Christina Gella American History February 2, 2016 Written by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner the Gilded Age is a classic, historical fiction book, The time period of the book is in the years that followed after the Civil War. In the beginning of the book, Squire Hawkins of Obedstown, receives a letter from Colonel Beriah Sellers asking Hawkins to come to Missouri with his wife, Nancy, and their two children, Emily and Washington. They set off to Missouri and before they board a boat they come across a house where a boy's mother had died and offer to take in the orphaned child. Now with the new boy Clay, they continue on their journey and board a steamboat called the Boreas, but while on the steamboat the boat encounters another steamboat called the Amaranth and a mad race begins. In the end the Amaranth becomes beaten up pretty bad and the Boreas goes to get all the wounded and hurt out of the boat. The Hawkins family find a small girl named Laura who can’t find her parents, they are assumed to be dead and she is taken in with the Hawkins family along their own Children Washington, Emily and Clay. We then meet Philip Sterling and Henry Brierly, who both set out to St. Joseph in Missouri to work as construction engineers for a railroad operation. They meet Col.
