The Impact Of Internet On Students And Their Academic Performance

With the emergence of the Internet, its impact has been significantly influencing daily lives throughout the years. One controversy that has caught the attention of researchers is the integration of the Internet, more specifically the use of social media, into the school curriculum and daily lives of students. Researchers, teachers, parents, and the media are trying to understand what effects the Internet has and how it affects students as it is rapidly being a part of their lives. Researchers focusing in this certain area of the Internet and education have both simultaneously discovered results that show positive and negative correlations between the Internet and use of social media with students and their academic performances (Al-rahmi, Othman, Mohd, and Musa 2014; Leung 2015; Chen, Hsiao, Chern, and Chen 2015; Paul, Baker, and Cochran 2012; Peon and Lwin 2011 Young 2006). According to a recent survey of 3000 students from across the US, the usage of the Internet and mainly social media is proportionally larger for populations in higher education, amounting to 90% for Facebook, and with this in mind we can say that the Internet and social media has become part of a student’s daily life (Dahlstrom, de boor, Grunwald, and Vockley 2011). Research has also indicated that there is some form of relationship between the use of the Internet and social media with one’s academic performance (Paul et al. 2012).
