Since the start of my education and ability to understand, I’ve always been taught to accept others despite their differences. I’ve learned to not judge people based on appearances but their actions. For some time I never found myself having issues with those who smoked. However, once I started getting older I became more aware of all the little nuisances that came with smoking. The smoke, behaviors and health concerns began to stand out to the point where it seemed like there were flashing signs above those who smoked. Once I learned in-depth about all the hazards, I became much more aware of how much I did not like cigarettes and how I began to dislike their users. Now my everyday life is, ironically, surrounded by these users. Every day …show more content…
There’s a great fear knowing that their lives can be cut down by fourteen years because of their habit.
My belief is that people who do partake in smoking are doing it for leisure. I think since smoking cigarettes have been glorified as being cool and trendy that many tend to participate because “everyone else is doing it”. For me, that seems illogical and leads to the assumption that people who smoke are carless. Those who are willing to risk their lives every day over a piece of paper and toxic glue can be unreasonable. Most if not all people who chose to smoke know the risks, yet they let an addiction begin anyway. That’s where the confusion comes in. I cannot understand why someone would be willing to take those chances. It’s challenging to see the people I love the most go through such an addiction. My best friend of eleven years has recently started smoking cigarettes. I remember when we were still children pledging to say no to smoking and now years later she has become a victim of cigarettes. The thing is, she uses cigarettes as a recreational use and has no real purpose of lighting one. I can’t comprehend why she does that, and despite multiple efforts to ask her to stop, she still uses cigarettes. Since she has upped her dosage to almost finishing her pack of cigarettes a day, I can no longer find the tolerance to hang out with her. Cigarettes are taking the ones I love away from me. It has shown me that it has the power to break the strongest
When someone close to me developed lung cancer,I began to think differently about smoking. A friend of mine,Charlotte Delbo, smoked cigarettes, she developed lung cancer from smoking them. Now,whenever I see smokers,I feel scared for them I saw Charlotte suffer so much. Charlotte was a brave women. During World War II In France, she fought against the Nazis. But she was eventually caught, she was sent to a concentration camp as a political prisoner. The conditions in the camps were horrific, she survived .After the liberation,Charlotte smoked cigarettes. In the early 1980s,her doctors told her that she had lung cancer, they said they could not cure her because she was already too sick. Charlotte survived the Nazis, she could not survive the long term
My mom started smoking cigarettes back when she was “a sophomore in high school,” stating that the start of her habit was due to “peer pressure,” and the fact that “it was the cool thing to do” since “all of (her) friends were doing it” (Menard 1). Every day after school, she and her friends used to ride around in their cars and smoke, and it even became a type of release for her from everyday life. What first began as something to do with her friends slowly turned into an addiction, an idea she never thought possible in the first place. Soon after her start with the usage of cigarettes, she was hooked.
It is a difficult thing to admit when you are wrong. So many people refuse to face the problem that their smoking is not only killing them, but also those around them. They have a million and one reasons as to why the rest of us should not care about what they are doing to themselves. However, all of those reasons are simply justifications for a habit that leaves everyone worse off. The result is always going to be one of regret and unhappiness. Whether it is a life threatening medical condition or, in the worst of cases, death; that seemingly harmless haze
I grew up with two of my uncles chewing tobacco, and now one of my closest friends. I watched them pack dip after dip, day after day. As a child, I was unaware of the effects. As I grew older, my anxiety for their overall health became very concerning. I never wanted to be the one who had a relative or friend develop a disease, or pass away from something that could have so easily been prevented. As I did more research in college, I knew I wanted to become a person who could be an advocate for others on this topic. By helping others quit this terrible, life threatening habit.
One can have the necessary servings of fruit and vegetables, or exercise daily but healthy actions mean little if one continues to smoke. The message, “don’t smoke, it’s bad” might be a cliché now, but not everyone has given it the attention it requires. When one puts the killing thing in their mouth, and lights it, they are giving the cigarette the power to do the killing. Smoking is one of the greatest causes of disease and death worldwide due to the infinite amount of harsh, and injurious chemicals inhaled. There are more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, many of which are poisonous and a minimum of 60 of those chemicals are cancerous. When the tobacco smoke is exhaled, there is some tar that is placed in the lungs and the tiny hair
1. Tobacco smoking is one of the leading risk aspects for many diseases including cardiovascular disease (CVD), respiratory disease, and cancers of the lung and multiple other sites (Zheng, 2014). ‘Cigarette smoking and its impact on fracture healing is article based on the chemicals used in cigarettes and the impact it has on the human healing process (Carter, 2015). Whereas ‘Burden of Total and Cause-Specific Mortality’ is a research on tobacco smoking over the age of 45 in Asia and the association of smoking and death (Zheng,2014). The Other risk links to smoking like consumption of alcohol and a lack of public awareness of the risks of tobacco.
