The Giver
The Giver is a novel written by Lois Lowery and published in 1993. It is set in a utopian society that promotes sameness and formality. The novel is focused on Jonas, who is a young member of the society. When he reaches the age of twelve he is assigned the task of the Receiver of Memory. His mentor is known as the Giver, he possesses all of the memories of the past. While the Giver’s task is to pass on the memories it is up to Jonas to interpret how they intertwine with his society. Jonas must stop wondering why he has been chosen for such a position and figure out how to navigate the knowledge that is being given to him.
Jonas lives in a society where each member of the society is required to act, speak and dress in an identical manner. All emotions and color have been stripped from the society so that there is no war, no pain and no prejudice. Everyone is required to dress the same, speak in a clear concise pattern. All families are identical, including a father, a mother and two children, the children are not

Gabriel and Jonas become very close due to the fact that he has trouble sleeping through the night and Jonas begins to give him tranquil memories to sooth him to sleep. The begin to form a bond that Jonas hasn’t be allowed to share with anyone else in the community. When Jonas and his family are informed that Gabriel is going to be released from the community Jonas runs to the Giver for guidance. The Giver then shows Jonas what the ceremony of release looks like. When a member of society is selected for release they are injected with a serum that kills them, but since the community members don’t know what death is they have no idea that they are killing another living life. This fact pushes Jonas over the
The book “The Giver” was written by Lois Lowry in 1993. The book is about a community where there is no disease or penury, but you get little individual choice. The community is basically the perfect world, no war, drama, etc. In the excerpt from StudySync, Jonas expresses his concerns about his soon to be assigned career path to his parents.
Jonas, after the Ceremony, now realizes that he will be different then the rest of his friends, “Now, for the first time in his twelve years of life, Jonas felt separate, different.”(62) Jonas now is different then other kids. He realizes that his assignment has different requirements than the other children. He also learns he has the power of “seeing beyond”. Jonas saw Jonas and his friends playing a game of war , and then realized, “In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying on the field and had begged him for water.”(126) Jonas, with the memory of war, understands that the game war is the same as the memory of the boy who was lying on the ground dying. He realizes that things that seemed harmless, now seem so scary and sad. Also, when Jonas and the Giver first meet each other and start talking about different things and the Giver says this,“Jonas, you and I are the only ones who have feelings.”(144-145) It's easy to think that being different or thinking differently is ok, but when you look at the facts, Jonas and the Giver have no one to share how they feel with, or what they are experiencing in the training. The Giver says that he and Jonas are the only ones who will feel feelings. In the community everything is perfect there is no wrong and no differences. Jonas will feel different about life because he will have memories of imperfect

Jonas lives with his parents and one sister. His parents were allowed to have only two children, a boy and a girl. It was one of the many community rules that couldn’t be broken.
Jonas starts out with a very low understanding of what it means to be mature. He has no knowledge of pain, love, or any other emotion. He proves this by acting like a normal child. He plays with his friends after volunteer hours. He attends school on a regular basis. Jonas is a stickler for the rules. He has been told that it is wrong to not follow rules and that there
The Community and Elsewhere are two extremely different places. Jonas might yearn for a reminder of his old home, old friends, and especially the Giver. Bringing Gabriel with him on the escape solved the possible feeling of longing; Gabriel would be the one to remind him of his old home. Without Gabriel, Jonas would consider returning to the Community, just to see some people that never really knew him and never really remembered him. Gabriel would grow up knowing him and would love Jonas wholeheartedly. By saving Gabriel, Jonas also saved himself a best friend.
