The Importance Of Democracy

In theory, democracy is a forward-thinking concept where the people are represented by the officials they elect. Since these positions are not permanent, the people can elect a new official to represent them better, which gives them the ultimate power to direct decisions in government. Monarchies and dictatorships can be oppressive, and their citizens can do nothing short of rioting or rebelling to change them. This is why more countries in the world are turning towards democracy. (Source C) The number of countries choosing democracy has grown almost consistently over the past 200 years with some minor dips. Despite the idealistic promise of democracy, unfortunately it does not always work. Democracy falters because of human complacency, economic inequality, and ingrained customs. Democratic societies often result in prosperous times for their citizens. For example, at the end of Barack Obama’s administration, American citizens were getting over the recession and did not have much to complain about. When the presidential election occurred, there was a little bit more passivity and complacency because people were doing better economically, and job rates were increasing. However, now that Donald Trump is in office, a lot of groups do not feel that they are represented by their government. Minorities, women, and the LGBTQ communities all feel betrayed by the government, and they are angry. They feel that democracy is not working for them. They were not vocal enough during the
