Bang, Bang! The article I have chosen talks in-depth about the Second Amendment in the US Constitution as well as the steps you must go through before purchasing a gun here in the Untied States. The article, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: A 50-state survey exploring federal and state firearm regulations related to mental health, by Jason Sterzer, helps the readers to understand how if someone with a history of mental illnesses to purchase a gun in order to enact a mass murder, that there are governmental barriers inn place to help prevent the purchase of guns by these people, and promote the safety of innocent citizens, US or otherwise. I chose this article because I am a big fan of all things guns. I love going hunting, target shooting, and I even just love to look and admire the craftsmanship of the gun. I also chose this article because while I like to think I know everything there is …show more content…
I believe this would be an essential piece of information, because if you are sane in present day and purchase a gun, and then five or so years later you develop a mental illness and decide to commit a mass murder how is the government going to help to prevent that shooting. I would not like to think of a future in which this is even a possibility, but the sad reality of the situation is that this can and does happen to people. If this would have ever happen to me I would not want to have my guns taken away from me because I would feel as if this is a little part of me that is still young and healthy and full of life, is being taken away. If anything I would want to rebel from having my weapons taken, and try to get back at those who took them away from me, and if I already have a mental disorder I would not be thinking with a right mind and
Every day in America an average of 93 are killed people due to gun violence. One of the biggest concerns today in American policy is gun control. This is a very controversial and complicated topic for both pro-gun and anti-gun supporters. American policy makers need to make it harder for the wrong people to obtain firearms and the fact that Second Amendment and gun control can co-exist. Mental illness constantly emerges in relation to mass shootings and shooters a like, as well as day to day homicides and suicides. America doesn’t necessarily have more crime then other developed countries the crime is just much more lethal. Right-wing Republicans constantly use the Second Amendment as shield to use firearms, the fact is the document is
Another article looks at the Tucson shooting where six individuals were killed as an example (Kaveny, 2016). While the author agrees that the constitution protects the rights of gun owners, she makes the argument that semiautomatic weapons were not what the founding fathers had in mind though and that these type of weapons should not be allowed to be owned by the public (Kaveny, 2016). The author also believes that it would be beneficial to have to obtain a license to own firearms and to purchase insurance for possible damages along with further funding for mental health patients to help keep these mass shootings from happening again (Kaveny, 2016).
In America, the average amount of people shot per year is 100,000; over ten thousand defenseless people are murdered. The Second Amendment’s proclamation that “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” has been an extensive topic of debate. Moreover, the amendment has been one of many debates over the several years throughout America. The discussion of gun control is often debated as to whether or not it is morally right to legally bypass the Second Amendment to avoid unlawful uses of arms. The Second Amendment allows citizens to carry firearms specifically for protection, gun control hinders that right and places civilians’ lives in danger. In short, the U.S. government’s intrusive restrictions on gun laws prevent law-abiding citizens from defending themselves with firearms.
This study will define the primary misunderstanding of the Second Amendment that provides certain limited rights for individuals in terms of gun ownership. Traditionally, the Second Amendment defines the rights of gun ownership through a “well regulated militia”, which was ratified during the Revolutionary War era. This provision defines the specific aspect of gun ownership in terms of a state militia, and not necessarily for the individual. The Second Amendment has also been interpreted by the Supreme Court to have certain individual rights, which are defined in the provisions of District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). This case has served
Every year 30,000 americans die from guns while others have the privilege to end up with a disability rather than dieing. The men and women who are diagnosed with a mental illness and obtain guns often commit suicide and crimes such as mass shootings, and murders. Because healthcare providers don't report the mental illness’ of many people to the FBI these people are able to pass a background check when they attempt to purchase a gun. Although the second amendment allows people the right to bear arms, it has become easy for the mentally ill to acquire guns and gun control should be strengthened for this very reason.
The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution protects the rights of individuals, concerning the right to bear arms. Amendment II was adopted on December 15th, 1791. Gun rights and gun control groups alike have been lobbying Congress for decades to craft legislation in their respective favors. Twice in the past two years the gun issue has reached the nation’s highest court. In the 2008 Supreme Court case District of Columbia vs. Heller the court ruled that the Constitution protects an individual’s right to own a gun for personal use (Blocher, 816). Excavating the gun debate from the constitutional rubble may be a step in the right direction, as it could enable a more direct discussion of the proper role of gun rights and gun control in the United States, freeing from misunderstandings and misinterpretations of constitutional doctrine (Blocher, 815).
