Introduction:
Stress is defined as “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.” Everyone deals with a situation throughout their life that results in stress. While everyone harbors stress, stress is especially apparent in college students. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the country’s largest grassroots mental health organization, rates of anxiety and depression have skyrocketed in what many are calling a crisis of mental health on college campuses. More than 5 million college students struggle with mental health (Heck). Because of this, it is pertinent that one finds healthy coping mechanisms.
Music is a plays a large part in every culture. No matter where you are from or what you believe, music plays a significant role in the average human, but also college students. There are many reasons why people chose to listen to music. Recently studies have shown that people consciously or not, listen to music to work out their problems. In a world full of chaos, it is of great importance that we are not only physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well. That leads one to ask, how does listening to music actually help one cope with stress?
Findings: Music and the Brain
The calming power of music is not always known, but on college campuses music is a necessity to everyday life. I observed in my interviews, as well as my online poll, that music allows students to escape reality and eases stress.
Not only does music affect thought, but it also benefits health. Students usually study in quiet, relaxed surroundings while listening to serene music. Classical music can steady a fast heartbeat and a slower heartbeat induces relaxation. Exercise plays a critical role in maintaining good health, and relaxing music can be favorable to this. Music reduces muscle tension, resulting in a better work out. Scientists performed controlled studies using adult males who were around twenty-five years old. Blood samples were taken before and after treadmill running. The experiment found that with the presence of music, “heart rate, blood pressure, and lactate secretion in the brain were significantly lower” . The results proved that music
One article states that, “The researchers speculated that the music put students in a heightened emotional state, making them more receptive to information.” I can relate to this head on. I don’t like school, never have and most likely never will. After getting up at 5 in the morning and dealing with stupid noisy kids on the bus ride to school I can say with confidence that my mood has become increasingly worse by this point in the day. When I personally am in a bad mood I am more “unwilling” to pay attention which makes me less
When you've had a rough day at work, and rush hour traffic has frazzled your nerves, you might put on your favorite music and let the days tensions melt away. It helps you refocus your energy so you can enjoy your time off with friends and family without the worry and stress. But, did you know that music is actually scientifically proven to reduce stress? Next time you're feeling the effects of a stressful day, turn on some calming music and let it play throughout your home and you'll find yourself calming down, becoming happier and more relaxed in no time.
While playing in or listening to a symphony, orchestra, or band, people do not only make or listen to beautiful music, but they get to experience many positive side effects. Michael Jolkovski (2013), a man who studies music, says, “It [music] can satisfy the need to unwind from the worries of life, but unlike the other things people often use for this purpose, such as excessive eating, drinking, or TV or aimless web browsing, it makes people more alive and connected with one another (1).” This statement shows how stress levels lower when one plays music. Both
The first section covers a study about how music reduces the anxiety in patients with coronary heart disease, mechanically ventilated patients, cancer patients, and patients awaiting surgical procedures. Secondly, they found that music is becoming more commonly used as an alternative to anti-anxiety drugs. In addition, they also found a study on how blood pressure is affected by music. results show that music only made small reductions in blood pressure when it was used in hypertensive patients to help guide slow and regular breathing. The next study mentioned, shows that music also helps to reduce pain in patients, because music affects the brain's opioid and oxytocin mechanisms, but similar to blood pressure the results show that it only made small reductions. Furthermore, the authors found more studies that show that music helped to improve sleep quality due to muscle-assisted relaxation; and also found studies that showed that pleasant music can activate the reward system to help treat depression that can lead to cardiovascular
Students should be able to listen to music in study hall because it can help improve their learning experience, they will be willing to do more things without being asked and argue less and they will be happy to do their work with a little incentive. A study at University of Wales in the UK shows that music helps improve a student's test scores. It also helps them remember things in a certain order known as serial recall. They set up five different scenarios first it was quiet then they tested it with steady speech meaning a single word was played throughout the test, then with a variety of words were played. There were two more test with liked and unliked music scenarios they showed that listening to music increased their
Musical instruments have played many major roles in helping with the construction of many societies around the world today. Many people do not realize what musical instruments have been responsible for and how they have helped shape the world today. There have been many instruments that have helped create and sculpt the world, but one instrument that I want to inform readers about is the trumpet and where it came from, as well as how it has changed over many years. The point that I am arguing is the fact that many people do not know where the trumpet has come from and how it has affected society.
