvenient, unwanted), and less than 1% of abortions occur due to rape/incest. On behalf of the decision of the Roe v. Wade ruling, which made abortion legal during all nine months of pregnancy in 1973, there have been 56,993,299 documented abortions. “In 2000 [alone], more children died from abortion than Americans died in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars combined” (“Abortion Statistics”). Being pro-life should be the only option for women due to homicide, health risks, and the violation of civil and human rights.
The United States has been divided now over the issue of abortion for thirty-three years since the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade in 1973. As of today, over 45 million legal abortions have been performed in the United States. Pro-choice advocates hold these 45 million abortions as being 45 million times women have exercised their right to choose to get pregnant and to choose to control their own bodies. To pro-life, or anti-abortion, advocates these 45 million abortions constitute 45 million murders, a genocide of human life in the United States propagated by the court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade. The debate over abortion in the United States is thus a debate of two extremes. One side argues from the personal liberty of the mother. The
Abortion has been a controversial topic regarding the political, religious, spiritual, and economical views of many Americans throughout history. Understanding the difference between pursuing abortion or rejecting it at the end is an individuals option. Abortion refers to the voluntary termination of a pregnancy, resulting in the death of the fetus or embryo.(CITE) Therefore, throughout the entire life journey of Congress and legal rights, there has been a drift of thoughts towards abortion. It can be represented both parties that advocate for “pro-choice” or “pro-life” and there can be two sides presented with both arguments. After many debates and thoughts on this legal topic, one must consider if it fair and valid to legalize abortion
Each year there are roughly 6 million pregnancies in the U.S., with 20% resulting in the termination of the fetus, or abortion in other terms. Mathematically, that is estimated to be 1.2 million babies that have no hope for a future outside the womb (American Pregnancy). Everyone has a right to life; this right is exercised in many parts of the American life, namely the Declaration of Independence (The Abortion Controversy 113-116). Therefore, the United States’ federal government should go to greater lengths to prohibit these so called ‘abortions’ in every case, regardless of the situation. It matters not what the women who get these abortions think, and it matters to many that this is looked upon to be immoral (Guttmacher, The Abortion
Anti-abortion arguments rely strongly on religious beliefs. These religion-based arguments threaten the vital separation of church and state that we should have in this country. One pro-life argument states that abortion directly contradicts our founding father’s intention for an unalienable right to life, but the fact is that banning abortion contradicts a woman’s right to the pursuit of happiness, and in some cases, even her right to life. In many people’s eyes, the fetus is not yet a human being, but no one can deny that the mother is. It is wrong to take away her rights for the “rights” of an unborn fetus.
When the topic of abortion is discussed people tend to assume one of two standpoints: “pro-life,” they believe that the woman should not have the right to abort a human life because it would be murder or “pro-choice,” they believe that the woman carrying the fetus should be given the ability to decide whether to carry the baby to term or to abort it. Although Americans are divided on the subject of abortion by these beliefs, most do not fall strictly on one side or the other and ultimately the majority favor restricted availability. Abortion is a cruel and disgusting crime, but some still think that it is okay (Arguments For and Against Abortion).
Since 1973, a total of 57,496,011 abortions have been reported to the Centers of Disease Control and that number keeps rising. This does not include the self-induced abortions or the abortions your body causes, also known as miscarriage. There are so many different procedures throughout the years. In the early years, many women did not seek help from licensed medical assistance. They attempted removal of the fetus with a coat-hanger also piercing of the fetus with a knitting needle, crochet hook, hat pin, bobby pin or similar device inserted into the uterus through the cervix. Many women also used douching methods linked to miscarriage to abort the baby such as Clorox bleach or lye which could also cause chemical burns. In the 1960s women also used Coca-Cola to send their bodies into aborting the fetus. The Induction abortion takes approximately three to four days to complete. On the first day, the young woman is given an ultrasound to determine the age of her baby. Then, the abortionist with the help of an ultrasound to guide them. The patient will then receive a lethal dose of the heart medication Digoxin, a generic drug, is injected into the baby’s heart or into the amniotic fluid directly through the woman’s abdomen or vaginally, the Digoxin will give the baby a fatal heart attack. Although the reason for killing the baby first is to avoid a live birth. After the drug is injected, the woman’s cervix is inserted with Laminaria sticks or tent, a thin tampon-like
A woman’s choice is her choice, she should chose what she wants to do with her body, and when and where she wants to do it. Stopping abortions would not only result in the sky rocketing of illegal life threatening abortions, it is also a major step back, after numerous attempts at a step foreword. The prohibition of abortion not only has a negative impact on the child, but also a negative impact on the mother forced to raise the child, especially if the mother is young and
The greatest destruction of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me. Abortion is causing many damages in the humanity. Many circumstances are causing it, and the dangers of it are being more consequent and consistent. Think about the right of the child before taking his life. To stop it we need to find solutions. Abortion is badly affecting the American society. Why not giving the child the right to taste his life?
Wendy Davis served on the Fort Worth city council and represented district 10 in the Texas senate from 2009 to 2015. She is a democrat in a historically republican state with strong views on abortion, gun laws, and the death penalty. She is also a woman in an occupation highly dominated by men. Recently, abortion has been a highly controversial topic, fueling heated debates in Congress and among state officials. In 2013, Wendy Davis took a stand on abortion and held a successful, 13-hour filibuster to delay the passing of an abortion bill. This brought national attention to her legacy and to Texas’ efforts in abortion prevention.
Many people think of abortion as a way of killing a child alive while they don’t know facts about it. Abortion has various positive sides that help women have a comfortable life. However, there are effects behind banning abortion such as a social effect, a physical effect and a psychological effect.
Every year over half a million women get abortions. Most women get abortions for different vindication; Countless are pressured by parents, boyfriends, or spouses. Many of the women who get abortions feel like that's the only option and may not have all of the information about abortions.Abortion has many negative effects physically and psychologically on women that aren’t commonly talked about or known.
