The Importance Of A College Education

During their high school career, students may begin to question the importance of a college education. They might find themselves asking, “Why is it important to go to college?” The answer is that, more than ever, attending college provides opportunities for graduates which are not as widespread to those who have not received a higher education.

I know the importance of obtaining a college education, but more exciting to me were the on the job opportunities to improve processes within the department. The flexibility of my team lead position at Mass. Eye & Ear was what really helped me thrive; I saw a problem, I came up with a solution and produced results. I understand the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. I created flow charts for team members to demonstrate their daily tasks effectively. I created e-mail templates and documents for the team to streamline their processes. I used a range of tools such as Microsoft Word and Excel to execute my ideas.

The decision of whether or not to attend college can be difficult, especially given the tremendous costs associated with tuition, books, and campus living. Moreover, getting a good job or earning an attractive income is not necessarily guaranteed with a college degree. The decision of whether or not to attend college must come from within, and must transcend thoughts about money. For me, going to college represents a genuine personal feat. There are three main reasons why college education is important to me. First, I would be the first person in my generation to receive a higher education. My going to college therefore represents a new precedent in my family. Second, I love learning and want the opportunity to expand my personal and academic horizons. Third, the career path I have embarked on is one that requires a college education in order to succeed. Therefore, a college education is important to me because of personal and professional reasons.

Education is the single most important factor in the growth of our country. Specifically, higher education paves a future and provides opportunity for students that attend college and gives them a shot at a career. 50 years ago, college was strictly for the elite, high class Americans. Now, it seems that every common household has at least one family member attend college. But with the increasing drop out rate today, students seem less interested in learning at college and their priorities change from their original goal of graduating. A college degree gets you many things in life such as better financial success. As college costs continue to rise, more and more students are discouraged from furthering their education and reaching their capabilities to the fullest. In today’s society, a college education is essential for a good career. Based off a Edward Jones survey, 83% of Americans say they cannot afford the expense of a college education. Growing up in public schools, college has always been slipped into conversations. Especially in high school, our teachers are preparing us for college. However, they are not preparing us for our future careers or how to obtain a household income, just simply for us to attend college. We are taught about the importance of college, but never warned about the cost of tuition and how to pay for it. In my own personal experience I was not taught how to pay for college but to just go, just figure it out and go. On average, an in-state college is $10,000 a year. The average american family has an income of around $55,000, however, the average family also spends around $60,000 a year on bills and necessary items. With this being said, are our tuition rates reasonable?

In the millennial generation, there is a debate on if college is worth it or not. The debate is very controversial and many will say that college is not worth it; they will argue that college is not worth it because the cost of college is too high. After all, why invest all that money and time in a college education, without possessing strategic and critical thoughts towards the future? Also, generally speaking, people tend to focus in on academic aspects like grades, grade point averages, and test scores when selecting a seemingly efficient candidate for a graduate or even a job position. In those terms, there is practically no exaggerating the fact that grades are essential in order to be of high regard in the academic community and possibly be eligible for more job opportunities. Thus, to secure a beneficial future, one should dedicate themselves to curricular/academic activities during their time in an undergraduate program.

Some of the ideas may be pleasant for college students, others may bring despair and unwanted decisions just to get a college education. Both sides have impacted me into thinking of what I should do during the 4 years of college that I will be going through. Therefore, the decisions I make will become the outcome of what type of experience I will have during the 4 years.
