Gatsby’s mansion subsequently becomes the location of multiple lavish parties. During this time period, wealth took priority over personal values and moral standards and the rich lived extravagant lifestyles. Across the water from Nick and Gatsby is the Buchanan home, located on East Egg. Between New York and Long Island is the Valley of Ashes, a desolate wasteland essentially a dumping ground for modern and industrial waste. The novel portrays New York City in the 1920’s as a morally corrupt place where World Series could be fixed, criminal activities occurred, and affairs had.

One summer evening, Nick is invited to have dinner with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her wealthy husband, Tom Buchanan, at their house in the East Egg. At the Buchanans’ home, Nick meets Jordan Baker, a professional golfer with whom Nick becomes romantically involved. Nick learns from Jordan that Tom is having an affair and hears about Gatsby and his infamous parties. When he returns home, Nick sees his neighbor Gatsby reaching out towards a green light blinking at the end of a dock on the other side of the shore. Soon after that evening, Nick travels with Tom to New
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, is the story of the idiosyncratic millionaire Jay Gatsby. It is narrated by Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner from Long Island who later moves to Manhattan. Gatsby’s life is organized around one desire, Daisy, the woman he loved. This desire leads him on an expedition from poverty to wealth, reuniting with his old love, and his eventual death. In his novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald is able to portray the American Dream where people seek out self-gratification and pleasure. He captures the romance of the roaring twenties with the cars, money, illegal alcohol and the wildest parties one could imagine. Much like the character, Jay Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), wasn’t born into the upper class. While Gatsby is from the lower class, Fitzgerald from the middle class, both end up becoming exceptionally rich, fall into the wildest and reckless life, and use their fortunes to win the love and approval of the women they once loved.
Jay Gatsby is a self-made man, he turned himself from a farm boy to one of the richest men in America at the time and bought himself a beautiful mansion on West Egg, Long Island with the other new millionaires. In contrast to the newly rich, there are those who have inherited their wealth from family before them such as Tom and Daisy Buchanan. These people were lucky to be born into their lives and reside on East Egg along with other family’s with “old money”. Readers come to easily

“The past is never where you think you left it” (Katherine Anne Porter). People intentionally not willing to leave their past due to the prehistoric memories because the good memory they had. Relevant to Porter’s evince in the novel of The Great Gatsby by F. The story of The Great Gatsby is a novel that consists of a historical American context during the Harlem Renaissance. This was an excellent novel published in the 1920’s and was considered one of the best novels of its time. The author F. Scott Fitzgerald was an incredibly talented poetic author. Fitzgerald was able to emphasize and create the mood of the generation in a political time. The novel The Great Gatsby is a remarkable novel but also a very sad one. The novel took place during an age or era known as the “Roaring Twenties” which was a time of American wealth. Politics and corruption at the time is possibly what made Gatsby to be the business man he was.
The green light is a significant symbol closely associated with Gatsby’s dream. Readers are first introduced to the green light near the very beginning of the novel; it is located at the end of Daisy’s dock. Nick, the narrator of the novel, sees Gatsby peculiarly reaching out towards the water, so curiously, Nick goes to further observe what Gatsby is looking at and he sees "...nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock" (25). The green light is a representation of Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for his future. Gatsby’s reaching for the light represents his struggle to reach his goal, regaining Daisy as his companion. Gatsby’s mission to win Daisy becomes broadly associated with the American Dream. As long as long as Gatsby continues admiring the green light his hopes and dreams will continue to exist. As the novel progresses Nick discovers more about his neighbor Gatsby. Nick learns that Gatsby bought his particular house because it was the closest he could get to Daisy across the bay. Gatsby’s believes his luxurious mansion and his life style is an essential component to help him fulfill his dream. The symbol of the green light becomes even more distinct when Gatsby decides to show Daisy it. He says, "If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay... You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock”
The Roaring Twenties era was a time of not only of crime, changing action and roles of women, but also of many other different social and cultural trends. The 1920s was the Progressive era that was a response to the Gilded Age. The Progressive era was filled with many reformers that aimed to reform the social issues like the women’s movement who had started a temperance movement to prohibit people from drinking. The 1920s was also a time of a social gap where the wealthy got more rich and the poor increased and stayed beyond the poverty line. In the Great Gatsby, the Valley of Ashes, automobiles, crime, and homes symbolize the social classes, and other cultural and social trends of the 1920s.
