The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins: Character Analysis

Katniss Everdeen Wouldn’t Have Won Katniss Everdeen; from District 12 would not have been able to win the Hunger Games without the help from a few of the tributes from the other districts. Katniss wouldn’t have been able to stay alive without help from Haymitch and her sponsors, Peeta; also from District 12, Rue and Thresh; from District 11. Without the other tributes Katniss and Peeta would not have been the winners of the 74th Hunger Games. Haymitch and Katniss’ Sponsors helped her along the experience through the games. Haymitch trained Katniss and Peeta and prepared them to enter the Hunger Games.

In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character and protagonist is 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, a strong and selfless young woman who is far more mature than her age suggests. As the main provider for her family after her father died, Katniss had to become responsible and resourceful at a young age, which forced her to participate in rebellious behavior in order to keep her family alive. She is an unselfish and protective character, putting herself in danger in order to keep the ones she loves safe, especially for her little sister Primrose. Katniss and Peeta have to work even harder to overcome the bias against them and win the hearts of the sponsors and the crowd. Being as poor as they are comes with some benefits and some disadvantages. They have been under fed most of their lives which means they are skinny and weak compared to the other tributes. Living in district 12 also gives them the natural sense of survival. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting to survive which is basically what the hunger games are. Peeta also uses skills from his trade, like his cake decorating, to give him an upper hand in the games. Just like in their everyday lives Katniss and Peeta are spending every waking moment during the games fighting to survive. Because of the social class system set up by the Capitol people are treated very unfairly based on where they were born.

The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins delineates that there are times when people believe that all hope is lost but only those who are strong will persevere through their darkest moments. Suzanne Collins portrays the theme throughout the novel with the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, as she struggles to endure her daily life and the annual Hunger Games. Collins displays the prodigious amount of persistence of Katniss Everdeen and her comrade, Peeta Mellark, which allows them to survive throughout the Hunger Games.

Imagine living in a world where man hunts man for sport or are made to kill each other in a publicly televised event. These are the world's that the characters Rainsford and Katniss live in. In the book A Most Dangerous Game the character Rainsford finds himself on an island where a man named General Zaroff hunts him and many more before him, for sport. In the movie The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen lives in a world where people are split up into twelve different districts. The government takes two people, a boy and a girl, from each district and throws them into an arena to fight to the death. Rainsford and Katniss both possess the skills and traits of a true survivor. These skills and traits are using intelligence over strength, showing compassion to others, and triumphing over those who only use strength.

Each year there is one male and one female chosen from each district to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Prime, Katniss, Gale, and Peeta are all from district 12 and when the time comes to pick a participant, Prime, Katniss’s sister is chosen. Katniss then volunteers to take over for her beloved sister, and Peeta is chosen from the boys side. They are then rushed to the capital to start their training for the games. Peeta works at the bakery so he is good at camouflage and throwing heavy things. Katniss if very good at archery and with a bow. Their job is to get sponsors while they are at the capital. When they go in to be evaluated, Katniss shocks the sponsors by shooting an arrow into the apple in a man’s hand when they underestimated her. That earned her a very high evaluation score and more sponsors. Peeta then claims to have a crush on Katniss in hopes of making her look more desirable to get more sponsors as well. While being pitted against tributes that have trained for this for their entire lives, people from the capital and all over are watching the games on a television. Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.

Dwight Lyman Moody once said, " Character is what you are in the dark." This means that a person's true character is brought forward when they go through challenges. I agree with this quote, when people go through hard times the unimportant things are stripped away, and they have to learn to grow and adapt despite the obstacles they face. In the book "The Hunger Games," Suzanne Collins shows how some people's challenges change them for the better, other characters don't know how to cope and take longer to adapt, and how people's reactions differed from each others.

While competing in the Hunger Games, Katniss is unsure if Peeta is on her side or not because he betrays her and joins the Careers; plotting to team up and kill the weak. This make Katniss extremely confused, causing her to be uncertain of whether or not she will be able to kill Peeta since he is her supposed star-crossed lover. She also debates with herself because she cannot decide if she is in love with Gale or Peeta. During the Hunger Games, Katniss becomes friends with Rue through the mocking jay pin. Rue is killed, but Katniss remembers her by using the wisdom that she learned from Rue.

Since Haymitch is Katniss and Peeta’s mentors he needs to help them and give them tips and tricks. Haymitch was in the Hunger Games and won, when Peeta asked to give them tips or something to help them survive Haymitch told them to stay alive at first, but he was joking, what he told them to be liked and get along with people to get sponsors. Sponsors can help getting a good score and help you win. Sponsors can't exactly help you win, but it helps your district and family. When they arrived to the destination of the Hunger Games people were waiting outside excited to meet the winners, Peeta decided to listen to Haymitch advice he waved and smiled at everyone he seen he was getting good at it Haymitch was proud of him. Firstly, symbol is one of the good literary devices that reveal Katniss always works hard physically in the game. For instance, Katniss’s dress that burns on the fire symbolizes Katniss’s fighting spirit. The reader knows Katniss is “the girl who was on fire” (Collins 78). Consequently, Katniss never gives up in the game despite she often has many difficulties in a hard situation. Likewise, smile is another literary device which shows Peeta is also very diligent in a psychological way. For example, the reader can know Peeta tries to become optimistic in the game even if he is in a bad situation, because when “Peeta wriggles back inside his fact lit up like the sun” (Collins 302). In the beginning, Katniss is living the hard life of her district. She goes to school and hunts so that her family has food. She has a younger sister named Prim and a mother, however it is time for the reaping which is when the Capitol picks names out of a bucket for one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts to participate in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death tournament where the winner gets fame and fortune.
