The Highlands is a low-income community that is facing a major issue with crime caused by adolescents. Instances of criminal activity inflicted by the youth in a community is an issue that plagues many areas in our country. The Highlands is facing types of criminal activity that frequently ranges from vandalism, theft, burglaries and assaults on other members of the community. There is also a fear from the community that gangs from neighboring areas are going to move into The Highlands. City officials and leaders of the community want to decrease the area’s crime rate by being more proactive with its adolescents and the opportunities …show more content…
Department of Education, 2015). One study by Alspaugh looked at the relationship between schools and community characteristics and how those affected high school dropout rates (Alspaugh, 1998). This study looked at 428 Missouri school districts and their average dropout rates over the past five years. Alspaugh examined previous research and concluded that socioeconomic status was the most important factor in student dropout rates. Other related factors that were found to be important factors in student dropout rates were “family background, personal problems, and school-related factors” (Alspaugh), but found that all of these would be difficult to address directly.
Alspaugh also found that increasing vocational course offerings did not increase student retention (1998). School climate seemed to be more important to student retention than the diversity of the instructional program (Alspaugh, 1998). Alspaugh even goes on to infer that the more course offerings, it became possible for the student body to fracture into more isolated groups, which caused deterioration in the school’s climate and therefor lead to more dropouts (1998). Other points of interest brought forth by Alspaugh was that dropout rates had a high positive correlation with unemployment and crime rates, and that the “participation in highly visible extracurricular activities” showed to be
When it comes to high school dropout rates, there are many factors that need to be considered before attempting to suggest a reason, and a solution to the issue. One of the first
Next to academic achievement, the rate of school attendance showed the strongest relationship to dropout (Christle, Jolivette, & Nelson, 2007). Failure to complete homework, follow school rules, follow civil law, and lack of participation in activities, were all signs of disengagement,
In time, violent crimes were slowly being decreased in the United States, but it seems to be making some sort of a comeback when it comes to youth violence and violence affiliated with gangs. This topic has appeared to be a dominant target for educators,
In society today, there is a major problem We live in a society where gangs are taking over our neighborhoods in numbers. It is the responsibility of the individuals to part take in getting their neighborhoods back under control. Gangs are becoming a growing problem in American society. More young people are turning to gangs to solve problems in their lives or for acceptance. When youths join gangs, they drop all their social activities with school, family, and friends. City Heights East is divided by many different ethnicities. There is 54.3% Hispanic, 20.9% Asian, 15% Black, 7.3% White, 2.2% mixed, and 0.3% other. With this data we can see that there is is range of different ethnicities and not one fully overrides other. This is a diverse community with some great cultures throughout. With this comes crime. With a total of about 30 assaults in the past year, there needs to be a sense of community rather than a sense of territory. Within this sections it will review the cost of living, the employment rates, the school’s, and the community organization. These are all important when looking at a specific crime and how to improve it within the community.
In a review of research, Boesel et al. (1994) noted that descriptive findings indicated that vocational students were less likely than general students to drop out (if more likely than academic students). However, students who defined themselves as vocational students in 12th rather than 9th grade in a follow-up survey or who were defined by having a vocational concentration were often much less likely to drop out than
The history of this problem primarily focuses on the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the rate of youth homicides increased dramatically for many cities. Specifically in
$10,510, that’s how much less a high school dropout earns annually than an individual with a high school diploma according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A dropout is less likely to be employed, more likely to be incarcerated and more likely to live in poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, due to incarceration, less paid in taxes and other factors a high school dropout costs taxpayers $292,000 over their lifetime. The financial costs alone should be enough to find ways to increase graduation rates. Research has shown early predictors of dropout are parental education level and early low literacy in the child. Families from one generation to another have a difficult time escaping poverty and families from one generation to another have difficulty improving literacy
There are other factors associated with early school leaving. Researchers have focused on three different topics. First topic, student and family factors identified as contributing to dropouts is gender, racial, and ethnic minority status, low socioeconomic status, poor school performance, low self-esteem, delinquency, substance abuse, and pregnancy. In addition to this research has also gathered the impact of certain family characteristics, such as single-families,
Juveniles committing crimes, being arrested and going to jails and prisons, is a sad fact that has hit every city, in every state in the United States of America. It is not a hard thing to comprehend, turn on the TV and watch the news. Every night there is surely to be a report about a crime committed by one of America’s youth. Many people question the reason for such high numbers of juveniles committing crimes; others turn a blind eye and refuse to acknowledge the fact that every day more children of this country are slipping into the life of crime. Some concerned members of society ask what can be done to stop it; how can they help? The answer is action! Law enforcement, as well as Local, State, and
High school dropout rate is a significant indicator of future success in life. For high school dropouts, it is harder to find jobs and earn as much money as their graduated peers. On the outside looking in, not being able to graduate is usually associated with school performance, socioeconomic status, parents’ education level and/or lack of motivation. Moreover, there are also underlying factors of race and gender and they both affect performance in high school immensely. In order to study dropout rates, focus should be put on the group of students at risk of dropping out.
Youth today are dealing with violence that’s happening across the globe. It is unknown to predict a state of action that the delinquent will do, but there are many preventions that we are able to take advantage of. Violence is one of the greatest fear that many of our youths may experience. Many recent activities that occurred with school shootings, those that are domestic or foreign abused, mass media of current brutality, even interpersonal conflicts may have conflicted with the state of mind that is threatening to our community. Instead, we can support with many preventable delinquency programs with the troubled youth that helps them get involved with the community such as afterschool programs, clubs, volunteer work, or even booth camps are one of many to interact
According the the Durham Police Department’s 2015 Annual Report, the number of juvenile arrests for youth ages 9 to 17, totaled 686 with crimes such as burglary, vandalism, assault, robbery, and drug violations (Durham Police Department 2015 Annual Report, 2015, p. 15). As resident and native of Durham, North Carolina and potential Human Service Professional, I am left with feelings of hopelessness and dismay after discovering these statistics. Our mission at Walden University is to incite social change in our professions, using the knowledge that we gain from completing our education. Establishing a preventative intervention program represents an opportunity to make an impact on the community where I was raised. Growing up in Durham, I have
Community oriented policing is the proactive deployment method used by patrol officers in order to find solutions to why crime is occurring within a given community. Officers use their critical thinking and problem solving skills to analyze and uncover the underlying issues of a community that are posing threats to public safety and address ways this can be prevented. In many communities throughout the United States, police officers strive to build better relationships with community members, yet building relationships with youth within a community, especially a community over run by gangs, crime and drugs is a much tougher issue. These juveniles are at higher risk for entering into the juvenile justice system based on the many risk
In Canada the percentage of youth has increased only in a year by 3% while the violent crimes among young people increased by 30%. Especially, in metropolitan cities this phenomenon is more common and there are a lot of kids that don’t get to choose to join a street gang, but either that’s where they grow up and experience it from a really young age, or the do it because of their need of approval. Experts have seen that in order to prevent youth crime, it’s necessary to keep the kids and the young generation away from negative social activities and scenes before it’s too late and they get involved to criminal
