The age of adulthood is simply wrong in so many ways. In the 1970s the legal age of adulthood became eighteen years of age, prior to this the legal age of adulthood was twenty-one years of age. Since then scientific research has taken place and proved that your brain’s maturity and decision making skills are not fully developed until the middle of your twenties which is showing the legal age of adulthood is too early. At age twenty children should be viewed as adults because their teenage years are through with and their brain is closer to full maturity. The legal age of adulthood is eighteen due to a surprising reason you might not be able to guess. The legal age of adulthood came from the ability to fight in the military in the 1970s, which prior to then was twenty-one which also corresponded to the age you can fight in the military. Over the years children begin to have better physical ability so they lowered the age, being blind to the brain’s development and since they were able to do certain things like an adult they just made them adults. It states in How do they decide the age when you become an adult “As for why the age was changed at all, the reasons behind this include massive improvements in public education since the 21 number was originally set, recognition that 18 year olds were able to enter into legally binding contracts, get married, have children, and could even be forcibly drafted.” (Melissa 1) This quote means the age changed because public
First of all, 21 is an appropriate age to be an adult because of the facts showing how the human brain doesn’t develop completely until one reaches their 20’s. A quote from “At What Age Is The Brain Fully Developed” states, “Although brain development is subject to significant individual
What do you think the legal drinking age should be? For years the question, “What should be the legal drinking age,” has been in the air. Many people have been arguing whether or not the legal age to drink should be raised, stay the same, or lowered. Save Us from Youth talks about how there is not a consistency of laws for an eighteen-year-old. As a young adult you are given many rights to be certified as an adult, yet are held back as youth because drinking is prohibited. Different appeals to logic and red herring are used in Save Us from Youth, to give the authors view on consistency of laws and being an adult.
Once a person reaches the age of 18, they are allowed to tattoo their bodies, smoke tobacco, gamble and even enlist if they wanted to! As an adult, they want to be treated as one but how can they feel like an adult if hanging around with their friends and drinking beer while watching TV is illegal? Of course, that does not stop them, though. The United States is one of the few countries in which still have such a high minimum drinking age. Although most people think young adults (18-year olds) are irresponsible, the minimum drinking age should be lowered to 18 because they deserve to be recognized as adults in order to avoid illegal, uncontrolled drinking and other illegal actions.
When I was young I was told 18 would be the age when I would become an adult. When I turned 18 I could get a tattoo or piercing without permission, I could buy cigarettes, and I did not need permission for most everything. Most everything except drinking alcohol. In the United States the drinking age is 21 years old, 4 years after a teenager legally turns into an adult.
There are many factors that constitute being an adult. An adult is much more than turning the age of 18. The definition in the dictionary states an adult means being completely grown: fully developed and mature. I think there is much more that defines an adult. In the United States an adult is considered to be someone who takes responsibility of themselves and their actions. An adult has stability in their life and is able to take care of themselves physically, mentally, financially and emotionally. In other countries and cultures there definition of an adult differs.
At age eighteen is when a person is considered an adult and they get privileges and responsibilities when they come of age. They have more freedom because they’re not living under their parents rule. However, they must get a job and find their own place to call home. They have the privilege to vote. In result of this, you must serve jury duty if asked to. Also, you have to sign up to be drafted for the military because it’s your duty to the country. In addition, you must pay bills. This includes water, gas, electricity, house rent, and possibly college fees. Therefore, when you become an adult you get responsibilities and privileges.
Who is considered an adult? Some people consider that 25 is the age where you are an adult. Others say that by 16 people are mature enough to be an adult. People who are eighteen years old should be recognized as adults.
At the age of 21 is when the philosopher Aristotle believes is when you finish the seven year stage of youth development this means a lot sense Aristotle did study about human nature. The age 21 makes people feel like they must be more responsible and not make any excuses for what they do and how they react to a situation. Drinking should be kept at the age it's at right now and that is the age of 21 years old there's no perfect age for it expect this. Jobs and renting a car shouldn't be based on age but it should be based around how much experience the individual has on the certain skill. So 21 is the best age when you could make better decision and have an idea of how to become more responsible.
Emerging Adulthood is a phase of a human’s lifetime between adolescence and full-fledged adulthood. The age range for this group is approximately 18-25 years old. Emerging adults are not fully ready to take on adult responsibilities, but are expected to step up from childhood. This allows for new experiences, enrolling into college, understanding one’s own sexual identity, and to seek out what future they want for themself. Most emerging adults will move out from their parents home to get their own apartment, dorm, or house and will usually have roommates to help pay for their rent. Jeffery Arnett suggests, “that emerging adulthood is a distinct period demographically, subjectively, and in terms of identity explorations” (Arnett, 2000, pg. 469). This allows the individual to get independence and self-reliability within themselves to get an idea of what it will be like to be living as an adult in the later years to come. After living on their own, many young adults will move back in with their parents after college or if they were not successful living on their own.
But those are not the case, even if someone can have a long strand of ongoing thought that doesn’t mean that they act like an adult. Also if someone is eighteen they may not act or think like an adult even though they have adult responsibilities, like taxes and mortgages. And the age of twenty-one has been described by much of my family as their best worst year, along with them saying that they still didn’t feel like an adult by that age. The age of twenty-four is a good middle ground for these ages. It may mean that someone’s brain may not be completely developed but that is definitely acceptable. Why would a slightly underdeveloped brain be so bad especially when it is still
It's all very confusing. Didn't the law state that at 18 people are "adults"? The Webster Dictionary main definition for an adult is:
Parents always say things like, “when you are an adult.” As a teen people always wonder what they mean, are not you already and adult? Herein lies the problem, why is eighteen the year the United States considers minors an adult. At eighteen kids have graduated high school and are just then ready to go to college. On the other hand, at eighteen it is legal to join the army and fight for your country. Along with all of the joy in being an adult they also have to forgo stress. The age of majority is not based on the science of the brain, but instead by politicians a long while ago, before the new science came in. The legal age you become an adult should not be based on politics, but on the science behind maturity.
There is a significant body of research that suggests early initiation to alcohol leads to long-term alcohol problems. High school students, in particular, are better protected by the 21 year-old drinking age because their 18 year old friends cannot buy and furnish alcohol to them.
What age do you or others you know typically think people become an adult, it’s close to eighteen right, well some believe otherwise. You see, some think that once you can support yourself, you're considered a responsible adult, but an adult is “a person who is fully grown or developed.” so if your 18 and not fully developed to the full extent your body will go you cannot be considered an adult. Plenty of people believe that at the age of 18 you’re an adult, legally yes, but your brain is still growing which means you’re not “grown” up you need to finish growing before your grown up. The definition of an adult, “a person who is fully grown or developed and/or matured” (noun), “{of person or animal} fully grown or developed” (adjective), people often mistakes adult hood to start at 18 but it takes longer and more than just that.
At the age of 18, people are allowed to join armed forces for the service of the nation. They are able to risk their lives for the nation and its betterment. After joining the military, they travel to many places and countries where they have to do the service. They are able to make such decisions by themselves. In addition to that, the country has made cigarettes and tobacco legal for people aged older than 18. It is found that the effects of smoking cigarettes and drinking alcoholic beverages have similar kind of problems in body. Taking both in unmannered amount causes Emphysema, lung cancer, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure and many other problems without seeing any age group. Yet, it is also found that taking one or two alcoholic beverages day can actually be beneficial to the body. So it does not matter about age legalization, rather it depends on the amount of consumption while concerning about the health of the people. However an age should be determined from when a person can drink alcoholic beverages legally and the age should be 18 instead of 21.
