Slaying demons, fighting dragons. Just an ordinary life for a hero—a hero named Beowulf. Beowulf is known for battling massive and terrifying beasts with unwavering confidence. Many attribute his success to his courage and determination, but it also leads him to his untimely demise. Maybe his confidence is not an asset, but a tragic flaw, a vulnerability.
A hero can be defined in several ways. Someone can be considered a hero by the qualities he or she displays. The epic poem Beowulf, written by an unknown author, describes the most heroic man and role model of the Anglo-Saxon times. This hero Beowulf has all the qualities and traits that a true hero expresses. Beowulf, as depicted in the epic Beowulf, is the prototype of the epic hero, a larger-than-life figure who embodies the virtues and ideals of his culture.
In the epic hero poem, Beowulf, the main character Beowulf, is a prideful, boastful and extremely strong individual. He is faced with a few tasks during the course of the poem; the first of which is fighting and killing an evil, dangerous and disgusting creature, named Grendel, which terrorized the town of Herot. Soon after that, Grendel’s devious mother “the she-wolf,” attacks Beowulf and the town forcing Beowulf to fight her off as well. After the mother-son duo, Beowulf is then faced with the biggest task of his existence, both literally and figuratively. During each of these battles Beowulf fights and kills these creatures in different ways with different weapons and different tactics. He also changes during each fight, and at the end of the poem is quit a different man. How does he manage to fight each creature off and what kind of tactics did he use? Well that’s a great question, let me elaborate.
If you have ever found yourself captivated by a novel, or whisked away following a journey, you have most likely read an epic. An epic by definition is “a long poem, typically one derived from ancient oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures or the history of a nation”. Every epic has a main character that undergoes the same archetypal journey as all other heroes, an epic hero. There are specific qualities one must have to be considered an epic hero. Each epic hero possesses superhuman strength, displays a strong sense of leadership, and reflects their culture in a positive, admirable manner.

“The whole earth is the tomb of heroic men and their story is not given only on stone over their clay but abides everywhere without visible symbol woven into the stuff of other men’s lives,” said Perculus (PR). You’re born, you live a little, and then you die. There is no simpler way to sum up life. Often times this is done through oral tales, paintings, and various other ways. For those whose lives were truly something great, something memorable, their stories are transcripted into writings. Whether these are simple biographies or symbolic fictional works, stories are often based on someone greater than the writer. These “epic heros” are protagonists that fulfill their potential of greatness through using their bravery, strength and
When discussing epic heroes, some of the more prominent ones that come to mind are Beowulf (from Beowulf), Hektor (from The Iliad), and Achilleus (also from The Iliad). These are all characters from literature who have displayed a multitude of the characteristics embodied in epic heroes. Each one of these literary figures has exhibited necessary traits needed to be considered an epic hero. Whether those traits are some of the common ones such as strength, honor, loyalty, perseverance, and bravery, or some of their own such as pride, intelligence, and morality. Whatever the case, these three have undergone difficulties and shown ties to the values held by their cultures within how they deal with issues. In this essay, I will attempt to
Beowulf, an epic hero who defeated monsters that plagued the land. He never shied away from a fight and always fought with honor and pride. For over 50 years he ruled facing any challenge that came his way. Beowulf's final obstacle would cause his demise. Beowulf certainly faced many challenges but his battle between the dragon, no doubt was his hardest.
Hero is a term that is very over used in modern-day society. People often use the word to describe someone who has simply helped another person out without risking anything himself. However, though these people do deserve to be praised, they are not real heroes. Beowulf, on the other hand, frequently displays all the qualities that a hero should have and is absolutely deserving of that title. Beowulf is an exemplary archetypal epic hero because he is very ethical, is a strong and responsible leader, and demonstrates superior strength, intelligence, and courage.
Beowulf is the epic poem that tells the story of a warrior and his heroic adventures. In the story, Beowulf is hailed a hero after defeating Grendel and his mother. Despite being presented as one, Beowulf is not a hero by today’s standards. Beowulf is too conceited to be considered a hero. A modern day hero is someone who is selfless and helps others for nothing in return.
The tale of Beowulf is a compelling story about a man that travels overseas to help a king Hrothgar and his kingdom under the tyranny of a demon from the seed of Cain in the bible. Beowulf then slays the demon, keeping his arm as a reward. His mother, sneaks in and steals that arm in revenge, beowulf and his warriors find her in a swamp and they fight. He then kills her and returns back to the land as a hero. He becomes king and rules for 50 years, after this he last battle is with the dragon. He kills the dragon but then is wounded and dies. Whether or not Beowulf is considered a hero will be answered through the analyzation of how he was viewed by others, what Beowulf’s intentions were, and how he saw himself. View by others According

Brodi Ashton wrote, “Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with.” Beowulf is the oldest surviving poem written by an unknown author. It follows an epic hero named Beowulf that protects its people while emphasising the culture in Anglo Saxon. It shows their views on what an epic hero should be like and what their values are. The text reveals how a hero should not just be strong, but be brave and selfless, which will eventually unify their people. While these are all independent cultural and societal values, they work together to reflect a culture that puts a great deal of emphasis on Beowulf. Beowulf was the one with all of the components needed to be a hero. Beowulf is a hero who embodies the ideal characteristics
What is it that makes a hero of legend extraordinary? Many classic genres have explored the archetype of the hero, with the epic poem being the most distinguished. Beowulf was an epic first orated by the Anglo-Saxons, who told the poem via the scops-- or reciters-- for their community entertainment. The plot follows the brave Geat, Beowulf, as he conquers various terrifying monsters in his land. He receives honors for his contributions, which eventually earns him a high status before the falling action. The poem Beowulf stands as one of the most popular contributions to the epic genre, where the protagonist, Beowulf, summarizes the definition of an epic hero that advances the plot and experiences change.
In a society of average performing conformists, an outgoing savior is strived for. A true hero is scarce to come by because to become a true hero, everyone must believe the person is benevolent. However, very few people in the world tend to agree on any given topic. These people have their own personal heroes, a title granted to a local whom they personally admire. In theory, this means heroes are everywhere. However, evolving from personal beliefs, monsters and heroes exist only in imagination. In the epic poem, Beowulf, it speaks of an epic hero who saves the world from gruesome monsters. In the eyes of the people, Beowulf is their hero, yet in the eyes of others, Beowulf is the monster. The sharp contrast between a personal hero and a true hero is shown in the poem. Due to the fact that heros and villians are subjective to individuals, they have yet to exist in modern day as a whole except under the delusional view of one person.