Smoking is an addictive habit that has been killing people all over the world for hundreds of years. About 25% of adults smoke and about 30% of all adolescents use some type of tobacco product (“Smoking”). Statistics show that the majority of tobacco users began as a teenager, around thirteen years of age (Miller). The human population is supposed to have innate instincts to do all they can to survive and extend their lives, but individuals still make the choice to smoke and may not take into account all of the detrimental consequences their actions could have. When an individual lights up a cigarette, they are not only harming themselves, but also others around them and the environment.
Given all the warnings and precautions associated with tobacco products, some people still manage to find reasons to use tobacco products. Some might disagree with the position of smoking being banned in public because they figuratively have on blinders which skew their sense of judgement. For instance, the article “Why do young adult smokers continue to smoke despite the health risks” Gough et al. state that, “While there is clear awareness of health issues among our young smokers, a collective view is generated wherein such concerns do not (currently) apply – they are issues for older people...” (216). As suggested, young smokers usually view the problems associated with smoking cigarettes with aging.
Cigarette smoking is prevalent throughout the world, despite a broad range of adverse effects on the society, public health, environment, and economy. Many smokers continue to smoke despite being aware of the cost to their health and finances. The easy access and availability along with the addiction to nicotine are the primary causes of tobacco use around the world. People continue to smoke because cigarettes are readily available and they can quickly acquire cigarettes despite an intention to quit. Although the addiction plays a vital role in the smoking persistence, the availability also prevents many people from stopping. Many cigarette smokers, especially young adults and casual smokers will quit their habit if the government prohibits the sale of cigarettes around the country. The prohibition of cigarettes will not only reduce the prevalence of smoking, but also prevent people from taking up the habit in the first place. The government should prohibit smoking cigarettes because it has several effects on the society, including the hazards to public health, addiction, secondhand smoke, environmental pollution, and personal economic loss.
A wide majority of cigarette use begins in young childhood and teenage years. 88% of adults who smoke daily, say that they started smoking by the age of 18. Over the years, especially now social influences such as celebrities speak louder than ever to people, teens especially. Seeing their favorite celebrities at the same age if not older or younger, smoking, sets a bad example. Including seeing thing from ads in magazines to posts on social media, even to actors/actresses smoking in our favorite movies. All this gives us the idea that smoking is attractive or cool and taking part is the only way you’ll fit in. Fitting in even in the year of 2017 is important to 15-18 year olds all over the world, several of us would be willing to do just about anything to be like the cool kids in the movies that
One thing that smoking affects that a lot of people do not think about is how it affects the people around the smoker, not only in a physical way but emotionally also. According to a study, kids whose parents smoke are three times more likely to smoke when they get older. If smokers have kids, smoking around them increases their risk of having ear infections, asthma and other breathing problems that include coughs, shortness of breath, and even bronchitis. It’s not just children that are at risk of lung and heart problems, it’s every person around a smoker that are put at risk due to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds of them being toxic and 70 have shown to cause cancer in humans. Breathing in secondhand smoke has been shown to have instant effects on the cardiovascular system of nearby individuals, whether it’s from a neighbor’s burning cigarette or from a cigarette outside your window. Over time, it takes a toll on people’s lungs and has been found to increase the risk of having a stroke by 20-30% (Quitterscircle). Smoking also has an impact on pets and animals. Exposure to secondhand smoke for dogs increases the risk of them getting lung cancer and nasal cancer, especially long nosed dogs like greyhounds. Cats that are exposed to secondhand smoke are more than three times as likely to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. They may also suffer from asthma or lung cancer. Secondhand smoke can also affect the eyesight of birds and cause respiratory
The most unfortunate thing of our society is people are being judged by their drinking and smoking habit which should only be a choice of that person who is using it for whatever reason. Now if a woman smokes up, first of all her character would suddenly be misinterpreted, then if she drinks alcohol, it is almost catastrophic for her health according to the mentality and lack of knowledge of people in our society; not only that, in India smoking and drinking publically for women is a bizarre, it seems as she has made some crime. Of course smoking causes many diseases it’s a different issue but it can’t define woman’s personality or her nature.
We all know that as we age, it is impossible to turn back the clock unless we turn to botox or cosmetic surgery to reclaim our youthful looks. But think again, it is possible to stop time without having to go under the knife and at the same time keeping your bank balance healthy.
Smoking is a very serious health concern. Smoking is linked to many deaths and diseases. I know firsthand how true that statement is. I had a grandmother who passed away at the tender age of fifty-two, due to smoking. She started smoking when she was nineteen. Back in those days, the effects of smoking were not well known, and by the time they were, she was already addicted. For years she suffered from emphysema; a lung condition that causes shortness of breath. Then in January 2013 she found out she had stage three lung cancer. Despite the devastating news, she continued to smoke. Within six months the cancer had spread to her brain and she died. Because of her dangerous addiction to smoking; she left behind four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Smoking has far reaching effects on your life and the lives of others around and being able to quit this habit can allow you to live a more active life free of the desire to smoke. Smoking cigarettes are an addictive habit that is caused from a chemical that is in the tobacco called nicotine.