They automatically say, “precision of language”, and tell him that the word had no meaning in their society. His parents told him that they enjoyed and took pride in his accomplishments, but that wasn't what Jonas had wanted to hear. One night Jonas goes into Lily’s room because he hears Gabriel crying. Jonas realizes that he can transmit memories from himself to Gabriel, which calms Gabriel down. But this newfound ability leads Jonas into watching his father release another child, which infuriates Jonas. But with the help of the Giver, they form a plan, and when the news breaks that Gabriel is to be released, they start the plan. Jonas takes Gabe and escapes from the Community towards Elsewhere. As he goes, his memories begin to fade as they are released back to the commune. As they run, they experience weather for the first time, and also see wildlife. As they rush to Elsewhere, however, the weather turns against them. Freezing conditions prevent them from moving quickly and they acquire hypothermia. But all alone, the individuals finally reach the apex of a hill. Then, Jonas hears music for the first time and rushes down the snowy mountain on the sled from the memory to Elsewhere, and
Through our society we are all raised up to be independent and unique individuals such as being ourselves and expressing who each of us are to the world. However, in the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, everyone is raised to count on one another and everyone must look and act the same. Our society differs from Jonas’s in many ways, such as the family units, birthdays, and the way we each learn about our past.
The characters are Johnas who was the novel's protagonist, he is an intelligent and courageous boy with the Capacity to See Beyond. Gabriel who becomes a lively, inquisitive toddler, and Jonas discovers that he is also able to receive memories. The Giver took more years than Jonas to realize the necessity for action and change in their society, and by the end of the novel, his experiences with Jonas cause him to realize that he can help
Lois Lowry’s The Giver is a novel that showed how Jonas was saving everyone's lives by not quitting after painful memories that he receives from the
In chapter 18 Jonas asks the Giver “ Do you ever think about the release ?’’ which got him even more curious about the true meaning. When Jonas becomes aware of what release actually means he gets into conflict with what his father does. His disturbed reaction to when his father its “releasing’’ a twin, which was very dramatic, “ he killed it! My father killed it!’’ Later in chapter 18, the Givers explain to Jonas about Rosemary and how she became an individual because of the emotions she was receiving, but the community didn’t allow anyone to have feelings. Because of the impact of the emotions she has received, she wanted to be released, which lead her to not conforming her society. What this tells us is that communities are made up of authoritarian rules that have impacts on
It creates chaos, as Jonas understands, and thoughtfully supports it. The government sees a utopia, a safe haven from all the bad things the people before them witnessed in the real world. Although later in the story, Jonas begins to realize that they should still know what bad/good things they can experience with the memories. He starts to think it’s unfair that they don’t know the truth of all the pain that has been experienced in the past, along with not being able to see things physically like the colors that only Jonas and the Giver can see. He then also agrees to the idea of freedom, and being able to choose what jobs they want to have, or who they want to spend the rest of their life with. This brings him to create a transgression, something he would have never thought of doing before he started training to be the Receiver. Run away with Gabriel away from the Community, to teach him real feelings and how he should feel about things from the start without any interruptions. When he was younger, he trusted how the government chose the decisions for him, so he wouldn’t mess up if he chooses for himself. After all the training, he realizes he wants to be the one to change something to be different from the rest, making his own decisions in his life that creates an unplanned path for
At the ceremony of twelve Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory the Giver, transfers the memory to Jonas through his back. Jonas is annoyed that the people in the community can not appreciate their life which the Giver feels the same way which starts a bond between them. Later when Jonas is trying to plot out his escape is told that Gabriel is going to be released in the morning. Jonas takes a bike and rides away with the new child, later it starts to snow and he climbs a hill where he finds a sled from his first memory that was transmitted and they slide down to the people waiting for them.
Jonas finds that taking risks can help people and those who play it safe don’t grow. An example of this is when Jonas noticed something strange about an apple and “had taken the apple home, against recreation area rules” (Lowry 31). When Jonas breaks the rule about taking things from the recreation
In the book The Giver, it tells the story of a perfect world. Everyone there is happy and feels no pain. As the story progresses, the society appears more and more dystopian as the main goal of the society is revealed, which is sameness.() The community is constantly observed and controlled by every aspect in their lives. The committee assigns jobs, housing, husbands, wives, and children. If found breaking any of these laws, people are “released”, an indirect term for murdering. When Jonas is 12 years old, he 's chosen to be the community 's Receiver of Memory. Once he enters into training with an old man called 'The Giver ', he begins to receive memories of the real world that the rest of the community is hidden from. As the giver begins to show Jonas the important memories, he learns not only of love and family, but also of pain, war, and all the unhappy
