Chapter 1: In this chapter we meet Nick the narrator, and learn how he moved from the midwest to West Egg, Long Island, NY. The eggs are divided by the new unrefined rich in the west and the old rich in the east. Nick goes to a dinner at Tom Buchanan’s with his cousin Daisy and Jordan Baker. In the middle of the dinner Tom gets a call and it is revealed it is from his mistress. Back home he sees Gatsby standing at the water staring at a green light. Chapter 2: Nick travels with Tom to the valley of ashes to pick up his mistress Myrtle at Wilson’s garage, who is oblivious to the affair. They go to an apartment in uptown Manhattan picking up a puppy for her and have a party with various people. Nick gets drunk for the second and last time in his life. Towards the end of the party he sees Tom break Myrtle’s nose. …show more content…
He sees Jordan at the party and speaks to a man about their history in WW1, and discovers he was talking to Gatsby. Chapter 4: Nick rolls calls several people who went to Gatsby’s parties. He learns from Gatsby’s alleged past, from a wealthy family in San Francisco, went to war and won medals, and was educated at Oxford. Nick is very skeptical, and he goes with Gatsby to meet Meyer Wolfshiem and learns of his shady powers, hearing how he fixed the 1919 World Series. Jordan explains the history about Daisy, how desirable she was and her love with Gatsby, but when he was drafted for the war, she marries Tom Buchanan. But Gatsby proposes to Nick to set a meeting between the two at his home. Chapter 5: Nick allows for Gatsby’s plan to go through. Its a rainy day and Gatsby is extremely nervous. When they finally meet, it begins awkward, but then they bond and rekindle their love. After Nick arrives home from a date with Jordan, Nick gets disturbed by Gatsby who tries everything to convince Nick to set up a date with Daisy. Nick finally agrees and invites Daisy for tea. By the time Daisy arrives it starts to rain, Gatsby enters to meet her but it is not successful until a while later they start to warm-up and have a good time. Daisy is the object of desire and passion for Gatsby, she has dominated his life for the past couple years. His original love for her has developed into a love for the idea of her that has let his imagination fill in the blanks which is just setting him up for disappointment. She didn't become emotional with Gatsby until she saw all of his processions, this disappointment will remind Gatsby
When Cody was leaving on his yacht Gatsby left and went with him. As Gatsby traveled with them he learned that Cody was a heavy drinker. They traveled to the Barbary Coast and the West Indies. The entire trip was five years long in which they circled the continent three times. Cody had died and Gatsby was left with a singularly appropriate education and who he would be one day which was Jay Gatsby. Cody had left behind $25,000 for Gatsby. Ella Kaye had prevented Gatsby from getting the money that was left for him. After that Gatsby had begun to dedicate his life to becoming extremely wealthy and successful. Nick then goes back to explain that he hadn’t seen Gatsby or Daisy since he left them alone at Gatsby’s that day they met for tea. One day when Nick decided to go to Gatsby’s house he saw Tom Buchanan there and was shocked to see him. Tom was there with Mr. and Mrs. Sloane for a drink. Gatsby explained to Tom nervously that he knows Daisy. Gatsby invited them to stay for dinner but they all declined the offer. Tom has also not yet learned of Gatsby and Daisy’s love for eachother and that they have been seeing each other. Tom and Daisy go to one of Gatsby’s parties on a
Chapter five starts as Nick returns to his house, only to see Gatsby’s house looking like Coney Island because he wants it to look really nice for Daisy’s arrival. As he walks to his house he sees Gatsby approaching him. Nick explains to Gatsby that he has agreed to invite Daisy to tea, and he wants to know when Gatsby wants to carry out his plan. Gatsby has trouble picking a date because he wants to make sure that Nicks house and lawn look perfect for the occasion. This event is very important to Gatsby, so he is going to extremes to make sure that it is perfect. I think it’s really sweet that Gatsby wants to do so much for Daisy, who he hasn’t seen in almost five years! On Gatsby’s big day it is pouring rain and he is wearing “a white flannel suit, silver shirt, and a gold-colored tie”. The rain and Gatsby’s clothes are symbols that I will talk about later on. As time closes in at four o’clock, Gatsby becomes worried that Daisy is not going to come, but in reality he is afraid of the possible outcomes of their encounter. When Daisy arrives she doesn’t immediately see Gatsby because he ran out of the back of the house into the rain. This action has a deeper meaning than you think, which I will talk about later. When Gatsby reenters the house and sees
