Have you ever been in pain, whether physically or emotionally? Well a lot of time this can be seen in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is about 24 people being put in an arena every year and it gets broadcasted to the whole nation of Panem. The theme of this book is suffering as entertainment. This theme can be seen in the characters and what they say. An example of this is seen when katniss, “The fire was just to get us moving, now the audience will get some real fun.” The meaning of this quote tis to explain how the gamemakers got tired of nobody fighting so they needed to start a fire to get the players closer together so they would fight. This shows the theme because the Hunger Games were setup to force people to battle to the death and the Capitols people are forced to watch it. Finally the theme of this book can be seen in everyday life. Some examples of this is when Katniss needs to do several things to change and become more prettier. On page 61 Katniss talks about how the people from the Capitol were altering her appearance. “R-i-i-i-p! I grit my teeth as venia, a woman with aqua hair and gold tattoos above her eyebrows, yanks a fabric from my leg tearing out the hair beneath it. “Sorry!” she pipes in her silly Capitol accent. “You’re just so hairy!” Katniss is talking about how the Capitol is changing how her appearance is and altering it for others to see meanwhile she has to suffer pain for the beauty and enjoyment of others. This is also seen in real life when peoples bodies are altered in painful ways so they could look more appealing to others. Another example of this theme is shown on page 98 when Katniss says “The Hunger Games aren’t a beauty contest, but the best looking tributes always seem to pull in more sponsor’s.” When Katniss says this she means that beauty plays a role in getting sponsors which are important for supplies in the Hunger Games. This represents the theme because in order to look beautiful and appear to others, Katniss had to have her body altered in painful ways and suffered just so people
