Executive Summary
The industry of music is affected profoundly by the innovation of music digitalized for the past twenties years roughly. In specific, the every stage of value chain of music industry have been affected by the expansion of the internet worldwide and the content of music digitalization (Bourreau, Gensollen and Moreau 2008).
The digital music consumption replaces the traditional physical copies continually in general. About amount of 25% of global music revenue proves the usage of digital products has acerbated it pace dramatically (IFPI 2009), it can be predicted that in the future the digital music carriers may take over the hard copies of music such as CDs and tapes (Shayo and Guthrie, 2005).
This paper aims to identify and evaluate the impact of digitalization on organizations in music industry. The case selects a Chinese local traditional music retailer Big World who engaged with Chinese market more than 15 years in East region of China, sold physical music such as CDs and Tapes in their music retail stores and someplace where rented in a fixed area in local big bookstore. It was one of the earlier retailers who have run physic music selling business since 1999 and then started to open amount 40 franchises across East of China from the year of 2000 to 2010. Production, distribution and sales of music have been affected dramatically within the last 10 years along with artists, composers, and technicians. Most of the changes have been great for consumers, but vastly negative for professionals in the music industry, however a few artists have found ways to adapt to the changing atmosphere of digitally downloaded music and use it to their advantage. We’ve seen music change form from physical, tangible products like records and CD’s to electronic single tracks stored in an invisible cloud. Now, anyone with talent can post a video of themselves and become an internet sensation, only to then receive a deal with a label to continue growing their career. The issue is, with the Internet came digital downloading, and with the growing popularity of digital downloading came illegal downloading, known as Digital Piracy, which has affected the music industry greatly. From the small CD store owner to the Artist on stage, everyone has and continues to be affected by the growing popularity of digital downloading services. Artists, producers, and songwriters lose an estimated 12.5 Billion USD every year to illegal digital music services. Further, the economic impact from [digital downloading] is an estimated loss of 2+ Billion USD (Storrs, 1). This money affects the “little guys” in the industry and the average worker within the industry.
