This book is full of themes, literary devices and also talks about how the government — in this case the Capitol — oppresses their citizens.

The Hunger Games (2012) is a film that demonstrates this through amplifying how the power of the rich members in a polarised society are taking control of the poor and separating them in different districts which create specific social rankings. The Hunger Games is an event hosted every year by the Capitol of Panem, where a randomly chosen boy and girl both need to represent each of the twelve districts that the capitol is composed of. When Katniss little sister, Prim, is chosen to be the representative for District twelve, Katniss volunteers to take her place and fight along her male counterpart, Peeta. The reason I choose this book for my book report is because Katniss is not your typical 16 year old girl. Not only is she her family’s provider but she’s also skillful, strong, rebellious, and unsentimental heroine. These are characteristics that society would mostly link to a 16 year old boy rather than a girl.

This first book introduces the fight to the end battle known as the Hunger Games. This battle takes one male and one female between the ages of twelve and eighteen from each of the twelve districts, totaling twenty-four “tributes” (Newsmakers, Detroit:Gale. The competitors battle to the final death, hoping to stay alive and reap benefits for their respective district. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are the main characters and they are forced to fight for District twelve. Katniss’ little sister, Primrose who is nicknamed “Prim”, is originally drawn to fight, but Katniss volunteers in her place.

In the Hunger Games, we are introduced to a country called Panem. The country of Panem is divided into twelve different districts and the Capitol, where the government resides. Each district has their own different specializations and they have distinctive economies. The government regulates the trade and each district rely on trade from each other district and the Capitol for the goods they don 't produce. All of the districts and the Capitol is interdependent.

The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. Katniss, the girl, is part of District 12, the poorest part of this fictional country, and to feed her family, she must break the law and go to the woods to hunt for food. When her mother becomes too depressed to function, she becomes the primary caretaker of her mother and 12-year-old sister, Primrose. When Primrose is picked to be a contestant in the games, Katniss steps in for her, knowing her sister will not survive. It is considered an honor to be chosen if you live in Districts 1 and 2, where contestants are properly trained, but those in District 12 are untrained, aware it is a morally wrong game and usually die in the first day.

Peeta is the other “tribute “from district 12 who joins Katniss for the games. In the chapter, a revolutionary fire is portrayed and it is evident that still, many Americans cannot identify with it (Collins 3).

The novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is about an event that’s happening live on television where the people in the Capitol selects a boy and girl between the age of twelve and eighteen from each district of Panem to fight against each other in a game of survival where they are forced to fight until death. The person who wins gets a new house for their families with food and they become wealthy and famous. Katniss, the protagonist, is a 16-year-old girl that find out that her younger sister, Prim, was chosen to compete with a boy named Peta. Katniss being the strong- willed teenager volunteer to take her sister’s place. Instead of fighting to the death, Peta and Katniss decide to fake a romantic relationship between each other to manipulate the game and Capitol politicians to become joint winner of THE HUNGER GAMES.

Most of the book takes place at the arena in which the Hunger Games are in a different arena. This year, the Games take place in an arena in which there is a lake, streams, wooded areas, and a field in which Katniss and almost all of the other tributes are afraid to enter.
