Fiction Report
The book that I'm reading for this fiction report is The Giver, Originally published in 1993, and it is written by Louis Lowry.
The characters in this book are, the main character Jonas. A description of Jonas is "But we feel certain that you are brave," (64). Other characters in this book are The Giver who trains Jonas to become the receiver, and gives him his memories. Asher who is Jonas's best friend. Gabriel who is a baby that Jonas's family is trying to protect so that he doesn't get released. Jonas's dad who is a nurturer in the community, and Fiona who is Jonas's other best friend, and somewhat of a love interest in the novel.
The main setting is in Jonas's community, and it's set in the future. The narrative point of view is third person-limited in Jonas's point of view.
The three themes and issues in this novel are very important. One of the themes or issues is memory. This theme is present in the novel when Jonas is given memories from the Giver, and he realizes people are nothing without memory. Once those memories and emotions are taken away those people are just drones who work. This is also present in the novel when Jonas is given

This theme is present in this novel because once Jonas got memories from The Giver he realized his life isn't perfect. Once he saw the dark secrets of the community Jonas realized that the community was quite the opposite of perfect once he got memories from the Giver. Once Jonas realized his community isn't perfect, and that the people in his community have no emotions or memory because the elders decided that the people didn't need memories. Jonas decided to rebel against the elders, and leave the community. As he is the receiver who has all the memories and emotions of the community, once he leaves the community his memories gets transferred onto the people of the community. So he rebelled against the authority and gave the people of his community
The Giver, a book written by Lois Lowry. It is about a young boy named Jonas in a community without war, fear, and pain. He is selected to be the new receiver of memory when he turns twelve years old, which is the most honorable job in the community. To be the receiver of memory requires intelligence, integrity, and courage. This job makes his life changes throughout the novel. To begin with, in the beginning of the story, Jonas is committed, obedient, and eager. During the middle of the story, he is brave, curious, and imaginative. Finally, at the end of the story, He is courageous, rebellious and, strong.
At the start of the story Jonas is feeling nervous about the ceremony of twelve's, where the children are given their assignment. This is where for the first time in the children's life, they will be doing something different then every other person in the community. Jonas is given the very special occupation, which isn’t really an occupation at all, of Receiver of Memory. He is the only one that can have memories of what life was like before sameness. The memories are given to him by The Giver, who was the current Receiver of Memory. The Giver must transmit all memories of history (the good,
No memories! Nobody in Jonas’ community has memories. Thanks to the receiver. The receiver is there to store the memories of the community so there is nothing but peace. It’s believed that memories were dangerous and would cause conflict or create something opposite of their so called “utopia”.
Jonas is helping his family take care of a problem newborn. His name is Gabriel, he had problems sleeping at the Nurturing Center. Jonas helps Gabriel sleep by transmitting memories to Gabriel. They become really close. Jonas finds out that Gabriel is in danger of being released. He talks to The Giver and finds out that release means the same thing as death. Jonas gets really mad knowing that his father killed the babies. That was his father’s job. Jonas wants to create a plan to change the community forever.
Kaitlyn Jarrett Ms. Davis World Literature 5 February 29, 2016 The Giver book report The Giver The book The Giver written by Lois Lowry is a novel that takes place in a dystopian society. The story takes place sometime in the future, but the exact time is not specified in the novel.
In The Giver, the author uses tradition, emotion, and deception to develop the theme that memories are significant to human life. The theme of The Giver is shown through the use of tradition. In the community the tellings at an elderly release ceremony are performed. When the elderly are released, a telling of their life and work is performed.
During the story Jonas grew as a person through bravery, love, and risks. The love that Jonas had made him braver and he took more risks. Now think, would would you actually want to live in this community where everything and everyone was the same every day. The lesson of this story was without memories, knowledge is
“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” (p.193) This quote from the story, The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Giver explains how the memories should be shared, not held by a single person. All the memories from the past are held by the receiver. He believes the community should have these memories and keep them.
His friend Fiona is adapted to be a love interest for Jonas and assists him with his and Gabe’s escape. The main characters in “The Giver” are Larissa an elderly woman who lives in the house of the old. Jonas bathes her when he volunteers at the house of the old. The Chief Elder is the leader of the community who is newly elected every ten
Jonas’s world is not so splendid to people, although it's perfect to him. Everyone is the same, they dress the same, there personality is the same and they don't have many memories of the past. There world or ,community, is very plain to some people. They have releases which are frightening which would never happen in our world, but in their world is perfect to them. In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas learns that without memories your knowledge is useless, that those who do not feel sorrow cannot know joy, and that those who never take risks never grow.
It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” (Lowry 154). As a result of the isolation in the society, Jonas and The Giver live a life of non-sharing. Hence the quote above, Jonas describes what it is like to be The Receiver of memory. Being chosen in the Ceremony of Twelve as The Receiver sets Jonas up for a long future of misery but also joy in the end.
Francis Bacon once said, "Knowledge is power". One of the main topics in this novel is how Jonas, the main character, receives these memories that came from the past. The community is the place that Jonas lives in. In this community everything that was generations back was taken away, Jonas & the Giver are the only ones who have the memories of the past. Once he receives these thoughts it impacts his life.
The Giver is a young-adult novel written by the American writer Lois Lowry. The main character is Jonas, a 12 year old boy who lives in an isolated city’s society known as the Community where everyone who lives there have an assigned and unique role. With the annual Ceremony of Twelve upcoming, Jonas is nervous because is when he is going to receive his life’s assignment. The Ceremony of Twelve takes place each year in December. He tries to find comfort in his father a Nurturer (that cares about the new babies who are naturally planned and so Jonas’s parents are not physically related to him) and his mother an official in Department of Justice who assign the children their careers that are always right. The day finally arrives and Jonas is
I think the theme is what is told to be perfect, or is seen as perfect may not be. In the Giver people are born the same and and with no color, so they don’t know anything different than what they are born into. They think it’s a “perfect” world when if they spent a day in our world they would never leave. If I was born the same as my neighbor I would know nothing different than that, but when Jonas got his memory’s from the give it became clear to use the theme. We finally realize this not a perfect society they live in. He
