This is an Assignment For my 9th-grade literacy class. We had to make a thematic statement on the Book The House on Mango Street” written by Sandra Cisneros. My thematic statement is Be careful because the worst can happen to the best of us. This is Relevant to us because It's true. The people Going through the recent hurricanes they didn't deserve to be ripped from their homes. Every 100 Seconds One American Is Assaulted. None of them deserved this a good portion of them are underage. Even though she was innocent she was still the victim. She was raped in the chapter red clowns. In the quote, the author says in her book,¨Sally Sally a hundred times. Why didn't you hear me when I called? Why didn't you tell them to leave me alone? The one who grabbed me by the arm, he wouldn't let me go. He said I love you, Spanish girl, I love you, and pressed his sour mouth to mine.”(Red Clowns) It tells about what happened and all but this wasn't her fault. This …show more content…
Underage really and taken advantage of. In the chapter the first job an older man took advantage of her ¨would I please give him a birthday kiss. I thought I would because he was so old and just as I was about to put my lips on his cheek, he grabs my face with both hands and kisses me hard on the mouth and doesn't let go.¨ he uses the fact that she was young and dumb to his advantage. The next example is from the paragraph Linoleum Roses “She sits at home because she is afraid to go outside without his permission. She looks at all the things they own: the towels and the toaster, the alarm clock and the drapes. She likes looking at the walls, at how neatly their corners meet, the linoleum roses on the floor, the ceiling smooth as wedding cake.” he married a 7th grader because she was pretty is what it boils down to. He treats her like an animal and she cant do anything really she just wanted to
Growing up on Mango Street, girls had to take two steps backward to take one forward. Just like ballroom dancing, women let men take the lead and sacrifice an extra step to continue moving on the floor. When Sally escaped from her father and married the marshmallow salesman, she had to give up her youth and femininity.
Judgement is a very frequent occurrence in today’s world. It usually isn’t an encouraging judgement though. Throughout the book, The House on Mango Street, the message of judgement of others being cruel is revealed. This isn’t just in Esperanza, the main character, but everyone in the book. It is important that everyone in the book progresses and matures as a person because, it causes everyone to become more together. This all proves the claim of, The House on Mango Street portrays an aspect of maturity by showing that what people imagine about others is often not how they truly act and are as a person, how they grow as a person, and what they strive to become.
Have you ever heard of a poor child who has lived in a very uncomfortable home and didn’t have great wealth? In The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, this is the problem. In The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros Esperanza Cordero is the main character. “I want to be like the waves on the sea, like the clouds in the wind, but I’m me. One day I’ll jump out of my skin. I’ll shake the sky like a hundred violins” (60). In the story “The House on Mango Street”, the author Sandra Cisneros uses sentences full of imagery, metaphors, and word games, to show how self definition is a result of the people and places surrounding you. This is represented throughout the book when Esperanza wants to change her name, living in a male dominated society, and when she wishes for a new home.
Which is almost equivalent to a 75 year old dating a 9 year old, and in any time era is considered disgusting, sad, and most importantly a crime. The writer feels no type of sympathy when saying all of this, and is clearly looking at the situation from a “real life” prospective. It almost seems like he is getting a bit of a joy when writing by just looking at the vocabulary he uses. As well as the metaphors and constant over exaggeration that he uses. Not only that, the writer uses pictures to make that particular part of the scene seem more
“Born Bad” is the vignette I chose to address from The House on Mango Street. I didn’t find it to be significant at first because of the style of writing the author uses. I’ve not read any books using little vignettes as chapters. This style of writing makes me feel like I am reading about situations that seem random and disconnected. Esperanza was born on the evil day, what does this really have to do with her being a woman and not fitting in on Mango Street? Lucy, Rachel, and Esperanza made fun of Aunt Lupe the day she died, a sad event but what does that have do with her being a foreigner on Mango Street?
This quote intrigues me because it makes me connect to the author about life today. In this chapter Cathy shows who the truly is as a person. She thinks that just because Rachel and Lucy “smell” or look different than she does that Esperanza should not be friends with them. She does this quite often. I can infer this because of the author’s use of a simile. Cathy makes fun of her neighbors trying to act like she is better than them in a way. However, I think this quote shows Esperanzas true self. No matter what Cathy says about Rachel and Lucy, she likes them and no matter what they look like, she wants to be friends with them. This is a lot like today's society. There are some people who judge people on their looks, but, like Esperanza, there
