In The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald has a running theme that excessive wealth and materialism will lead to carelessness, corruption, and destruction. Most of the characters in the book reflect this theme, like Tom and Daisy as they were careless to run away from their difficulties because they have the money and leave their mess for someone else to clean it up. However, some characters go against this theme, like Jay Gatsby. He came from a poor family, but grew to become a gentleman, and used that to lead another life, become rich, and one day would get the girl of his dreams. He uses that money on parties for the people and trying to get Daisy to go with him. Then there is someone else in real life that goes against this theme named Elon Musk. He found his money through the internet as he started his career founding companies, one of them being Paypal. He now uses this money to prolong humanities survival with companies such as SpaceX and Tesla Motorsports. The American Entrepreneur Elon Musk and Jay Gatsby goes against Scott Fitzgerald’s theme of excessive wealth and materialism will lead to carelessness, corruption, and destruction by using their money generously.

According to the newspaper company The Telegraph, daisies can become “serious weeds” and have the ability “thrive in generally inhospitable conditions.” This informative description of a common daisy mirrors F. Scott Fitzgerald’s character, Daisy Buchanan. In his novel, The Great Gatsby, Daisy tries to preserve the stability of her wealthy lifestyle through her marriage with Tom Buchanan instead of pursuing true love with Gatsby. Daisy becomes monotonous and dependent on wealth to act as an equilibrator of her life. Her dependency becomes uncontrollable, and that like that beautiful, innocent flower, she becomes a vile weed rooted in corruption. The Roaring Twenties era was a time of not only of crime, changing action and roles of women, but also of many other different social and cultural trends. The 1920s was the Progressive era that was a response to the Gilded Age. The Progressive era was filled with many reformers that aimed to reform the social issues like the women’s movement who had started a temperance movement to prohibit people from drinking. The 1920s was also a time of a social gap where the wealthy got more rich and the poor increased and stayed beyond the poverty line. In the Great Gatsby, the Valley of Ashes, automobiles, crime, and homes symbolize the social classes, and other cultural and social trends of the 1920s.

"I love you now—isn't that enough? I can't help what's past." She began to sob helplessly. "I did love him once—but I loved you too." (84) Gatsby's obsession with her seems shockingly unilateral, and it is clear to the reader that she will not leave Tom for him. You can also see why this confession is a blow to Gatsby. He has dreamed of Daisy for years and sees her as his one true love, while she not even can marshal her love of Gatsby over her love for Tom. Gatsby is too desperate and obsessed, and does not understand that he must move on as it is impossible to get back Daisy. This can also be explained by Daisy’s as we get an insight at her real feelings. As she sad in the quote, she loved them both, and to her those were equal loves. But, she has not put that initial love with Gatsby on a pedestal the way Gatsby has. Unlike Gatsby, Daisy is more tragic, a loving woman who has been corrupted by greed. She chooses the security of money and comfort over real love, and therefore he will never get back

According to the definition “symbolism” is "the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships."

The book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald has been read in schools for decades. The experience is different for everyone. Some may love this book while others just purely hate it. I have to say I am in between loving and hating this book. I do like the look into the lives of the rich of the 1920s and I did enjoy the overall story. However the cheating I wasn’t fond of. I do understand that is what happens with the rich so I do enjoy the fact that it historically accurate. Another topic that I will touch upon is the drunkenness and reckless driving portrayed, quite accurately, for this time period.

The point that I am going to talk about the story The Great Gatsby is the way they took care of materialistic things all through the story. A vital topic of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is riches and the procedure of achieving it. This longing for material riches and belonging is known as realism. Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan are both amazingly materialistic and put a great deal of quality into the belonging and abundance of a man while Nick Carraway doesn 't show any materialistic cravings and complements the complexity between characters. Gatsby 's realism is driven by his yearning for riches. He adores the thought of Daisy since she is the encapsulation of riches and the perfect way of life of ceaseless overabundance. Daisy then again speaks to a definitive materialistic way of life. She doesn 't have the same aching as Gatsby since she was naturally introduced to a privileged family. Rather she underestimates inordinate living and is entranced with all things lavish on the grounds that she needs to keep up the riches she has and never lose it. Scratch is the special case to the guideline. He stresses the divergence in the middle of himself and Gatsby or Daisy. He is the control to whom Gatsby and Daisy can be thought about.

In the novel, despite Gatsby 's own insecurities, he is viewed as an idol in society. Idols impact and influence Gatsby’s life and those living around him. Gatsby’s car represents an idol, illustrating his wealth, capturing attention, creating impressions, and covering misconceptions throughout life in the West Egg.

Dance has shaped the way we look at many different things throughout history. It has shaped how people socialize, what music people listen to, and even whole eras. One such era is the roaring 1920s. How did people socialize in the 1920s? They danced the evening away. What music did people listen to? Jazz music that they could listen to while they danced the evening away. Dance was a huge part of what made up the glorious Jazz Age. So, when a book was written to describe the 1920s scene, no doubt there had to be dance, and lots of it. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the energy level of the parties, music, and dancing to represent a vast array of emotions within the characters.

The American Dream has been around for years, and is forever changing. However, its basic principles of determination and purpose have always been around, except during the 1920s when they had become corrupted. This idea was shown throughout The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story gives great insight into what life was like during the 1920s from the characters’ perspectives. Through Gatsby’s lavish lifestyle, the readers get to see what the ultimate goal was for the American people at the time. However, what he had was not enough for him since all he ever wanted was to earn Daisy’s love. Gatsby’s dream was symbolized through the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, which he use to stare at night. Fitzgerald uses the green light to compare Gatsby’s hopeless quest for Daisy’s heart to the unobtainable, corrupted American Dream. He does this by showing how obsessed the characters are with having a life like Gatsby’s, and by having him die at the end of the novel without having achieved his dream.

Throughout the course of The Great Gatsby Nick seems to have changed for becoming a better person for his experiences on the East Coast.

Jay Gatsby, an American wealthy social identity, appears to have it all. But wealth, stature and an extravagant lifestyle seems not to be enough for Gatsby; he still yearns for his old idealistic love Daisy. In an ideal world this has the making of a great love story with a happy ending, but Fitzgerald chose to carry the story as a reflection of the American era the book is set in. An era consumed by appearances and excess and overall pursuit of the American dream.

Even though the book does make several bold statements about the way society was going at the time, the whole plot was revolved around Gatsby being madly in love with Daisy. The Great Gatsby is a love story that is messy, convoluted and at times impassive but that is what makes the story

After World War I, America offered the potential for boundless financial and social opportunities for those willing to work hard—an American Dream. The American Dream is defined as someone starting low on the economic or social level, and working hard towards prosperity and or wealth and fame. Establishing fame, becoming wealthy, having lavish luxuries, and a happy family would come to symbolize this dream. For some, however, striving for and realizing that dream ruined them, as many acquired wealth only to pursue pleasure. Even though the characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby appear to relish the freedom of the 1920s, their lives demonstrate the emptiness that results when wealth and pleasure become ends in themselves. Specifically, the empty lives of three characters from this novel— George Wilson, Jay Gatsby, and Daisy Buchanan—show that chasing hollow dreams results only in misery.
