       In the play “The Importance of Being Earnest”, Oscar Wilde focused on the Victorian Age by mocking the Victorian principles and ideals. Wilde utilized satire and mockery through the character to make fun of their culture, principles, behaviors, and morals of the Victorians. Wilde also used the characters in the play to demonstrate the political, social, and religious views in the late 1900’s.

Oscar Wilde’s play entitled “The Importance of Being Earnest” illustrates the concept of dual personality, fantasy, love, and lies. Jack, Algernon, Gwendolyn, and Cecily all live in lies. They are manipulated by their fantasies and desire for perfect relationship and love. Jack, the protagonist in the play, is the root of lies because of his imaginary brother named Earnest. Algernon uses the name to win Cecily, while Gwendolyn and Cecily are both fascinated by this name because it expresses strength and perfection of manhood. Some people will do anything to escape reality. The idea of living a storybook life excites them. They want to face the good, but not the bad. However, a few of those people take the charade to new levels. They disrupt the lives of everyone around them and try to run from the consequences. Those people are selfish. In Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, the reader watches the downfall of a Victorian clique. One of the play’s main characters, Algernon, has decided that he deserves a break from reality. Unsurprisingly, this mindset gets Algy into trouble at times. Algernon earns the well-deserved title of the most shallow and static character through his attitude towards marriage, his perception of others, and his opinion of himself.

One might believe that honesty is one of the building blocks of a society and is what initiates trust between people; furthermore, the Victorian era was a time period in British history where rules and morals appeared to be strict. Honesty is not valued throughout the play because some of the characters felt to need to appear as if they represented the strict morals that were common throughout the time period.

In this comedic drama, focusing on and analyzing certain minor characters leads to a more effective interpretation of the messages attempting to be portrayed to the audience. Additionally, interpreting the roles of the lower class servants allows the readers to internalize the desperate need for social reform that the author felt at the time period. Finally, the entire concept of Bunburyism, or masquerading as an alternate persona, satirizes the hypocrisy of the Victorian Era.

A person’s name and position in society are significantly important for the upper class, due to the fact that if one were to marry into the family, a key member of the family would judge the person by their social class and the family name they carry to see if they are worthy to being a part of their lineage. In the play, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” a person's social class is highly admired. The main characters are high in society and are falsely appearing to live up to great expectations. In Oscar Wilde’s play, the theme of the social class is extensively explored through the characters, although they are living double-lives.

Correspondingly, in this victorian era society the character live in, it is ingrained in the minds of individuals that marriage has everything to do with status; or in this case, the name. One character in particular that caught my attention was Algernon Moncrieff. I believe this because through the use of deception, Wilde manages to contribute to the work as a whole through his bravado attitude, comedic relief, and the honest threaded into his lies.

He was arrested a year after writing The Importance of Being Earnest on charges of indecency, with the fact of his homosexuality in mind (Staff). Funnily enough, The Importance of Being Earnest was a well liked play in the time area, even though it was fraught with “unseemly” behaviors in regards to the sexes. In the Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde dares to convey a message of resistance against social norms while criticizing the social hierarchy through the display of an utterly absurd societal crisis.

Within seconds of the play opening, Wilde’s use of Algernon portrays a sense of his own morals.