Summary- In Chapter 3, Nick's long awaited and wanted introduction of Gatsby happens. It happens at Gatsby's party, in which Nick is given an invitation to by a chauffeur in symbolic robin's egg blue. While at the party, Nick searches for a friend in which to attend the party with
Chapter seven starts with Gatsby changing his whole life around. He no longer hosts parties every week, he doesn't need to anymore because he has Daisy. He also fires his past servants and replaces them with workers of Meyer Wolfsheim, since he does not want any gossip around him. To Nick’s surprise, Gatsby was headed over to Tom’s house to have lunch. It is the hottest day of the year when this lunch is happening. The group hears Tom yelling at Mr.Wilson on the telephone. Gatsby sees Pammy, Daisy’s daughter and is somewhat irritated because he realizes how much more complicated the situation had become and the fact that there is living proof of Tom and Daisy’s love. Tom finds out about the affair when Daisy’s tone shifted when she spoke to
Chapter 4 starts off with Nick providing a list of all the guests who attended Gatsby’s parties in the summer and the irony is that none of them actually knew him. When Nick accompanies Gatsby on a trip into the city for lunch, he reveals the truth about his past. Gatsby states that he is from a wealthy family from the Midwest town of San Francisco, he graduated from Oxford, and declared himself a hero in the war. During lunch, Gatsby introduces Nick to his former business partner, Meyer Wolfsheim who apparently fixed the 1919 World Series. Based on the conversation, Nick begins to think that Gatsby is involved in an organized crime. When they leave the restaurant, they come across Tom Buchanan and as Nick introduces Gatsby to him, Gatsby becomes
He begins to look at everyone differently; Jordan as dishonest, Tom and Daisy as “careless”, Gatsby as secretive. Nick becomes so involved in this new world going on around him through the new friendships he made with Gatsby, Tom, Jordan and Daisy. The more he gets drawn into their relationships, the more lies he has to tell to keep from everything falling apart. He continuously lies and helps Gatsby by covering for him and trying to help him and Daisy rekindle their relationship. Nick soon watches Gatsby's dream unravel and is astonished by the lack of people that show up to his funeral.
This chapter starts out with the description of another part of New York known as the “Valley of Ashes.” This is the poverty side of New York and is noticeably poor since it's referred to such a name. We are introduced to another character named George Wilson and his wife Myrtle. Tom takes Nick to George Wilson's garage, which is located in the Valley of Ashes. By this we know that George Wilson is a poor man.Tom is cheating on his wife for Wilson's wife which is pretty absurd.Tom takes a visit to a party with Catherine, and brings Daisy Nick and Myrtle along with him. (Catherine and Myrtle are sisters). The group starts gossiping about Gatsby, while getting drunk. Myrtle then begins to annoy Tom because she keeps talking about his wife Daisy. This non-stop talk about
Nick’s parting from Gatsby at the end of this chapter parallels his first sighting of Gatsby at the end of Chapter 1. In both cases, Gatsby stands alone in the moonlight pining for Daisy. In the earlier instance, he stretches his arms out toward the green light across the water, optimistic about the future. In this instance, he has made it past the green light, onto the lawn of Daisy’s house, but his dream is gone
1 in the beginning of the book the narrator, nick caraway, describes himself. He then goes on to tell how one summer he move out to New York, west egg. West egg was a place for people that were rich but didn’t know any important people. Those kinds of people lived in east egg. Nick then goes to visit his cousin, Daisy, who is leaving in east egg. When he gets there he is greeted by her husband, tom. He is a sporting man and also a racist. When they are eating dinner he gets a phone call that daisy’s friend Jordan says is from his lover. Nick then goes home and sees Mr. Gatsby standing on his dock.
