Today, we see a lot of people in power. Some of those people know how to use their power. Others do not. Power in cases throughout history or in literature is good while other times that power is abused and turns out to be dangerous which leads to bad. However, today, we are seeing power in the “bad light”. With power being taken to another level for the worse or power that causes all out chaos, power shows the bad in people. Antigone is a great way to show how power is taken to another level for the worse. The king of this book, Creon, rose to the throne by the deaths of two of his nephews, who fought for the throne which led to their ultimate deaths and crowned Creon king. Creon, who had a favoritism towards Eteocles, one of the nephews, gave him an “honorable burial” while Polynices, another one of his nephews, did not even get a proper burial, therefore leaving Antigone, sister of Eteocles and Polynices, to go against Creon’s law which forbade anyone to even show the smallest amount of pity towards Polynices and try to give him any sort of burial. While she did not bury her brother, Creon did find out that Antigone happened to throw dirt on Polynices, which was a form of showing respect to him. Creon then took Antigone into captivity to punish her for breaking the law. Ismene, another character and sister to Antigone followed along with Antigone to carry out this task, was also taken into captivity, although she denied helping Antigone since she was afraid of Creon
‘’Antigone is a story about Antigone, a woman who suffers the dead of her parents and brothers. The story focuses on her seeking proper burial for one of her dead brothers who fought against his own city. Creon the king, honors one of the dead brothers for fighting for his city and declares death to any who dares give burial rites to the brother who opposed the city. “As for Polyneices, who perished so miserably, an order has gone
Antigone is a play based on a Greek tragedy, that takes place in the city of Thebes. Antigone is one of four siblings, her two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, and her sister, Ismene, and soon to be married to Haimon. Her two brothers Eteocles and Polyneices do not live to the end of this drama, but die fighting one another for the throne of the kingdom. Creon, a ruthless leader, takes the heir of the throne. He demands Polyneices not have a burial for he was a traitor, and anyone who attempts to disobey his ruling would be punished. Antigone violated the ruling and attempted to bury Polyneices. Creon showed no pity for the fact that she was his only son’s fiancee and instead gave Antigone a death punishment. Antigone states multiple times that she believes she did nothing wrong, as well as others in the city think that. Haimon uses rhetorical devices throughout the drama in attempts to keep his father from killing Antigone and to show his father how he is affecting the city.
In the play Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone is portrayed as a character searching for justice for her brother’s burial after Creon had declared him a traitor to the city of Thebes. After a blood versus blood battle with Polynices versus Eteocles, the two brothers committed the horrid crime of fratricide and one was granted the right of burial, and the other was made an outlaw. Antigone’s understanding of justice is demonstrated by the fact that she puts family and the ones that she loves above all, even at the risk of death. Throughout the play, Antigone displays no fear at the thought of death when it comes down to burying her brother, no matter what anyone says about him or his burial. Antigone’s search for justice is successful because she dies as a heroic figure who put family over law and died for the cause of family. The search for justice in Antigone's life ultimately kills her, but she is remembered for her great strength and courage that helped her to defy the law and bury her brother. Antigone demonstrates her tenacious allegiance to her fallen brother and will not let Creon or anyone else tell her not to bury him because of her unending belief in family and justice.
In the story of “Antigone” Antigone wanted to give her brother a proper burial that was a law King Creon had made. Antigone loved her brother and was not satisfied with her brother’s improper burial. Even though if anyone in the city disobeys Creon’s law will be immediately punished, she did not have concern for herself only for her family. Creon was acting out of hatred and humility and did not have any concern for his new law that most did not agree with. When comparing Antigone and Creon it is apparent that Antigone is the stronger one of the two because she is able look past herself and do what was right for her family.
In Antigone there were some difficult choices that were made. One of them was deciding to bury Polyneices when Creon said not to bury him. But the God’s laws believe that the people’s body should be buried so their souls wouldn't linger the city. King Creon refused to have Polyneices buried, and Antigone sees otherwise. So Antigone takes it upon herself and put a little dirt on his body and Creon didn't like that. Creon asks who put the dirt on the body and he finds out that Antigone done it. Then Antigone tried to get her sister to help her bury him but she didn't want to disobey Uncle King Creon's laws,so she didn't help Antigone. In the ending of the story Antigone ends up killing herself.
Power's Effect on Others Independence is not a very common trait, which is why people follow others in their actions and emotions. People's actions are mostly based on what the people around them are doing. People who have power tend to abuse it and can cause violence and cause people to have fear. The first effect that power can have on an individual and others is fear.
Power is a negative concept that turns people against each other if power is used in a wrong way.
The story of Antigone is about a princess named Antigone, who wishes for the King of Thebes to peacefully bury her brother Polyneices. However, he reveals that he has never honored the man, and demands his kingdom to not mourn his death. This angers Antigone, for she believe's that one's body must be buried in order for their soul to rest in peace so, she buries her brother instead. The foolish act causes Creon and Antigone to go through conflict solely based on their differences throughout the story. However, the pair finds more similarities in each other than differences.
Jack Feldman once wrote “Power tends to corrupt in absolute.” For the majority of society this is true, power is too much for most to responsibly manage. Power alone is not a corruptive tool, but it is often used selfishly or to provoke fear and violence.
In the hands of the just, upright, and pure, power can be a great asset but in the wrong hands power can be a horrid disaster. Often power is thought of as good but sometimes like here in Antigone it is more of a hurtful thing that leads to pain and suffering. Therefore, power has a negative effect on the majority of people because death is often tied to power in someway due to a controlling leader.
The “do as I say,” mentality has never ended well. Power has a negative effect on others because the people become afraid and weak when they are controlled and dominated.
Power, positivity, people, and perfection. Many plebeians around the world take on the role of being in power, from bosses to parents. Power is often seen as a negative thing, but many leaders around the terrene make power a positive thing. Positive people in power has a significance on others, because they make good decisions and establish trust. People with a position in power affect others in practical way by making good decisions.
Power has a negative effect on others because it can be abused in order to control people and things for the wrong reasons. For example, in the play ‘Antigone,’ the King of Thebes, Creon, has a full power of the city of Thebes. Once Antigone breaks a rule, Creon claims that he “will carry her far away. Out there in the wilderness, and lock her up.
Power is like a virus, once it gets to one’s head, they’re corrupt. In Sophocles’ Antigone, both of Antigone’s brothers killed each other at war for the throne of Thebes. Creon, the new king, only honors and buries one, Eteocles. Creon bans anyone from burying the other brother, Polyneices but Antigone decides that she will in order to honor her brother. Creon gives two speeches, one about how he’s going to rule and how he forbids anyone from burying Polyneices, and another about bribery and how money corrupts people. He says that money is the reason someone has betrayed him by burying Polyneices. In Antigone, Sophocles uses the characterization of Creon to reveal the negative effects in the development of power.
Antigone is a tragedy with the opposition of state laws and religious laws. The main protagonist is King Creon ruler of Thebes, who has recently stepped up to the throne, after his nephews Eteocles and Polyneices had killed each other in a war over the throne. Creon declares, that his nephew, Eteocles shall receive a proper burial for defending Thebes, while Polyneices's body will be left to rot for attacking Thebes. This idea is greatly opposed by Creon's niece Antigone, as it goes against what she believes is morally right, and that Polyneices was a person and deserves to get a proper burial like everyone else. Despite being the antagonist Antigone is the hero of the play. This is because she is doing what she believes is the right thing to do, she claims, "Say that I am mad, and madly let me risk the worst that I can
