I would define psychology as the science of behavior and mind. A simple definition because psychology is a huge field that does not only study humans but also animals especially mammals. Psychology is a science that tries to understand how humans and animal’s brains work, the reason they do things the way they do, understanding and treating mental disorders and the emotions they feel and share with each other. Psychology studies both the conscious and unconscious mind. I would love psychology to be seen as the science it truly is, in schools and in the outside world since in universities it falls under liberal arts when it should be with the hard sciences.
Clinical psychology is a huge subfield in psychology that “provides continuing and comprehensive mental and behavioral health care for individuals and families; consultation to agencies and communities; training, education and supervision; and research-based practice” (American Psychological Association, n.d). In clinical psychology, it is important for the patient and therapist to have a good relationship where they trust each other. A big aspect of psychology, which falls under clinical psychology is Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis. Wikipedia defines psychoanalysis as “a set of theories and therapeutic techniques related to the study of the unconscious mind, which together form a method of treatment for mental-health disorders” (n.d).
