I chose a news article about the human environmental impact on animals. We have made some changes by adding animals to the Red list, which has caused more exposure of the animals that are more at risk at extinction. Many reason for this decline in animals is because of human activity. The more people come together the more change they can do for the environment. While other differ in opinion, which disregard animal moral status.(Kantian Ethics)
Section: Background
Many problems in environmental ethics talk about concepts of moral status and moral considerability. “Many things can have instrumental or intrinsic value yet no moral status that is, they may not deserve our direct moral concern”(Vaughn, p.452). For something to have meaning to someone it doesn't need to have moral status, but in this case many believe that animals do have moral status, while others do not. Another consideration of moral status is the question of lesser or greater regarding other animals moral status does that play a role in our choice for the species who are headed to extinction. While moral consideration for a suitable candidate for moral respect is hard to identify. There is a notion in which it states that humans are the only living being that have moral standing which is called anthropocentrism. In this view nature is considered a tool, which takes the stance as we have it for the enhancement of people day to day lives. There is also a stance were animals both human and nonhumans have moral
Many species that exists today are becoming endangered to extinction. In the past era where humans did not exist, extinction occurred due to natural causes. On this present time however, extinction of species are threatened by humans’ existence. Humans are the only moral agent; in which, it has the intellectual capacity that animals and plants do not have. Thus, humans are powerful and dominate over any species. Many practices that humans do such as: tree logging, environment pollution, exploitation of animals and others has led to many species being endangered to extinction. Thus, humans have a moral obligation to preserve endangered species for such reasons focus on
In addition to providing the animal with shelter, and necessary supplies the natural parks can bring back a whole species from near extinction. In the passage “The Impact of Animal Protection” it directly states that keeping animals protected has proven to be beneficial and increase the population of endangered animals. Bringing animals back from near extinction can be a difficult task, however it is very beneficial. Animal protection is also used to help control animal population from getting out of control. These programs have brought back plenty of species such as black footed ferrets, California condors, red wolves, and golden lion tamarins. (Do Animals Lose in Zoos?) The community would never get to see these amazing creatures if these
Animal Agriculture accounts for much of the issues in our environment today. Most would not think of animal agriculture being the main reason for pollution or greenhouse gasses. The majority of people would agree that the fossil fuels that come from cars are the number one producer for greenhouse gasses. Well think again. I am going to tell you how animal agriculture has affected our atmosphere in a negative way by emitting a large amount of GHGs, and in turn effecting our climate and speeding up the global warming process. Animal agriculture refers to an industrial livestock production, the management of farm animals such as cattle, poultry, and in some cases fish, are bred, fed and cared for in a way that is advantageous to humans, also known as factory farming. Animals behavior, genetic qualities and are altered to fit the mold of a human. This process requires a lot of energy, land and water.
I chose an article called ‘’People Crowding Wild Horses Off The Beach’’ written by the McClatchy-Tribune, adapted by Newsela staff published on September 3rd 2014. The article is about the issues around the fight to preserve the Corolla wild mustangs who live in Corolla, North Carolina. Some experts think that the mustangs came to the island on a ship that crashed near the shore, and the mustangs swam to the island about 500 years ago. The Corolla wild mustangs are thought by some people to be pests because they roam around and are disturbing the habitat of other animals like sea turtles and birds. People were running the horses over with cars and horses were having many health problems because of inbreeding. This led to the creation of a fund
Why should moral agents regard wild living things in the natural world as possessing inherent worth? To answer this question we must first take into account the fact that, when rational, autonomous agents subscribe to the principles of moral consideration and intrinsic value and so conceive of wild living things as having that kind of worth, such agents are adopting a certain ultimate moral attitude toward the natural world. This is the attitude I call “respect for nature.” It parallels the attitude of respect for persons in human ethics. When we adopt the attitude of respect for persons as the proper (fitting, appropriate) attitude to take toward all persons as persons, we consider the fulfillment of the basic interests of each individual
The United States Environmental policy within the last 25 years has changed considerably due to events and politics. Things such as global warming, air pollution, water pollution, etc... has gotten the attention of more and more American citizens as well as celebrities and has created numerous environmental activist groups. These drastic changes have also brought about movies being made and telling the tale of how these changes will affect humans and the environment in the long term. One of the changes that President Trump is slowly trying to implement is eliminating the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). (Green, 2017) The purpose of this agency is to create and enforce laws passed by Congress that protect humans and the environment. (Green,
The topic I covered was the testing of animals in laboratories and factories. The issue of animal testing was first brought to public attention by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA. PETA and other humane society organisations began to bring attention to this issue around the 1950’s, when the economy boom was continuing to grow rapidly. At this time globalization was beginning to become very
The strongest pro animal rights answer to this question would be that non-human animals have exactly the same moral status as humans and
Oxford English dictionary defines moral as “of or relating to human character or behavior considered as right and wrong,” and obligation as “an act or course of action to which a person is morally or legally bound.” Accordingly, the term “moral obligations” can be interpreted as duties that arise out of humans’ consideration of right and wrong. In other words, it is up to humans to judge and decide whether or not certain actions toward non-human animals are right or wrong, based on the moral standards we establish and are commonly adopted. In regard to the commonly debated question, “do humans have moral obligations to non-human animals,” the answer is yes, but in a restricted sense – that is, our moral obligations to other humans are our priority.
