Beowulf’s triumphs are short lived due to another attack on Herot. This time, Grendel’s mother comes to the great mead hall to avenge her son. The battle between Grendel’s mother and Beowulf differs greatly from the previous battle with the beast’s son. After another attack, Beowulf now must seek out his new enemy, and fight her on her own turf. As it stood, the scores were even between the monsters and the Danes, but Beowulf now looked for victory over the monsters, not revenge. Beowulf also had to regain his reputation. He had just won a trophy, when the bigger, badder bully came up to him and took it straight from his grasp. Now Beowulf traveled to the burning lake, which proved a test of its own. He then swam to the bottom of the lake where the monster resided. All of this just to get to the monster shows that this brave hero would do anything to set the scores right for his people and for the glory that came with it.

Before Beowulf could defeat the monster however, Unferth, Ecglaf’s son, challenges Beowulf's skills out of jealously. Unferth asks Beowulf how he could be such a boastful warrior, if he was the same man who almost died at sea in a swimming match with
When I first began reading Beowulf, it was difficult at first to keep track of everyone names but, as time went along I was able to manage okay. The footnotes at the bottom were also helpful in remembering which person was related to which and the historical references helped put things into context. I was sad when King Hrothgar knew that he wouldn’t see Beowulf again (1875) because Hrothgar already had one foot in the grave and it made me realize how easy we have it now to travel when way back then it was an arduous journey. I also found it interesting on the depictions that they had of the women in this poem. I remember in our previous discussion how Queen Wealhtheow and Grendel’s Mother were portrayed as opposites of one another. Again,
A monster named Grendel threatens the life of the Danes. He would go to Herot (mead hall of the Danes) and would gorge on all of the bodies. He would kill all of these men for years. Then Beowulf (Higlac's nephew), hears about what has happened in the land of the Danes. Beowulf then sets off to the land of the Geats by boat, but taking the best of the best men with him to fight Grendel.
