Pollution has always been a major problem around the world. One of the most detrimental and harmful types of pollution is water pollution. Most people blow it off and do not really think of how dangerous water pollution really is. Some still do not believe that water pollution is a serious problem because of how big the oceans are. They believe that because the world is mostly oceans, there is no way we can run out good, clean water. Arvind Kumar, a member of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, states in his book, Biomonitoring of Sewage Pollution, that “The belief that aquatic resources which cover about 70% of the total surface of the globe will never become extinct and will support the ever increasing demophoric growth is becoming paradoxical and ‘malthusian pessimism’ still prevails in the world” (1). As the population continues to grow, so will the demand for more food and water. Over time, the water will become so polluted in all bodies of water from streams, lakes, and oceans, that even running it through purifiers may not make it safe enough to drink. Drinking and swimming in polluted water is dangerous and can have harmful side effects. Water pollution is not only harmful to humans, but to the aquatic ecosystems and the animals that surround and live in them in both, fresh and salt water ecosystems. There are many causes of water pollution, but the two main causes of water pollution are wastewater and plastic pollution. In order to save the water getting
Water is probably the most important resource we as people have. Humans can survive without food for several weeks, but without water we would die in less than a week. On a slightly less dramatic note, millions of liters of water are needed every day worldwide for washing, irrigating crops, and cooling industrial processes, not to mention leisure industries such as swimming pools and water-sports centers. Despite our dependence on water, we use it as a dumping ground for all sorts of waste, and do very little to protect the water supplies we have.
When we talk about how water is being polluted we just justify ourselves saying that there is a lot of water in this world and that a little bit of it getting damaged doesn’t matter at all. To understand the consequences of water pollution we first have to know what water pollution is and how it happens. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies like lakes, rivers and oceans. This form of environmental degradation occurs “when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds” (“Wikipedia”). Chemical waste from factories is sometimes dumped into rivers and lakes. These chemical
Water is a natural resource that many of us take for granted. We all use as much water as we desire because we do not have a limit as to how much water we can use on a daily basis. Most of us are never concerned whether if we will have sufficient water for the very next day. The water we use to consume, shower and even use for various things come from rivers, lakes, streams and oceans and it is absolutely important in the way our world functions. Unfortunately, we have done very little to maintain these water resources fresh clean and as a result, the rivers, lakes, streams and oceans have been undergoing pollution. Water pollution is occurring all over the world and not many of us are informed that every single oil spill, discarded water
What is Water pollution? Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies. Water pollution occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution affects plants and other living things. (http://www.nrdc.org/water/). Did you know that around 70% of waste is poured or dumped into many bodies of water and therefore no usable to humans nor animals. Why are we using the waterways as our trash can? In this paper I want to discuss the different ways people pollute our Coastal Waterways and the extreme effects that it has on not only humans by a chain of food supply to other species.
There are two types of pollutions that can occur there are primary that is caused from a known source and secondary is formed with primary pollutants which are mostly from a chemical reaction. When the most important object that humans need to survive like water is polluted no one is able to drink from it because the outcome will be your loves ones attending your funeral. Five thousand people die from polluted water everyday. An important fact is that sewage and industrial waste from unsuccessful experiments or the unwanted garbage is being dumped in U.S waters. The world uses water for bathing, drinking, swimming, and other fun activities. Who would want to let their children play with polluted water. With industries sterilizing the water
Have you ever wondered that if the water you are consuming is safe or not? City water is treated ,but only 2% is for in home use. The water does meet the EPA standards. The other 98% of the water is for industrial use etc. Some people doubt the water is safe because of the old pipes. The water has to travel through the pipes that was installed so long ago nobody remembers when.
