Most people fantasize about their dream destination for their weddings, but what about dream destinations for one’s birth? The United States has made its way on the top of the list for immigrant mothers looking to give birth on American soil, in order to achieve citizenship. This growing trend is known as birth tourism, and is immoral, unjust, fraudulent, and disrespectful to Americans and the value and sacredness regarding the constitution and the 14th amendment. It is also contemptuous and unfair to the millions of refugees and immigrants who are turned away every day.
The United States collectively is targeted by immigrants; however Southern California, Miami, and New Jersey has seen the most productivity regarding birth tourism. “In Southern California city officials discovered makeshift maternity wards, and specifically in Los Angeles there were dozens of birthing hotels in and around downtown Los Angeles” (Feere). According to Fox News, Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center located in New Jersey has been under scrutiny due to marketing citizenship through a birth tourism program they have labeled as ‘AmeriMama’. NBC has also reported about birth tourism with a recent article discussing the FBI raiding ‘Miami Mama’, a business running since 2009 in Hallandale Beach catering to Russian women.
However, Russian women are not the only demographic participating in birth tourism.
Contrary to this, others believe that illegal immigrants threaten the United States HealthCare System, Madeline Pelner Cosman stated, “In 1994, 74987 anchor babies in California hospital maternity unit cost $215 million and constituted 36 percent of
The first day in the United States is one of the best day and most thrilling days in my life. My father and my older sister move to Malaysia to get a job and support our family due to financial difficulty and lack of job opportunity in Burma. After a few years, my father and my sister were able to enter as immigrant and they were sent to the United States as immigrants through United Nation. After being apart with my father and my sister for more than a decade, my parents decide to move completely to America where more opportunities are available for a brighter future. My family faces many obstacles during the process of migrating to America. Despite all the struggle that are on our way, my family finally arrives in the United States and face major changes in life.
Pongskon Bupphasawan Professor Sharifian Government 2305-75427 June 30, 2017 The Fourteenth Amendment Introduces a Passive Citizenship The 14th Amendment authorizes all the people who is born on the U.S. soil automatically get an U.S. citizenship. Therefore, the 14th Amendment brings thousands of foreigners who desire American residency to give their children birth in the U.S. There are no laws to reject pregnant women to come to the U.S. Foreigners believe they would get a better healthcare and many of them believe to seek American Dream. 1 According to the “Born In The USA: Why Chinese ‘Birth Tourism’ Is Booming In California”, “Chinese women are flocking to the United States — California, in particular — to have children who will grow up as American citizens,” and it reports that “Chinese births in the U.S, but estimates by industry publications projected a total of 60,000 for 2014” (Sheehan). The 14th Amendment should require more process to give a U.S. citizen from birth tourism by requiring the tourists parents enroll in a program that teach about U.S. government, and they will know the duty of American is a must for Americans.
Immigration is both a domestic issue and global concern. It involves economics, politics, and culture. Unlike other current issues, it has been at the center of the American experience for hundreds of years (Tirman, John). Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants from around the world, come to the United States. These immigrants have many different motivations as to why they leave their home country; but as currents events indicate, it is injustice, poverty, and violence in their own country that generally make people move to save themselves and to ensure a better future for their families. Many of these people believe the United States is the best place to go, because there is more freedom, protection, and benefits,
Interested by the success of several immigrant friends, journalist Claudia Kolker observed various customs of the immigrants and their families, which they brought along with them to the United States. She put together her observations in her book “The Immigrant Advantage: What We Can Learn from Newcomers to America about Health, Happiness, and Hope,” which gives a detailed account of the traditions and customs of the immigrants residing in the United States. Though the customs are unfamiliar to a majority of the Americans, Kolker believes that the customs help to understand why the immigrant families tend to be happier and healthier, even though they hail from poor and grievous homelands, unlike Native Americans. In the book “In The Immigrant Advantage: What We Can Learn from Newcomers to America about Health, Happiness, and Hope,” Kolker talks about various customs, including the Vietnamese hui or Money Club, the Mexican tradition of parenting a new mother for 40 days post birth, the South Asian custom of “assisted” marriage, and the Korean after-school programs.
