Authors pick a title of their novel to summarize the meaning of the book within a phrase. S.E Hinton never used the word outsider in the novel, but it still obtains great importance to the story. Personally, an outsider means someone who doesn’t blend into a discrete group. Whether it be the style of clothes or their personality or their social status, outsiders are outside the standard.
