I. Subject The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien, tells of the hardships and struggles of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives in a hobbit hole named Bag End. Bilbo is “hired” by a party of dwarves to go on an adventure to get their stolen gold from the lonely mountain. The only catch is that the mountain is guarded by the dragon, Smaug. Bilbo goes on a quest throughout Wilderland meeting enemies like Trolls, Elves in the Elven hall, and Goblins in the Goblin tunnels. Bilbo discovers an important creature named Gollum in these Goblin tunnels. Gollum possess a powerful ring that makes the wearer invisible. Bilbo finds this ring in the Goblin tunnels and takes it. It helps Bilbo in many ways, most importantly allowing bilbo to talk to Smaug without being seen. While talking with the dragon Bilbo discovers the one and only weak spot of the dragon, a chip in his gem plated scales. The dragon then attacks a town of men and is slain by Bard, a skillful bowman. The dwarves then reclaim their stolen treasure in the Lonely Mountain. Greed leads armies of all races to the Lonely Mountain wanting some of the gold and loot inside. The greed causes a battle to happen in which the Dwarf King Thorin is killed. Bilbo then returns to Bag End as a new person. He is braver, bolder, and more courageous than he was before the journey. II. Theme In J.R.R Tolkien 's The Hobbit there is no better way to say it than, do not not judge a book by its cover. One day the Grey Wizard Gandalf came
Bilbo helps the dwarves get out of jail at night. Bilbo opens the cage and runs to the cave.Bilbo got him down from the tree and then that spent the night in the cave. Bilbo had a dream that he was going to be eaten by the cave. Bilbo was chased by wolves when he was trying to get dwarves out of the tree.
By putting his life in danger Bilbo shows a true example of heroism. Though the dwarves were still skeptical of his abilities, they were starting to take into consideration of what Gandalf had said about this little hobbit. Continuing their adventure the group is attacked by goblins where they are eventually saved by Gandalf. Throughout the turmoil of the attacking goblins Bilbo gets lost in the caves and finds himself alone in the darkness. It is in this event when Bilbo finds Gollum’s ring. Gollum was a sickly looking creature that had been dwelling in the caves for many years. Bilbo used his wits to outsmart the creature by playing a riddle game with him and eventually made it to safety. Having Bilbo win the riddle game shows that his smart and witty mind aids him in becoming the hero. Bilbo wasn’t some tough strong stereotypical super hero, he used his smarts to outwit his foes and to triumph over evil. Though Bilbo at the time did not know the power of the ring that he had retrieved from Gollum’s lair (the power of invisibility), it was his heroic fate that he found it as it assist him in becoming the hero of the story. Fate has it that Bilbo will become a hero, but Bilbo also has the courage on top of his fate to get the dwarves out of life threatening situations.
Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach” (Tolkien 141-142). This event has led to Bilbo beginning to believe in himself, which is an important contribution to his overall development into the hero of this tale. Finally, when Bilbo is met with the task of meeting the dragon Smaug, he does not turn back. Even when he must walk alone through the dark, secluded hallway to Smaug’s lair knowing that he could meet his doom at any instant, he walked on. His internal being knows this is his final test of courage, and his will to carry on demonstrates his final development into a hero.
We are introduced to hobbits and to Bilbo Baggins, a stay-at-home, utterly respectable hobbit with a secret desire for adventure. Bilbo receives a visit from Gandalf the wizard. The next Wednesday Gandalf returns for tea, bringing with him a party of thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. Despite misgivings on both sides, on Gandalf's recommendation the dwarves hire Bilbo as Burglar on an expedition to the Lonely Mountain, where they plan to recover their ancestral treasure from the dragon Smaug.
The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien is about a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins. His father is a Baggins, who are considered respectable, and his mother is a Took, who often went on adventures. One day while in his hobbit hole on The Shire, an old friend of the family, Gandalf, comes by, offering him an adventure, which is declined. Shortly after, while having tea, Bilbo has thirteen dwarves unexpectedly come into his home along with the wizard Gandalf. Among them is Thorin Oakenshield who was a descendant of Thror, the King of the Mountain until it and all its gold was taken by Smaug the dragon. The next morning, mostly by being pressured by Gandalf and the Took side of him, Bilbo meets the others at a hotel, and joins their adventure to go to the dragon, as their burglar. They encounter many challenges along the road such as goblins, geographically dangerous paths, wolves, giant spiders, not having the help of a wizard the whole way, and always running low on provisions. While there were many external conflicts, Bilbo endured many personal conflicts such as desiring to be back in his hobbit hole in safety, and enjoying being a Took and adventurous. During the first encounter with the goblins, Bilbo is left alone and he encounters a creature named Gollum who continuously talked to himself. He finds Gollum’s ring which allows anyone who wears it to turn invisible. The ring helps him along the journey to escape from the goblin hole, and help the dwarves when they’re taken
In the novel The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, the main character, Bilbo Baggins, experiences dramatic change as he leaves his peaceful home to embark on a dangerous quest. Bilbo battles spiders, goblins and trolls hoping to help a company of dwarves reclaim their home from a dragon. He travels across Middle Earth and meets many different people along the way. The situations Bilbo is placed in define many of the elements of the story.
