The Importance Of Democracy

Democracy is the “government of the people, by the people, for the people”, as once stated by former U.S President Abraham Lincoln. Democracy can be defined as a “government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections”. In a dictatorship, citizens are unable to exercise a variety of rights that citizens in democracies take for granted. Democracy requires free speech, free press, free assembly, important features of a democracy(Kotler, 2016). For example, no democracy has ever experienced a famine because news that people are starving gets publicized by the media, and the citizens would vote out a leader that puts them at risk of starvation. Our identities are important in determining what we think of ourselves and others, due to our perceptions of other people’s identities being linked to the communities that we are members of (Hall, 2002). Given this notion, it is important to make sure that the basis of one’s identity, such as moral values and religion, does not ___ the individuality of another. Every type of regime has a selectorate: in a democracy, every eligible voter is a member of the selectorate because each has a vote (Dyck, __). We are given the right to choose the government that takes us forward in our growth as individuals and a nation.