Abundant examples exist since the beginning of the written human record about how music affects mood and can be used to soothe or torture, but what about whether or not music can help us maintain and support the function of our brains? There is no question that music plays a significant role in people’s lives, but the question of our brain’s reaction to music constantly makes me wonder how music could improve our brain function. Increasingly, research is focusing on how music, particularly music education, can make a difference in how our brains process and file information. Research supports the idea that music is processed in a unique area of the brain, there may be an optimal window for learning
In recent years, scientists have begun to do extensive research on the brains of individuals. Surprisingly, the brain only makes up two percent of a person’s mass but uses around twenty percent of the whole body’s energy and oxygen (Alban, 2016, para. 9). Although the brains of humans process sound in the auditory cortex, studies have shown that music boosts areas of the brain that are more closely associated with memory, emotions, and fine motor skills (Theismann, 2015, para. 4). Because of this association, music has major impacts on the brains of babies, children, and the elderly.
The effect of music on the human brain may have much stronger powers than one might think. Music can directly improve brain functioning depending on the musical genre. Some studies show, music whether listening or playing, is able to improve the ability to process speech, evoke different emotions, stifle sound when concentrating, and help heal ill patients with cancer or memory disorders (Gholipour). Thats not all, also music can boost reaction time, bring back memories more clearly, and release dopamine in the human brain(Ellis). Scientist know this because of the findings in last few decades in which they have used modernized technology such as a positron emission tomography scanners to view a persons brain while listening to music and while playing it too.
As you can see, music and dance are very influential in the culture of Brazil. Therefore, music education is also important in the lives of the Brazilian people. Children are exposed to music from an early age through family and community. Unfortunately, music education is not highly regarded in the school system. The amount of music education differs greatly by school and teachers. Most public schools do not have a special music teacher or department. In order to be well educated in music a student would need to attend a private school or a conservatory. As we transition into talking about education, we see that there are many different positives and negatives to school in southern Brazil.
Every person on Earth has their own way of coping with the difficulties associated with life. As people combat daily life, many find music to be beneficial to their health. Studies have shown that music “can provide solace, release, strong sensations, and more” (Dean). There are certain people who are more affected by such stimulation and are more susceptible to the effects of music. These affects not only occur physically, but mentally as well. It was also discovered that “those who had extra-curricular music classes, developed higher verbal IQ, and visual abilities, in comparison to those with no musical training” (Forgeard). The effect of music on an individual is influenced by their personality and mood and can be influential to the
The article “The effects of music on achievement, attitude and retention in primary school English lessons” by Koksal, Yagisan, and Cekic show the impact music has in the classroom. The Article claims “best learning environment is one that includes music” (Köksal, et al. 1897). Meaning music activates different parts of the brain that coincide with memory. Through an experimental study mentioned in the article shows music has a “increased achievement in English vocabulary learning” (Köksal, et al. 1899). Memory channels are activated and students are able to retain what is being taught through the use of music. Therefore the article suggests music is a method that can be used in primary schools to exercise the mind helping students hold onto what they learn for longer periods of time. The authors argue music brings out a different level of intelligence in the classroom. However the article fails to briefly describe traditional methods, other possible methods, and possible defaults of a music learning environment jeopardizing a overall well conducted study of music used as a source of education.
Technological advances in society have helped shape classical music. Music has become more and more accessible over the years. Formerly only being heard in concert, Classical music can now be heard over the internet through downloads, videos, mp3s, streaming etc. This means that the audience for the music which was once small has expanded greatly. People stumble across videos on youtube and become aware of music they didn’t realise existed. Radio was developed during the end of the 19th century, creating the first demonstration of wireless communication. During the early 20th century, radio was developed enough to start sending voice signals as opposed to Morse code.
Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music.” These were the words of Sergei Rachmaninoff, a Russian composer and pianist who was very influential in the twentieth century. Everybody knows what music is and they all have heard a form of it but most people underestimate the value and power music has in our everyday lives. Whether they know it or not music plays a vital role in the lives of people today. Music is a very efficient tool that help people, it plays a huge part in today’s society. music has a lot of influence and has a lot of forms of expression. For example, you can see, hear and feel music. Music can enlighten you, make you depressed or make you think of love. Music can keep traditions alive. I'm pretty sure I will sing the same songs to my children, that my parents sang to me when I was a little child. Music is also known for its ability to "save lives". People who are very depressed and alone can find comfort in listening to certain singers, bands or songs. Everybody, including myself, has experienced something like this. For example, losing your grandparents or lover. Listening to music gets you all the way through the pain. Music can also remind you of how things were. When I listen to old music from the 60's or 70's, even I (born in the 90's) get some kind of (missing my country) feeling. Music can also help you form opinions or give you different views of society. Of course, music can also deliver poetic messages, or it can just
