As we all know as of August 1, 2016, the new law “Campus Carry”, went into effect giving the right of a person that holds a license to carry can now carry on campus. If an individual holds a license to carry, they should provide proof when they carry on campus. When a person is identified to carry, it wouldn’t cause a scare knowing they are properly trained and registered to carry a firearm. There should be some sort of metal detectors at every entrance of all buildings. This policy could input the importance of wearing identification. There is a reason why security is in place on campus. They for one are hired to protect and serve the community. The individuals are hired for their job because they have been trained and observed for their
There is much controversy over whether or not students should be able to bring guns on college campuses. The new law, to be implemented in the year of 2016, gives students ages 21 or older to carry concealed weapons on campus. The thought of the new law puts fear in the hearts of some Americans when thinking about the safety of themselves or loved ones. While the bill has been passed, allowing guns onto a college campus should not be allowed.
One of the major heated issues with gun control has been the legislation of concealed carry on college campuses. According to Weeden’s (2017) article, “Guns on Campus,” Arkansas and Georgia have already passed bills to allow students and faculty to carry guns on campus. I can understand why states are doing this due to the amount of school shootings that have been occurring
Allowing guns on campuses has to be one of the most absurd solutions conceived to regulate safety. Firearms have no place in the hands of staff and students on campus. The idea is totally blown out of proportion because many universities actually considering concealed carry believe the impact will be less crime and more safety, but what exactly does it mean to allow a weapon on college property? People that are for campus carry argue that those with a firearm will be able to defend themselves against any incident that is bound to happen, but what happens when they pull out a gun? How will students, staff, or law enforcement react? Guns on campuses are not a good idea due to the fact students aren't fully mature enough to carry a weapon, they will become inhibited in
“Your rights shouldn’t change as you step on campus…” Crayle Vanest, Students For Concealed Carry states. If you have your concealed licenses permit you should be able to carry your firearm onto campus. I see college campuses being extremely vulnerable to mass shooting because of the lack of firearms. It is argued that college students would be dangerous if they were allowed to conceal carry on campus, and it would be more of a risk. In my opinion campuses would be safer if students were legally able to conceal carry. In order to have a conceal carry licenses you have to go to class to obtain that. If a student is of age and has their conceal carry licenses permit they shouldn’t be limited to certain places that they are able to carry their
Many Teachers are reconsidering their positions on campus as their safety comes into question. “A professor at UT Austin states that she is afraid for her students but also for herself”. Not only does it affect decisions of Professors but interferes with the Law Enforcement on our campus. With the concealed carry law now being enforced in August, why would we need our Security Guards if we can defend ourselves. People would take matters into their own hands rather than calling for help.
Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. Debate over permitting or restricting the concealed carry of a firearm on college
Third, any campus that does not allow students and faculty to protect themselves, violates their constitutional right to do so and leaves their institution open to litigation in the event that a crime is committed against a student or faculty member while on campus.
Firearms are a very profound subject to speak about due to violence and other issues behind them. College students are already aroused and stressed to do extraordinary in their courses. Would consenting untrained students to carry concealed weapons around campus be such an enticing idea, when at any moment someone could lose their mind and go on a shooting rage? One may never know what kind of background that specific being that carries a concealed firearm has. In reality no one knows what kind of effect this would have towards universities or college campuses, but it could result in a students’ academic performance. Weapons on university campuses would create a vast interference towards the education of college students; an individual might never know who is carrying a concealed weapon or what that person might organize to do. Students would be alarmed to speak up in class or anywhere around the campus for that matter. Concealed Weapon Carry should not be allowed in universities because students are immature, it would be a risky environment, and permit holders are not always lawful citizens.
We are seeing a growing number of states bringing forth campus carry to their legislation. Some states leave it up to the individual college or university to decide to allow concealed carry, while others outright ban it. However, Texas passed Senate Bill 11 which allowed for licensed gun holders to carry a concealed handgun on university grounds. Texas was the eighth state to allow concealed campus carry. Now Georgia and Tennessee are beginning to make efforts. House Bill 280 has recently passed through Georgia’s legislature and is now awaiting the Governor's approval or denial. In Tennessee, full-time employees have been able to carry concealed weapons as of July of 2016, now they are pushing to expand the law to part-time employees as well.
Therefore, concealed carry on college campuses should continue to be a Texas law because allowing students and staff to carry will help protect people and prevent crimes in and around our campus and community. Either by stopping a crime or causing people to be a more law-abiding person Campus carry will always be the way to go to make our college better and
Although eight states have passed provisions allowing concealed weapons on public campuses and several other states allow campuses to decide if they are allowed, instead colleges should take a holistic view and approach to provide a robust security program, safety training, communication network and guidance on behavior awareness for faculty and students. As States continue to pass campus carry laws the colleges continue to funnel the majority of their focus dedicated to passing the law. This has eroded and overshadowed the end result, which is to protect students and faculty. Campuses should not allow students to carry guns on campus. By providing this false sense of security it dilutes the opportunity to implement tools, train and provide strategies to improve campus safety.
Students walk college campuses thinking of homework, friends, social happenings, but rarely thinking about their safety. Students on college campuses are defenseless against an armed assailant because an armed assailant can shoot and harm many students in a short time before the police arrive. There are opposing views about allowing concealed weapons on college campuses, and the debate has been making news lately with the number of school shootings and people getting killed and injured rising. According to Robert Birnbaum in The Magazine of Higher Learning, “More Guns advocates argue that college students and faculty should be able to carry weapons for their own protection, particularly since history has shown that colleges can’t protect them from assailants” (Birnbaum 7). For students to properly defend themselves against armed assailants, they should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus.
The right to bear arms is a very important right to some Americans. This right gives Americans the right to protect themselves if they need to at any time. While some people agree that this is a right everyone deserves, it can create controversy in some circumstances. One of these places where open carry causes controversy is in the school system. With news about gun violence at various school locations throughout the country, it is only natural for people to feel uncomfortable about the situation. Especially if the open carry law goes into effect on the anniversary of a school shooting. Texas’ new campus carry law went into effect fifty years after the shooting at the University of Texas at Austin. Texas’ new campus carry law will cause more harm than good because it can make some people uncomfortable due to the fear of a domestic shooter and the fact that this law goes into effect at universities after the fiftieth anniversary of the shooting at the University of Texas at Austin.
While used properly and safely concealed weapons permits can offer numerous benefits to college campuses. Those who carry concealed weapons have a great responsibility and can ultimately help prevent or interrupt a crime or perhaps protect a life that might otherwise have been
The college campus in United State should prohibit carrying concealed guns for students’ safety. Because people rarely arm themselves for deter criminals, the responsibility should be left to official police rather than normal citizen. In addition, carrying concealed gun not only cause fear among non carrying population, but also cause higher risk of being killed or injury since criminals can legally holding concealed guns. So until the government published a more deliberate and suitable policy, the government should rethink about the consequence of permitting concealed guns, and have reaction towards the potential threat. For now, we’d better prohibit concealed guns on campus for students’ self security