According to the Coalition for Gun Control, last year a total of 291 people were killed by handguns in Australia, Sweden, Great Britain, Japan, and Switzerland. In the United States more than 24,000 people will be killed by the end of this year. So what is the big difference between the U.S. and these other countries? In these other countries it nearly impossible to buy any kind of gun. In these countries there are no gun shows. In these countries you can’t buy a gun at a pawnshop or your local Wal-Mart. These countries have strict gun laws and are all about gun control. In this paper I will discus the correct interpretation of the Second Amendment, why guns are such a problem in the U.S., and why guns are more likely to kill a friend

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed " (US Const). Although written over two hundred years ago, the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is still indispensable today. With thousands of innocent Americans murdered from the use of a firearm every year, there is a strong calling for stricter gun-control laws and regulations. Yet, every day United States citizens are forced to use their firearms for protective purposes, frequently saving their lives. While firearms pose a threat when in the wrong hands, restricting their use to only law enforcement is not the answer to ending gun violence. Though the rights granted under the Second Amendment are imperative and must not be stripped away, there are measures that should be taken in order to prevent gun violence, including the expansion of more stringent and thorough background checks and the increase in mental health screening.
In the small town of Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, Adam Lanza, killed students and staff members. Lanza took twenty students and six adults’ lives during the massacre. Lanza also killed his mother in her bed before going to the elementary school. Police said, gunman took his own life. He took out a handgun and shot himself in a classroom as law enforcement officers started to approach him. “The US media diagnosed shooter, Adam Lanza, with schizophrenia in the days following the tragic school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School” (Metzel). If only the world would’ve known before the massive shooting that Lanza had mental issues it could’ve saved the students and teachers from getting killed. After the mass shooting, “with honor of the memory of twenty first graders and six teachers who were killed last year in Newtown, Connecticut—as well as ten thousand of others who killed by guns each year- by voting a number of measures to strengthen the law that prevent gun violence in this nation” (Zigmond). I believe that anyone that wants to buy a gun should have a doctor’s release saying they have no mental illnesses and background checks should be mandatory, even though they approximately take
In 2012 several mass shootings accrued which reignited gun-control and firearm ownership debates in the United States. There are more public mass shootings in the United States than in any other country in the world. Many of the shooters had a mental illness and most states do not require background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows from private individuals, which is known as the “gun show loophole”. This results in too many guns falling into the hands of dangerous people, which is why we need stricter regulations. Although many others think getting a stricter amendment on gun control violets our second amendment we still need to do something about this situation.

Because health care providers don't report, the mental illnesses of many people to the FBI, these people are able to pass a background check when they attempt to purchase a gun. Although the second amendment allows people the right to bear arms, it has become easy for the mentally ill and criminals to acquire guns and gun control should be strengthened for this very reason.
Every day an average of 315 people is shot due to murders, assaults, suicides, police intervention and a bunch of different other ways. There has been an increase in gun violence with a 39 percent increase from 2015 this is highly due to the increase in gun control actions across America. People state that the Second Amendment gives them the right to bear arms, which is correct but we have entered muddy waters on this subject with recent cases. I propose that we have better background check and really dig deep into a person’s facts. As well as have better knowledge of mental health problems, before we let anyone bear a firearm that way we can prevent a gun from getting into the wrong hands.
“The second amendment of The United States Bill of Rights is my concealed weapons permit, period.”- Ted Nugent. Saving lives one by one starts with limiting the purchase, sale, and use of guns in America. According to Alexander Lee, the political and social debate over the question of how much gun control is appropriate and it has been regularly discussed within the last decade. Shootings such as Sandy Hook, and Tucson shootings have raised the government’s awareness on guns and possible restrictions and regulations. Gun talks are discussed with the question, “Will controlling guns cut back on violent crime rates?” Although many guns are open to be sold to the public over 18, there are traditional gun laws that limit who can own them. These laws include sell restrictions to the mentally disabled, the age in which you can obtain a gun, background checks, and dishonorably discharged military personnel. Gun control laws could have a positive effect in America by reducing homicide rates, but at the same time, citizens still have the right to bear arms under the second amendment under the U.S constitution. Gun control laws do not mean the absolute confiscation of guns, but rather reduce the amount of power a gun and the amount of ammo that a gun can hold.