He goes to the party seeing there are being all around the giant mansion. As Nick asked people, he found out something strange. He noticed that out of all those people he was the only person to get an invite. As time passed, Nick had finally met the Great Gatsby. He looked way younger than thought he would be, seeing a completely different man than imagined. Daisy, Nick's cousin that still hasn't heard from Gatsby heard that he lives just right across the bay. The next weekend came by as Nick not knowing Daisy and Gatsby knew each other and Nick took her to the party. Nick found to like Gatsby as a great friend telling him, "You're worth the whole damn bunch put together."Gatsby and Nick became better friends. Again, Gatsby and Daisy then met again and saw love right away. This is when Gatsby completes his American Dream, He is rich, and now has the girl he loves with him. Daisy getting all the attention and anything she wants is able to love and live with him. As time goes by Tom starts to figure things out as he finds out they love each other. Gatsby was wanting her to tell tom the she loves Gatsby but she says she loves them both. They all get into an argument and Daisy runs to Gatsby car, as they're driving angrily Daisy hits and kills Tom's mistress running out into the road wanting a ride but doesn't stop. Then finding out whose vehicle it was they think it is Gatsby. The husband of the dead wife all drunk went to Gatsby's house and shot him dead then shot himself. Right then ended The Gatsby American Dream.
After Gatsby hosts a party which Nick and Daisy and Tom attend, Gatsby gets upset because he doesn’t think that Daisy liked what he had made of himself. He wants to live in the past, despite Nick’s warning against it. Nick reflects on this and what he thinks Gatsby was like. After that, he tells a story about Gatsby’s life 5 years ago, when he was walking with Daisy.
Gatsby arranges to have tea with Daisy at Nick’s house without her knowing. She had no idea she’d be seeing Gatsby there. They finally reunite, and like most people, Gatsby was nervous to see a girl he liked/loved after so many years. They both said they were happy to see each other but both felt embarrassed by one another's company. Daisy lies to Nick when she tells him her life was terrible. “I felt the basic insincerity of what she had said… as though the whole evening had been a trick of some sort to exact a contributory emotion from me.” After having tea with Daisy, Gatsby invites both her and Nick over to his place. Daisy was impressed with all the nice things he had. “They're such beautiful shirts, she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. ‘It makes me sad because i've never seen such-such beautiful shirts
Nick and mr Gatsby became close friends and they started talking frequently, mr Gatsby and Nick went to have lunch together, as they spoke to each other, Gatsby tells nick about his past but his story seemed untrue, he claims he's a son of the wealthy deceased parents from the Midwest. He also graduated form Oxford University he even had a picture of him playing cricket as a prove. Gatsby is so famous to the extent that when he got stopped my a policeman when we was speeding, all he did was to shadow them a white card and the police man apologized for stoping him. Gatsby takes nick to lunch and he introduces Nick to Meyer Wolfsheim. Wolfsheim is a shady character with underground business connections. This gives nick the feeling that Mr Gatsby's wealth is not pleasant. after the lunch, Nick saw Jordan, and Jordan told him mr Gatsby and daisy use to love each other then, that mr Gatsby told her, mr Gatsby also said he was in love with her during first world war, daisy love him too but she married
Not long after this revelation, Nick travels to New York City with Tom and Myrtle. At a vulgar, gaudy party in the apartment that Tom keeps for the affair, Myrtle begins to taunt Tom about Daisy, and Tom responds by breaking her nose. As the summer progresses, Nick eventually garners an invitation to one of Gatsby’s legendary parties. He encounters Jordan Baker at the party, and they meet Gatsby himself, a surprisingly young man who affects an English accent, has a remarkable smile, and calls everyone “old sport.” Gatsby asks to speak to Jordan alone, and, through Jordan, Nick later learns more about his mysterious neighbor. Gatsby tells Jordan that he knew Daisy in Louisville in 1917 and is deeply in love with her. He spends many nights staring at the green light at the end of her dock, across the bay from his mansion. Gatsby’s extravagant lifestyle and wild parties are simply an attempt to impress Daisy. Gatsby now wants Nick to arrange a reunion between himself and Daisy, but he is afraid that Daisy will refuse to see him if she knows that he still loves her. Nick invites Daisy to have tea at his house, without telling her that Gatsby will also be there. After an initially awkward reunion, Gatsby and Daisy reestablish their connection. Their love rekindled, they begin an affair. After a short time,
