In November of 1864 a chief by the name of Black Kettle a leader of a Cheyenne band traveled to Fort Lyon to surrender to the military, the fort commanders directed the indians to set up camp by Sand Creek. Also camped near the Cheyenne band was the third regiment, a volunteer group lead by John M. Chivington who would lead an attack on the Cheyenne, even though he was aware of their surrender. When his officers disagreed with him pointing out that an attack on the Cheyenne would violate the promise of safety and that they could be charged for murder Chivington supposedly responded with “Damn any man who sympathizes with Indians! I have come to kill Indians, and believe it is right and honorable to use any means under God’s heaven to kill Indians.” (Native America) Chivington carried out the orders to attack the camp in the morning, Black Kettle flew the American told his people not to be afraid as they saw the soldiers and heard the gunshots, because they were under the protection of the U.S. government, it is also reported that a white flag was also flown. Both were ignored as the soldiers attacked the camp and fought the warriors that stayed to allow their families and others to escape up the creek bed (Native America).Captain Silas Soule disagreed with Covington and ordered his men to stay out of the battle and remained onlookers to the massacre, helping neither side. Soule also wrote a letter describing the horrific details of the massacre to his former commanding officer stating that the massacre was “six or eight hours” , he also recounted the horrors committed by soldiers on women and children “One squaw was wounded and a fellow took a hatchet to finish her, she held her arms up to defend her, and he cut one arm off, and held the other with one hand and dashed the hatchet through her brain. One squaw with her two children, were on their
In today’s news we see many disruptions and inconsistencies in society, and, according to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, humankind might be headed in that direction. The deterioration of society is a concept often explored biologically in novels, but less common, is the effect on everyday social constructs such as the position of women as a item that can be distributed and traded-in for a ‘better’ product. The Handmaid’s Tale elaborates the concept that, as societal discrimination towards women intensifies, gender equality deteriorates and certain aspects of societal freedoms are lost. Offred’s experience with serving Gilead demonstrates a victim’s perspective and shows how the occurring changes develope the Republic.
In June, Grant led his expedition on the same route Montgomerie had taken. Sensing another ambush at a pass near the site of Montgomerie's battle, Grant dispatched Marion with 30 men to flush out the Cherokees. Using trees for cover, Marion's detachment cautiously advanced within range of the Cherokees, whereupon the Indians sounded their war cry and fired. By the time the pass was secured, only nine of Marion's men were left. Grant's column proceeded through the pass and engaged the Cherokees for several hours, until the Indians fled. Marion's capture of the pass allowed Grant to create a path of destruction in the Cherokee lands, burning 15 Indian towns and destroying their corn crops. Finally, Chief Attakullakulla, known by some as "Little Carpenter," surrendered.
Using an ancient tactic of warfare, the Sioux waited until troops thought the fighting had halted. Setting up decoys and the strategy plans, Red Cloud was ready to see the white man’s blood fall on the plains. When US Calvary men began to advance outside their fort range in search of a plea or peace treaty. Red Cloud gave the order for Crazy Horse to commence a raid. White men were butchered like cattle on the battlefield where
Though existing accounts of the incident vary the misfortune considered to have commenced a day earlier with the murder of two Mingos. Furious over the killings several tribesmen traveled over the Ohio to Baker’s tavern and trading post where the group of whites headed by Greathouse appeared and supplied them with whiskey12. As the Mingos were in an inebriated state, Greathouse and his men killed the Indians13. Their slaughter turned Logan, an old ally, into a merciless adversary, capturing around thirteen scalps in
The massacre at Wounded Knee was the last action in a long and bloody war that pitted Native American Indians against U.S Military forces. For roughly 300 years the two sides had been in constant conflict across America in a battle for land, resources, and ultimately; freedom. This final massacre solidified the American hold on the west and closed the final chapter on a way of life that can never be brought back. Lakota Indians, having learned of the death of Sitting Bull started to move towards Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in hopes of finding protection from Red Cloud. However, the harsh South Dakota winter weather had different plans, causing Chief Big Foot to become extremely ill. The Lakota came across cavalry forces
Can human live without love? The answer is evidently no. Love can be defined as: the most spectacular, indescribable, deep euphoric feeling for someone. Margaret Atwood, the author of the outstanding dystopian fiction the handmaid 's tale (1985) had once in her book said: " nobody dies from lack of sex. It 's lack of love we die from.” In this novel, Atwood specifically depicts a society where relationships have been altered, undermined and in many ways forbidden. The key word in the issue of relationships is love. In the Republic of Gilead, a form of theocratic government, women had lost their ability to love. The protagonist Offred is a handmaid whose sole purpose in life is to reproduce a child. Gilead expects its handmaids to have faith in its commandments, but has removed love and hope from them. Women became objects and sex slaves to men. Therefore, the relationships of the protagonist Offred are unhealthy as well as abnormal, yet they are source of hope for Offred to survive from this theocratic form of government. Her relationship with the commander is strained but profitable, her relationship with Serena Joy has lots of tensions and conflicts; and her relationship with Nick is subtle as well as controversial.
