Occupational therapy is a therapeutic approach that promotes the health, well-being, and spirit of every individual regardless of diagnosis or disability. The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process text (2014), defines occupational therapy as, “the therapeutic use of everyday life activities (occupations) with individuals or groups for the purpose of enhancing or enabling participation in roles, habits, and routines in home, school, workplace, community, and other settings” (pg. 1). Ever since the 20th century, occupational therapy has focused on the individual on a holistic approach, that encompasses all of the individual (2012, pg. 17). The OTR is ultimately responsible for the patient’s intervention plan and the COTA’s job is to have the patient preform the activities listed in the plan (Educational). The OTR is the supervisor of the COTA and they act as a team (Educational). The OTR and COTA have similar roles that intertwin with one another. The domain of occupational therapy is described by the Framework states (2014, pg. S42), “Profession’s purview and areas in which its members have established body of knowledge and expertise.” The domain is broken down in the client’s occupations, client factor, performance skills, performance patterns, and context and environment (pg. S4). All parts of the domain just listed can also be broken down even more. Occupation includes: activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, rest and sleep, education, work, play, leisure, and social participation (pg. S4). Activities of daily living include taking care of one’s body while instrumental activities of daily living include taking care of others (2012, pg. 82). Bathing and grooming self would be activities of daily living while bathing and grooming the client’s dog is instrumental activities of daily living. A person needs a good sleep schedule to maintain healthy to succeed in occupations (pg. 82).
