In 1787 our United States Constitution was created and signed. Since that day it has been amended to be what we have today. In 1791 the Constitution was ratified giving us 10 amendments which our foundation. One of these amendments however, is being blatantly misused. Misused to the point that people want to quote their rights under this amendment and then when they hear something they don’t want to want to deprive others from it. That amendment and right is the 1st amendment. The right of Freedom of Speech, Press and religion. Now we know watch television that freedom of Speech has been a hot topic but what does this Amendment really state? Is it being used in the way it was originally intended? Lastly do individuals have the right to justify their speech or thoughts by citing this Amendment and depriving others from that same opportunity. Now the 1st Amendment cover several rights but for this paper we are only going to concentrate on Freedom of speech or expression. So, what does the 1st Amendment say. So, the wording is “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” (Mount) Reading this the wording could be misrepresented or misunderstood in many ways.