The Indians held out for two hours, but when they ran out of ammunition, the soldiers surrounded them and the battle became a massacre. “Approximately 250 Shoshoni were slain, including 90 women and children” (Madsen). Connor’s men ended the misery of the wounded by bashing their heads in with an axe. After the slaughter, the soldiers pillaged the village, taking 1,000 bushels of wheat and flour along with 175 Shoshoni horses (Madsen). When the murderers finished collecting the spoils, they burned down 75 lodges. After their gruesome acts, Colonel Connor and his troops walked away celebrating their victory while the bodies of the massacred Indians were left to the wolves and
Even though the soldiers won the battle, it hadn’t felt like a victory. 25 soldiers were lost, along with 150 Native American lives. A price, that couldn’t be easily repaid.
Amid the tension, a shot rang out, possibly from a deaf brave who misunderstood his chief's orders to surrender. The Seventh Cavalry the reconstructed regiment lost by George Armstrong Custer who opened fire on the Sioux. The local chief, BIGFOOT, was shot in cold blood as he recuperated from pneumonia in his tent. Others were cut down as they tried to run away. Accompanying the second wave of feminism in the 1960s and 1970s, was a surge of feminist literary critics. Writing had always been a male-dominated field in which women were expected to either not join or to write like a man. The new wave of feminism encouraged authors to display the inequality and discrimination faced by women, both in literary works and in society as a whole, as well as write in traditionally feminine ways. These empowered authors had an effect that could not be confined to the pages of their work causing women to reflect on their position in the world and inspiring them to stand up against what they did not like in their lives. The landscape of literature also changed drastically as the work of women gained greater prominence, though it was not
The sex of oneself to another may not define the under-investigated and most detailed feelings that hide within this specific tale of the Gilead society. What feelings have come up within Offred concerning the commander and are they good or bad?
We camped late on the third day. I went around to everyone and told them to be quiet. We didn’t know how far they were ahead of us. Everyone be alert, I’m taking Big Jake and scout around for a few hours. I took off my boots and took some moccasins from my saddlebags. A little trick I learned from the Indians. I saved some charcoal from our fire and rubbed on my face and hands. I’ll hoot twice so you know it’s me. I called Big Jake and we went hunting. What’s he going to do, the Marshall asked Efren. Shake them up, take a few scalps. Maybe cut a few throats. I know I wouldn’t want Big Zach and Big Jake after my hide Efren said.
A Critical Analysis of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” In this dystopia novel, it reveals a remarkable new world called Gilead. “The Handmaid’s Tale,” by Margaret Atwood, explores all these themes about women who are being subjugated to misogyny to a patriarchal society and had many means by which women tried to gain not only their individualism and their own independence. Her purpose of writing this novel is to warn of the price of an overly zealous religious philosophy, one that places women in such a submissive role in the family. I believe there are also statements about class in there, since the poor woman are being meant to serve the rich families need for a child. As the novel goes along the narrator Offred is going between the past and