Unfortunately we as humans are contaminating the water supplies all around us every single day. Water becomes contaminated when anthropogenic, or people-made, substances get dissolved or mixed into water. This results in an overabundance of deadly contaminants in the water, which have a direct effect on the animals that live in it. Some of these contaminations are extremely difficult, or even impossible, to clean up. Although huge oil spills, such as the BP oil spill, get a majority of the news coverage, there are many different ways people pollute the earth. These various ways include landfills, leaking gasoline storage or septic tanks, and even farm land that is treated with pesticides. A lot of these contamination methods are poorly researched,
Water pollution effects are not always immediate. We as human beings continue to pollute water in ignorance or knowingly that it will affect us in the long run. More than two thirds of the overall population of the earth is occupied by water bodies and the rest human beings. This shows the great extent on the importance of keeping water bodies clean. Water pollution eventually has led to decline in quality of water, causing problems for human beings and animals. In other words, polluted water poses a threat to human beings and animals. Unfortunately, we as human beings have played a big role in water pollution. Water
Pollution comes in many forms. In the ocean we dump a variety of substances, including human wastes, chemicals from fertilizers, oil, and trash such as plastic which all contribute to the growing issue of our ocean pollution. In addition to, our usable waters are finite. More than 97.5 percent of the water on this planet is undrinkable salt water; the remaining 2.5 percent has two-thirds of the usable fresh water locked up in glaciers, snow, and permafrost. Of the one-third of freshwater that is available for human use, 20 percent is used for industrial use. (“Water Pollution”) “In effect, water pollution reduces the volume of water available for use by human and other populations.” (Robin Clarke, Jannet King) Knowing that there are approximately 7.2 billion people and growing on this planet with only 0.83 percent of available for our use wouldn’t you want to do everything possible to help put an end to water pollution? (worldometers)
There are many problems throughout the world, with there being starvation, war, struggles for oil.Imagine how bad these issues would be if they were in your neighborhood. The effects would be catastrophic but one major issue that most americans don 't realize and have been spoiled to never being without is Clean Water. Water is a major concern all around the world but here in america we have rarely experienced any type of serious water shortages. Just because america has never had any problem such as lack of clean drinkable water doesn 't mean it won 't happen in the future. We are rapidly using all of our freshwater and with a fast growing population the effects can be seen by just looking at our Great Lakes and even at Hoover Dam. Water
Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary biology, states in his theory of evolution that only organisms better fit to survive in their environment will survive. Based on his theory and research, it can be concluded that challenges to the environment directly affect the organisms. Research shows that in particular water pollution; hospital wastewater and sewage wastewater, is shown to cause antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus as well as heavy metals that harm the aquatic life present in the body of water. Antibiotic-resistant microorganisms refer to organisms that cannot be killed by antibiotics such as penicillin or ampicillin. The heavy metals referred to are, mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), thallium (Tl), and lead (Pb); these metals mainly impact fish.
Water is an essential part of our everyday lives. We use it various activities, including; watering our yards, washing clothes dishes and cars, bathing ourselves and our pets, preparing food, and most importantly drinking. Our bodies are approximately sixty percent water. In order to survive, we need to drink plenty of water everyday to insure we do not get dehydrated. Without drinkable water, we would be sentenced to inevitable death. However, despite this, water pollution is one of the most common, and serious, ecological threats we face in today's world. It is important to be aware of the causes, effects, and dangers of water pollution. It is important to be educated on how we can help prevent water pollution as well.
Among all natural resource, water is one of the most important to sustain the living planet, earth and every form of life on its face, including human being. It is an integral part of human’s activities including domestic, agriculture, transport, industry, power generation and recreation. Moreover, the normal uses of human body depends entirely on adequate quantity and quality of water. But pure water does not exist by default in its quality due to natural interaction among the earth’s subsystems, especially anthropogenic activity around urban area .
Water pollution is a major global problem which is the pollution of seas, lakes, rivers, swamps… The pollution is made of storm and rainwater, sewage water and industrial waste. In developing countries, 70% of the waste dumped into waters are coming from industries. More than 80% of sewage from sewage treatment plants pollutes rivers and lakes without being treated first. 43% of America's rivers and lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life. 1.2 trillion gallons of sewage water and industrial waste are released into US waters every year. Water pollution can also be in the form of solid waste.
70 % of our Earth surface is covered by water and almost 60% of the human body contain water for nutrient transportation. The unique characteristic of water is water molecule is the only substance in this Earth that exist in all three physical states of matter which are solid, liquid and gas. All human beings need water to survive. The national development over the years cause the rate of water pollution increased. According to Gebre & Rooijen (2009) water pollution can be considered as a sign that derives from economic growth and is a common phenomenon in urbanized cities in developing countries. In general, there are three main issues that related to water pollution which are the causes, effects and the way to decrease this problem.
