Religion in Public Schools
A student sits in class all day listening to the droning voice of their teacher drilling them with secular ideas, memorizing the ideas as fact. As the student continues into the real world, they only know the secular ideas they have accepted as fact. Unaware of the views and beliefs of a large portion of American society, confusion can overwhelm students. Public schools often teach secular ideas as fact and ignore religious ideas. Offering both viewpoints to students to students in public schools is important. Teaching religion in public schools has a positive effect on children.
Students have the opportunity to learn about almost any topic they need to know in life at school, religion should be among the classes offered. A growing number of families have both parents working full time out of the house. A 2015 survey showed about 46 percent of homes with two parents present, have both parents working full time jobs (Wormald). Consequently, parents have less time to spend at home investing in the lives of their children. The parents are unable to properly bring up well rounded children, which has pushed the responsibility onto public schools (Wormald). Students no longer receive all the training they once received out of school to prepare them for the real world. Parents have more trouble balancing all they need to accomplish for work with the important life lessons and topics they once taught their children (Wormald).
The task of making up for
However, it would be more beneficial for schools to include religion in their curricula, for it prepares children for their futures. Since there are various religions in the United States, none of which are limited to a certain area, students are bound to come across someone who practices a different faith in their lifetimes. If public schools were to include theology, children would be more open-minded, aware, and tolerant of these religions, thus preventing discrimination, prejudice, and even violence and acts of targeted terrorism in the future because of these differing beliefs. Religious education would benefit children of all ages, religions and cultural backgrounds, as it would provide them with a better understanding of one another, and a sense of companionship and acceptance from their
Humanity wonders about anything that is around them. Men always have wanted to find the answers to different questions: Who am I? Where do I come from? What is my purpose in life? How was the universe created? Is there a bigger or perfect being?
America is a very unique country. Considering America's diversity and constitutional beginings, religion has always been a red hot topic for debate; especially when it comes to its inclusion in our public school system. The first ammendment says this: "Congres shall not pass no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise therof". It is these words that caused religion in public schools to spiral into one of the most contested issues in America today. The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has also created a divide among Americans on this issue. SCOTUS has protected the student's rights to pray, read from the Bible, wear religious headresses, express their religious view etc, but at the same
According the to the First Amendment there are two important clauses pertaining to religion. The establishment clause and the free exercise clause. The establishment clause prohibits the state from passing laws to aid a religion or show preference for one religion over another, the free exercise clause prohibits the state from interfering with the individual religious freedom. Schools are not exempted from these clauses as schools must maintain neutrality when it comes to religion. The school is in violation of the first clause; the Establishment clause. The school reciting of prayers and scriptures shows preference to a particular religion. Public school personnel on official duty and the daily running of the school acts as government official
discluding religion class which is one of the most important classes that children need to keep their minds and spirits in spiritual intact. Misguided anti-religious organizations says that children have been denied to the “right-to-learn” , the “right-to-know” and the “right-to-be” all they could become because of the fact of having religious schools in the United states.
Religion in public schooling is a major controversy proven by the fact that Americans have been debating the place of God in schools almost repeatedly since public education got its start in the country nearly two hundred years ago. As the United States becomes

I created an online survey of seven questions and posted the URL publicly. The results of the survey were anonymous, and the participants were not made aware of the thesis statement of the essay in order to reduce bias. The results of the study were somewhat surprising and a bit counter-intuitive to my mind. The majority of people surveyed (62.5%) felt that religious studies should not be included in public education. Additionally, a slightly larger majority (65%) felt that faith and religion should not play any role whatsoever in influencing public school curriculum. Even more respondents (67.5%) felt that it was extremely important for science classes to teach material based on generally accepted scientific principles. Furthermore, an overwhelming
“Schools may indeed and should teach secular values such as honesty, respect for others, courage, kindness and good citizenship. These values, however, must not be taught as religious tenets. The fact that most religions also teach these values does not change the lawfulness and desirability of teaching them. It is also appropriate for school officials to instill in students such values as "independent thought, tolerance of diverse views, self-respect, maturity, self-reliance and logical decision-making”. This quote comes from a website that has the meaningful factors of religion within the school system. So with this it is presented that many sources argue with the topic from many different
Dalai Lama quoted “The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others”. Religion, when displayed in the wrong ways, can create hate and barriers between nations; but how is that displayed wrong when everyone believes they’re right? Lack of communication, ignorance, and unwillingness to see with open eyes all contribute to how religion can be improperly presented to an audience. This is why I believe that students should learn about world religion in public schools because it builds self control and tolerance, it expands your cultural understanding, and religion played a major role in shaping our world’s history.
Increasing the secularization — having no religious basis — of the United States’ public education system is one of the key factors in the progression of educational advancements. America’s public school system has slowly been secularizing over the past century and it has statistically shown to have had a profound positive impact on our student’s academic achievements; the percent of the population who graduated from either high school or a collegiate level has more than doubled in the past 50 years (US Census). However, 70% of the population identify with the Christian faith (PewResearchCenter) and in some
In a country founded on religious freedom. The debate of having religion in our public school system has been the source of and enormous conflict. This question dates back further than the 19th century but its still foundation of many heated discussions that presently takes place in this day and age. The vast majority oppose to the thought of religion being present in our public school system. Relying on “The First Amendment” of the US Constitution. Which states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”. This amendment also established “The Separation of Church and State” which is the political and legal doctrine that establishes that religious and government institutions
A highly controversial issue that is commonly discussed is whether or not religion should be taught in public schools. In a society as diverse as our own, a course where students learn about the worlds various belief systems is essential to a well-rounded education. Some think religion shouldn't be taught in the educational environments because it will lead to disagreements or arguments ,the topic could easily offend someone or others simply don’t like the thought of religious views being "forced" upon their children. Although these reasons seem valid, Learning about religion in school is extremely beneficial for our diverse student body because it is critical to develop global competence skills, expand students minds, and reduce the ignorance
An example of how Marbury v. Madison has affected me is how religion is perceived in the school setting. There are court cases challenging religion in school that have been ongoing since the 1950s and '60s when the U.S. Supreme Court first ruled in favor of maintaining separation between church and state. In public schools like my own students, as well as teachers, are forced to stay hush about religion unless it is a lesson in the class they are needing to teach. This constitutional matter of separation of church and state has made students more comfortable in their learning environment. Yes, I am a Christian, a believer in the lord, but when religion is not talked about there is no negativity around your own beliefs, and I respect that decision.
Religions and how to tolerate them is not taught to any kids in public school today. It would be fun to learn new things, especially things that are a big part of society. Just mentioning this, but ISIS is a big problem for everyone. It is a huge religious problem. Religious beliefs should be taught in school, as well as how to tolerate them.