The Great Gatsby is the novel that is based on how rich people were back in the old days. This Novel takes us through the early 1900’s where the narrator, Nick Carraway meets secretive Mr. Gatsby who is a Trimachio which means that he once was a poor young kid who believed in a greater future and by the time he gets older he becomes this very wealthy man who hosts lavish banquets. We are following Mr. Gatsby’s journey to the love of his life, Daisy who is Nick’s cousin. Since Gatsby has been gone for almost 5 years Daisy got married to another man called Tom. The novel ends with Gatsby being shot to death and no one was there to his funeral besides reporters and photographers, who Nick angrily chases out.
Some could say that there is a love so strong that it can blind one of the harsh realities of life and can make a fool out of anyone. This same blind love makes a fool of Jay Gatsby in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Jay Gatsby is a young, wealthy man, seeking to be reunited with his long lost love Daisy Buchanan. After Nick Carraway moves next to Gatsby, he is invited over to one of Gatsby’s parties. Once Gatsby and Nick start to become friends, Gatsby asks Nick if he would invite his cousin Daisy for tea. Gatsby had fantasized, for five years, the moment that he would finally get to see Daisy; however, she couldn’t live up to his embellished imagination. During the rest of the summer, the affair arises between the two until one catastrophic night leads Daisy to slink back into her money and her husband for a sense of security. Gatsby is a fool for wasting his time trying to repeat the past and rekindle his love with Daisy.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby follows the narrator Nick Carraway as he is lured into the lavish world of the fictional East and West Eggs of Long Island, New York. Nick’s neighbor Jay Gatsby is the focus of this lavish life. As Nick enters Gatsby’s world of extravagant parties and booze, he realizes the power wealth has on morality. Fitzgerald uses figurative language and diction to target an era of materialistic values to show how wealth can corrupt one’s morality with feelings of entitlement and superiority.
In the novel “ The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick describes Tom and Daisy as careless people which they are. Nick and Daisy are careless people because they can afford to be careless because of their money and use other people or do nothing at all for their own benefit. For example, When Tom told Myrtle that he could not marry her because he was in a relationship with daisy and she was catholic and did not believe in divorce and told lies to myrtle to use her as a toy even though myrtle was also using Tom to get to a higher social class for her own benefit even Nick stated that when she was with Tom that she would act like from a higher class when she was with tom. Another example of Tom 's and Daisy 's carelessness is that daisy wanted Gatsby and had her fun with Gatsby for a while, but did not face the consequences when it was time to tell Tom the truth of Daisy and Gatsby and instead ran away. Another reason that tom and daisy are careless is that neither Tom or daisy went to Gatsby 's funeral and just forgot him like nothing ever happened between the Buchanan family and Gatsby. All of this proves or is evidence that tom and daisy are careless people and money helps them take care of their problems.
New York city, but in particular East and West egg. The setting of New York heavily influences the characters. New York is a place of new opportunity and a major center of wealth. Nick is lured into the area by the promise of new chances, change, and a shot at making it big. “Instead of being the warm center of the world, the Middle West now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe- so i decided to go East and learn the bond business.” (page 3). Then there are the East and West egg residents. These are the rich of the rich in the New York area. They are the ones who carry themselves as if they have no care in the world, which they don’t. They own the biggest houses, the shiniest cars, and have the hottest wives. It was also a place of crime. During the 1920’s alcohol was illegal, thus the parties thrown at Gatsby's were illegal as alcohol was present. Also there is the fact that West egg housed the mighty bootlegger Jay Gatsby. This area attracted both the rich and the opportunity seekers bringing them together in a strange mix of wanting and
After World War I, America offered the potential for boundless financial and social opportunities for those willing to work hard—an American Dream. The American Dream is defined as someone starting low on the economic or social level, and working hard towards prosperity and or wealth and fame. Establishing fame, becoming wealthy, having lavish luxuries, and a happy family would come to symbolize this dream. For some, however, striving for and realizing that dream ruined them, as many acquired wealth only to pursue pleasure. Even though the characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby appear to relish the freedom of the 1920s, their lives demonstrate the emptiness that results when wealth and pleasure become ends in themselves. Specifically, the empty lives of three characters from this novel— George Wilson, Jay Gatsby, and Daisy Buchanan—show that chasing hollow dreams results only in misery.
“The Great Gatsby” and “Washington Square” are both novels that greatly depicted their time period and how society viewed men and women. “The Great Gatsby” is about a young man named Gatsby who tries to reignite an old relationship with his new found wealth. Gatsby essentially dedicates his entire life to get Daisy back while she has long moved on. “Washington Square” is about a young girl named Catherine who tries to find love with a man named Morris, but has to deal with the strict control of her father. Catherine’s aunt, Lavinia Penniman, was meddlesome in Catherine’s life which also greatly ruined Catherine’s and Morris’ relationship. These books focus on image, illusions and relationships. I will be focusing on various relationships in both novels.