While across the United States exists considerable numbers of birth tourism, there is one state in particular that research shows to have the greatest activity. 1 Statistics highlights, “more than two-thirds of all births in Los Angeles public hospitals, and more than half of all births in that city, and nearly 10 percent of all births in the nation in recent years, have been to mothers who are here illegally” (Will). 2 Los Angeles is seeing high activity for birth tourism due to package plans available through agencies, “profit-seeking and sometimes illegal organizations that arrange accommodations and hospital visits for groups of Chinese women” (Brush). Immigrants from across other countries come to settle in the Unites States for better opportunity’s and a high percentage are from Latin America. 3 In fact, “the U.S. 4 is typically centered around people from
Many laws, regulations, and policies are tailored specifically for children due to their minority status. There are also special standards when dealing with children and immigration. There are generally three different ways children get involved with immigration. The first being, children are raised in the United States without ever obtaining citizenship. Secondly, “anchor babies” which refers to children that are born in the US to undocumented parents. Lastly, many children seek refuge in the US without a parent accompanying them. This paper will look in depth on how the United States treats youth who were raised within its borders but are not legal citizens and legislation that effects
The film No Mas Bebes shows us the case of ten women whom with the help of the lawyer Antonia Hernandez decided to take their case of violation of their rights to the court, and fight against the Los Angeles County Hospital. We can see how these women were treated differently for being immigrant Latinas and having babies here in the U.S. They are clearly the targets of the hospital because they are having “too many babies” and that can be problematic in the eyes of many people like John Tanton who firmly
Single individuals that stay in the United States do not have children right away, because that was never their intention. Since most immigrants arrive in the U.S. by themselves, they end up looking for company that many times results in marriage, children or both. Therefore, these people come to consider a permanent life in the U.S. Additionally, data from the Pew Research Center shows that more than 90% of the illegal immigrants in the United States, didn’t have children until two years after they came to the U.S.(Gomez). Though some politicians use mass media to misinform the American people, to make them believe that “Anchor Babies” are a problem for the society. Aside people that oppose immigrants and their children, many Americans constantly
Today the Society is split into three separately minded groups. In no specific ordering, the first is determined to believe that any one person born in the United States is a citizen and which means their parents should become citizens along with them. These are the ones whom obtain “birthright citizenship” (Raul). The second are firm believers in the only ones that should be citizens are the ones who go through the proper process of becoming a citizen and according to the article in “USA today,” it states that illegal immigrants are “having babies as a way to obtain citizenship,” which too many Americans “cheapens the whole idea of being American”. The last group is the “other” the ones whom are completely neutral or believe in the
Tatiana Sanchez, author of “Deported Mothers Make New Lives in Tijuana”, argues that the US immigration policy is stressing the human cost of tearing families apart to a critical and desperate situation. She is a former reporter/writer of The San Diego Union-Tribune and previously an investigative reporter with The Desert Sun in Palm Springs. Her insight on the immigration dilemma between the married couple Emma Sanchez and Michael Paulsen reveals that the immigration law automatically and severely bans applicants seeking legal status yet break the immigration laws, affecting the generations after the applicant.
With deportation of undocumented immigrants being one of the top topics in the Republican Party nominee’s (Donald Trump) campaign, we all cannot but debate the effects of such action in relation to the 6.5 million undocumented Mexican immigrants who cover over half (59%) of the total 11.3 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. With such population, it is logical to say that these are thousands of Mexican families with children born both in Mexico in the U.S. According to Bredy (2012) “Today, more than three quarters of the children of immigrants are U.S. citizens and one-third live in mixed-status families”, therefore, it is evident that about one-third of American born Mexican children are prone to suffer from parental deportation. In
Here in the Rio Grande Valley immigration has become the hit. An immigrant in my own words is someone from a different country that travels to an alternative country permanently for a better life. I belief they are many unlike reasons why people live in their country but cross to another country. Actually, I’m not in immigrant, I’m a US citizen but I have experienced many stories and seen families struggle from this situation. Nevertheless, to my own experience, some people move to the US to find better jobs, but some move to different counties to look forward not only to better their education but their children’s as well. In this research paper I will be pointing out the important factors and expectations of illegal immigrants in the US,
Does everybody think or feels the same about childbirth around the world? This question above is a question that has always been in my mind. Now that I got the opportunity of choosing a topic to do research. I decided to choose childbirth and culture. This research paper is going to talk about how different cultures and countries look a birth in an entirely different manner. Some look at birth as a battle and others as a struggle. And on some occasions, the pregnant mother could be known as unclean or in other places where the placenta is belief to be a guardian angel. These beliefs could be strange for us but for the culture in which this is being practiced is natural and a tradition. I am going to be introducing natural and c-section childbirth. And, the place of childbirth is going to be a topic in this essay. America is one country included in this research paper.
According to “Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America,” women and couples planning the birth of a child have decisions to make in variety of areas: place of birth, birth attendant(s), medication, preparedness classes, circumcision, breast feeding, etc. The “childbirth market” has responded to consumer concerns, so its’ important for prospective consumers to fully understand their options. With that being said, a woman has the choice to birth her child either at a hospital or at home. There are several differences when it comes to hospital births and non-hospital births.
