Fear in Journey's End The definition of ‘fear’ is a feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by the presence or imminence of danger. ‘Fear’ is reflected by the continual tension throughout the play. All the characters deal with fear in their own different ways. This reflects their personality and gives us an outline of how they really deal with the troubles, which arise during their experiences in a dangerous surrounding, and also, by dealing with the outcomes that they have to face in life.

Have you ever been scared, or been filled with fear? If you haven’t, then you are one lucky human being. Some people might ask “What exactly is fear?” Well fear is an emotion that is unpleasant that no one wants to feel. Fear makes you feel threaten, also sometimes you feel frantic. But sometimes people feel over flown with fear and makes us scared. When people feel darkness, the unknown and scared our imagination will overflow with fear.

What does responsibility mean? According to Dictionary.com, responsibility means the state of being answerable, or accountable for something. In the short story The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, focuses on a young child named Doodle, who is born with health conditions, and his brother, the narrator. Doodle’s brother is responsible for him because he decides to help Doodle so he could do the same thing young boys his age were able to do before school starts. This story shows the importance of family and how you don't know what you have until it's gone. Doodle’s brother wants to have a normal brother so badly that he was willing to do anything to train and help him. Even though that meant pushing Doodle too hard.

Most kids would think about the “what if’s” instead of about thinking what you need to do. So, all of the aforementioned examples explain why one of Brian’s main character traits is responsibility.

Another way in how human nature is best defined as fear, is shown in the story, “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. For example, Poe speaks about how individuals can feel fear after losing someone special. In this case, fear can make us not believe in the goodwill of other individuals. We can infer that fear is often involved with people who suffer depression most of the time. At one point, his use of internal rhyme makes the readers question why the the narrator feels a sense of fear when the curtains start to flutter. The author says, “ And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain thrilled me and filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before” (Poe 10). From the words, “thrilled me” we can infer that the speaker is frightened

The fear responses arise from the perception of danger and ultimately a change in behaviour, such as fleeing, or hiding or from perceived traumatic events. Every person has fears and different fears may be different adaptations that have been useful in our evolutionary past. I have fears too, and sometime, I feel embarrassed to intersperse my fear with others.

The definition of intelligence has strongly been debated over for many centuries, and many individuals have their arguments for what it is. So what is really the true meaning of intelligence? Some, such as college professor of psychology, Carol S. Dweck, strongly believes that intelligence is something achieved through large amounts effort and having optimistic mindsets as inferred in her article, “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids”. However, on the other hand, successful author of best selling novel “Steve Jobs”, Walter Isaacson, claims that intelligence is an abstract idea that is derived from ingenuity and applying creativity to life and other material concepts. With almost completely opposite sets of beliefs, it is likely that Dweck will not agree with Isaacson’s nation of intelligence being derived from natural intuition rather than raw intelligence.

Fear is the feeling of being scared or afraid, or does it mean more? Fear can change someone and make them into a different person. In the book, Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson (2000), shows how fear can change the lives of people. The story is about a 14 year old girl Mattie, who lives in Philadelphia when the devastating yellow fever epidemic of 1793 hits the nation’s capitol. Soon the fever hits her home and Mattie has to leave, enduring many frightening adventures trying to survive. This story illustrates when people are afraid, their fear and sadness can make them lose their sense of identity.

The word ‘intelligent,’ or some form of it, is used throughout much of the story. Madeleine valued and embraced her own intelligence and that of others, while Mado is not even capable of coherent thought or speech. Mado’s inability to hold even a simple conversation with anyone only emphasizes the one-sidedness of James and Madeleine’s current relationship. The word ‘intelligent’ also serves as a form of irony in the story by showing the differences between Madeleine and Mado. Madeleine was a teacher before WWII, while during and after the war she worked in the aptly named intelligence department. Mado, on the other hand, finds enjoyment in fantastical television shows that were created for children.

Our first assignment, “Have I Got a Story for You”, seemed similar to something we would write in English five. The basic concept of this essay was to write about a personal issue that we experienced at some point in our life. Since this topic was based around a personal experience, I didn't have too much trouble writing about my topic. I found that this assignment helped me release some stress that I had held on to and worked as a great outlet. When it came to picking a topic, I was determined to pick one that I felt passionate about and one that had truly affected my life. In the end, I decided to write about anxiety. Both Carol S. Dweck and Annie Murphy Paul use the term intelligence in their essays, but they have slightly different meanings. While Carol S. Dweck uses the term intelligence as a measure of how smart someone is that can be expanded through effort, while Annie Murphy Paul uses intelligence in the same manner (a measure of how smart someone is), but in how it can be suppressed.

Gottfredson, (1997) stated that intelligence is ‘a very general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience.

According to my dictionary, Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. When the word "fear" comes to my mind, I think of an emotion that's caused by a bad situation. There are many things in this world that put fear in me. My greatest fears are computer viruses, thugs, sick people, and clowns. Each of these fears make me very scared and give me goosebumps.