Firstly, Bilbo grows bolder and more curious as he begins his adventures. The first stage of a hero’s journey is the Separation, in which the hero leaves his known world, or home, and crosses into the Unknown (Thompson and Harris 7). Bilbo resides in Bag-End, his hobbit-hole, where he lives as a “very respectable [hobbit who]...never had any adventures or did anything unexpected” (Tolkien 2). Bag-End represents Bilbo’s known world, where he lives comfortably and complacently. Next, Bilbo undergoes the first step of the hero’s journey, the Call, which occurs when the protagonist is called to adventure (Thompson and Harris 8). Bilbo is not particularly brave or gifted, but when Gandalf chooses him to be the burglar
In J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”, Bilbo Baggins proves himself as a much inspiring main character. He helps his newfound dwarf associates find and kill Smaug, “‘the dragon who settled on their mountain in a spout of flame’”(Tolkien 24). In these many travels, Bilbo lets the adventurous, or “Tookish”, side of him show. In doing so, he saves his friends and himself many times. He realizes how much he can do and how he has become a hero throughout the journey to his dwarfish friends and others.
Being a hobbit who's lived his entire life in a comfortable hole in the ground, he's very reluctant to adventure with Gandalf and the dwarves. But when Gandalf leaves the group, Bilbo's heroic instinct kicks in. With the help of his invisibility ring, Bilbo rescues the dwarves whenever they happen to run into trouble, especially throughout Mirkwood, when they run into the spiders or the elves. The bravest thing Bilbo ends up doing, however, comes when he and the dwarves reach the Lonely Mountain. Being the first individual to enter the dragon's lair, he meets the infamous Smaug, discovers a weakness in its armor, and smoothly talks his way out of being eaten by the gargantuan
The events associated with J.R.R Tolkien’s book The Hobbit resembles a hero’s quest journey, step by step until the final stage. Bilbo Baggins is the main character in this book and his life sonorously fits into in a typical hero quest journey. The three primary components of Bilbo’s quest are, the call to adventure, tests, allies and enemies, and the reward. In the book The Hobbit, Bilbo’s life is very plain and simple until he embarks on a marvelous journey with thirteen dwarfs and the wizard Gandalf, together they go on an obstacle filled journey to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the dragon. Throughout the story Bilbo and the Dwarfs are tested several times unit the get to the last stage. Therefore the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is one of the classic hero quest stories because of the many affairs that resemble the hero quest cycle.
He keeps everything to himself and has a low sense of confidence and wisdom of such any undertaking venture. Until 13 dwarves and a wizard came long, Bilbo was ruzed into helping the dwarves asset their gold over the brimming mountains abducted by a fire- breathing dragon, Smaug. Throughout their march to the Lonely Mountains, the dwarves and hobbit were interrogated with spiders, flies, trolls, goblins, elves and Lake men. Through the first part of the campaign, the dwarves were tramping through a lightness, dungeon-like tunnels with bilbo being hoisted up by Dori. On spur of moment, Bilbo was grappled from behind and no one knew who or what it was. The hobbit fell and bowled over a boulder making him unconscious. Furthermore into the dim tunnels Bilbo has awaken, and was challenged to exchange riddles with a creature that threatened to devour him if he does not answer his riddles correctly. Small slimy creature, no one knew where it derived from. Golum was its name. Throughout the riddles, Bilbo obtained assurance from not getting eaten by
This earns Bilbo some respect from the dwarves as they begin to realize that he is a beneficial asset to their group. Soon after a threatening thunderstorm occurs which renders Bilbo unconscious in a cave. Later when he awakes, Bilbo finds a ring which he absent-mindedly pockets. Bilbo uses quick-wit and bravery to outsmart Gollum, a creature who lives in the cave, in a game of riddles. Afterwards, when Gollum attempts to kill him, Bilbo uses his new ring to elude the creature by turning invisible and escaping this demonstrates Bilbo's newfound
The capability of beaming brightly and showing strength in the face of great pain, grief, or danger. To be seen in admiration by the people for one’s noble qualities and achievements. This defines the courageous behavior to that of a hero. During the progression of the novel, The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien, a clear resemblance of heroism has been shown by many characters throughout. However, when asked to define the term “hero,” the majority of people would describe a physically strong man, who’s tall and stands in the face of danger; people such as Beowulf, Sir Gawain, and King Arthur. In contrast to that common stereotype, Tolkien describes nothing but an undersized and feeble farmer named Bilbo Baggins, who lives in a well furbished hole in the ground, and how this man will embark on an unexpected journey to become a heroic figure. This reveals the fact that society doesn’t dictate the standards of a hero; only that individual can regulate their own future, and how they can be a conqueror too.
Their journey will take them into the Wild; through dangerous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Giant Spiders. Through the journey of reclaiming the lonely mountain, Bilbo has found himself a ring with unique powers. A simple gold ring that may change the fate of Middle-earth in ways Bildo cannot begin to
