In a place that was once known as United States of America, is now known as Panem, which is divided up in to twelve cruel districts. Forced by the nation’s capitol, one boy and one girl shall be chosen randomly to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Hunger Games, also known as the deathly journey when put in to an unknown place and requires you to fight until you are the last one standing. This may be seen as an enjoyable entertainment to those residing in the nations capitol; but to Katniss Everdeen, a courageous teenager, it is a death sentence that cannot be avoided.

Another important idea that Katniss makes the audience think of is Love. She helps the audience see this because the main driving point of the novel is Katniss’s love for Prim. This is the reason she volunteered for her at the reaping and why she is in the Hunger Games in the first place. This love is shown when she buys Prim her goat, “She (Prim) was so excited she started crying and laughing all at once.” This tells us that Katniss was willing to spend her money on a goat for Prim that she could’ve spent on something else that would’ve given them better prospects or saved the money. Instead, she chose to give her sister something that she could look after, love and give her lasting memories of fun and happiness. Throughout the book characteristics of a dystopia society are revealed. From districts starving, living in poverty, being killed for trying to escape to somewhere better and being forced to do things they do not want to do. The beginning of the book on page three, starts with the main character Katniss Everdeen assuming her sister left their bed for their mothers’ because of nightmares caused by the reaping. Not only is she her family’s provider but she’s also skillful, strong, rebellious, and unsentimental heroine. These are characteristics that society would mostly link to a 16 year old boy rather than a girl.

In the games, the entire nation of Panem, which make up the twelve districts and the Capitol, watch as these kids fight each other to the death until only one victor is victorious. Leaders that reside in the wealthy Capitol, the body of elites that makes up the government, use the games to flaunt and strengthen their power over the districts by means of oppression and dehumanization to keep them in line.

The Hunger Games was no exception. If someone did not read the book, they should expect to be very confused during the movie. The movie left a lot of important parts out and did not explain why things were the way they were. Putting the gaps in the storyline aside, the acting portrayed from Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth was well done and overall the movie won 34 awards and was nominated for 43.
