Fitzgerald utilizes symbolism in the colors of certain objects throughout the novel to reveal a deeper meanings and to enhance the reader’s experience. Fitzgerald introduces Gatsby while he is reaching his hand out to a green light across the bay; the color green stands for something unattainable yet desirable. Colors are also symbolized through the outfits the characters wear in certain parts of the novel. Another prevalent symbol in the novel is Gatsby’s car, which is originally a cream color representing false purity but changes to an arresting yellow, symbolizing death and corruption.

While learning about The Great Gatsby preface, I learned that the Gatsby is not an uplifting story, its just a classic. I learned that F. Scott Fitzgerald was an alcoholic, and not the best of role models. I also learned that The Great Gatsby contains many memorable characters and that I may run into a lot of situations that reference this story, so I should read it.

The American Dream has been around for years, and is forever changing. However, its basic principles of determination and purpose have always been around, except during the 1920s when they had become corrupted. This idea was shown throughout The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story gives great insight into what life was like during the 1920s from the characters’ perspectives. Through Gatsby’s lavish lifestyle, the readers get to see what the ultimate goal was for the American people at the time. However, what he had was not enough for him since all he ever wanted was to earn Daisy’s love. Gatsby’s dream was symbolized through the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock, which he use to stare at night. Fitzgerald uses the green light to compare Gatsby’s hopeless quest for Daisy’s heart to the unobtainable, corrupted American Dream. He does this by showing how obsessed the characters are with having a life like Gatsby’s, and by having him die at the end of the novel without having achieved his dream.

Players are not realizing the truth behind Jordan’s statement and more and more players are starting to believe that its necessary to cheat in order to keep them a step ahead of their peers. Fans are also putting more pressure on these athletes by gambling. These star athletes now not only feel like they need to beat their opponents but they have to beat them enough to also win the spread. Based on various research and the novels, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Boost by Kathy Mackel sports are being corrupted by players cheating, players not being able to stay out of trouble, and fans gambling more frequently as time goes on.

America’s Roaring Twenties were a time of pivotal social change. After World War I, wartime factories were adapted to mass-produce commodities for the middle class, including some, like the radio, that many had never encountered before. For men who had previously lived simple lives on farms in the country, the contrast of experiencing the horrors of “The Great War” and returning to live and work in factory cities of technological wonder shook their assumptions about social and cultural norms – it was a new and exciting time; things were uncertain, but they were alive. For women, many of whom had worked in the factories during the war, the 1920's were a struggle against the oppression of the old culture, dominated by males, that left few roles for women other than submitting to their husbands while staying at home. They had had a taste of freedoms they were not about to give up, but few knew how to fight or what victory would even look like. Winning the right to vote and pushing into social circles by seizing behaviors that were previously exclusively male (or at least previously more outrageous for women) signaled a big change in social norms, but culture was slow to make sense of what a desirable role for women would and should be. “The Great Gatsby” is known as one of the great American novels set in the 1920s and tells a story of a man named Jay Gatsby and how he tried everything he could to get a girl, Daisy Buchanan, to love him only to end up floating in a pool of his own blood. One main aspect to the whole story is the idea of wealth and money. This can be seen at the front of the novel when Nick Carraway, Daisy’s cousin, talks about where he lives in west egg and that his cousin lives in old money east egg. Each side of town is wealthy but the old money looks down on the new money such as Jay Gatsby. The reason being that the Buchanan’s were born into money and didn’t have to work to obtain their wealth as Gatsby has. Throughout the novel this notion of being rich and wealthy is played out when nick goes to visit his cousin and he talks about her husband Tom Buchanan and how “even in college his freedom with money was a matter for reproach” (Fitzgerald 13) this shows that here is a person who has always been wealthy and has lived a life of luxury. As we find out later in the novel even with all this money and his wife, “the golden girl” (Fitzgerald 255) that he was having an affair leading one to believe that no matter what Tom had is was never enough for him. And one could even think of Gatsby in the same light. What if he did have daisy for himself would that be enough or would it be just

This semiautobiographical work uses fictitious characters to portray how people around Fitzgerald acted and what the overall theme of America was at this point in time. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald depicts America through Jay Gatsby, expresses the condition of the American dream through various characters, and relates the themes of dreams, wealth, and time to the environment he was living in.

James Truslow Adams, the author of The Epic of America, once said, “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. ” (The American) The American Dream is one thing uniquely American, a shared ideal among American people of all the different religions, socioeconomic classes, and lifestyles. It is a promise of hope and possibilities that America has been holding onto since its foundation, a promise of life’s meaningfulness and of one’s ability to reinvent oneself.

The Great Gatsby takes place in the summer of 1922 in Long Island and in New York City. Long Island has two parts: West Egg and East Egg. West Egg is home to those who have recently made their fortunes and is characterized by extravagant displays of wealth. East Egg, on the other hand, is home to those who have been garnished in wealth all through out their lives and are more sophisticated. The only thing separating the two Eggs is a “courtesy bay” (9). Between West Egg and New York City is a grey valley filled with ashes. An enormous sign that has two unblinking eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg oversees the valley of ashes and the events that occur in it.