proper role in respecting the rights of non-human animals, all natural human biases must be put
Nearly everything that a human does is in response to the environment. Our lives are defined by what is around us and what we find in front of us, whether this means accepting, dealing with or changing it. This has been the pattern since primates first stood up and became Homo erectus, and has continued until we considered ourselves doubly wise. The shape of the land affected where humans moved. Weather was something with which to contend. Fire affected humans until they conquered it – and herein lies the core of the relationship. The earth affects humans, and humans affect it back, viewing characteristics and patterns as problems and challenges, and finding a solution.
Different types of animals are adapted to the environment. It explains why people need to use furnaces, heated blankets, and other devices to survive the freezing cold winter, animals live through the four seasons – especially winter – even if the temperature is several degrees below zero.
What is our human responsibility to Planet Earth and its non-human inhabitants? As we acknowledge the millions of different animals surrounding us it may seem odd that humans, out of all species are the most advanced. Just because humans may feel as if they are superior to animals doesn’t give us the right to destroy the well-being of these creatures. Throughout the Bible from the Book of Genesis to the Book of Revelations, animals are considered to be an exalted place in creation. The Book of Genesis juxtaposes the appearance of humans and with other living creatures at the dawn of creation. Leading up until the last book in the bible, the Book of Revelation, God consistently had humans and nonhuman creatures circled around His throne where both would eventually unite in heaven. In fact, the Bible proclaims that both animals and human beings are living souls. Not to take away from the divine significance of Man’s covenantal relationship with God, God covenanted with all animals as well. God said to Noah, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you” (Genesis 9:9-10). The Old Testament discloses that God’s designed plan for us humans are to act more as stewards in relations with animals rather than cruelty and mistreatment. Imagine living with an impairment that makes it challenging to function and complete tasks. Anxiety, depression, and paralysis are a few of the impairments that affect today’s population. These disabilities place limitations on potential accomplishments and create an abundance of stress. The comfort of animals, whether common pets, therapy animals, or service animals, has the capacity to alleviate this stress. This knowledge can formulate impactful progress in different areas of therapy, contributing to a less anxious society. Since pets and animals used for support provide companionship and possess characteristics which support the physical and emotional health needs specific to their owner, they should be used to diminish the various stresses of life and assist those with impairments.
The raise of animals for food has a negative impact on the environment and the public health. When cattle is raise for human consumption, many natural resources are invested such as land, crops, and water but the earth received in return methane, carbon dioxide, animal waste, etc. Once cattle is turned into beef and consumed as food health issues starts to raised. The consumption of red meat is link to cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. Weston see ethics as a way to challenge people life style, what they do, how they live, including their diets. American diet often finds it hard to imagine no longer eating meat. Still, say the critics, familiarity alone does not necessarily make anything morally acceptable (107). The fact that previous generations diets would rely on animal flesh to survive because of the unstable weather that does not mean nowadays society is unable to develop sustainable technology to produce food. The purpose of this paper is to describe the negative impact that the consumption of any type of meat and others animal products causes to the environment and to the public health. Also it would explore the alternative way to stop negative effects by switching to plant based diet or at least reduced the consumption of it. People are looking for a human way to consumed meat but there is not human way to kill an animal. In any case, the whole issue is a useful reminder that ethics is not just a call to judge some occasional but extreme question
